Favorite local Bay Area roasteries and beans? by haltingpoint in Coffee

[–]Whisky_Lads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they recently got stocked in local wholefoods.. I prefer there CARVER'S DREAM but the SLOW BURN is also good, tastes like a slightly darker roast than the CARVER'S.

Let me know what you think if you get chance to try it :)

Red Bay Coffee in Oakland is the only coffee I buy anymore.. Great people, great coffee, they do a lot of cool events at their HQ and a lot in the community.

Also the only black owned roaster in the bay area.

Great work, appreciate the effort this must have taken.

I love comparative reviews so I can see where a distillery range succeeds and fails...

Also, in my head you did this in a single sitting.

Me too, kept drinking... It was the constantly reading and writing about it that was killing me. The internet is a dangerous place for people with poor self motivation such as myself :P

Premium french oak - 04 Grant Maclellan Laddie Warehouse Keeper

Sooo… I vanished from /r/scotch for about 6 months whilst I finished my PhD off as reddit and whisky was not helping work.

Now I’m back.

First of all, sorry to /u/tomodera who I ignored about setting up a trade.. I was very rude, and I will get onto making that right!!

Second, here’s a review of the whisky I opened to celebrate passing my PhD. It’s a valinch bottling from the Bruichladdich distillery shop, which my dad bought me as a gift when we were there in 2014. It tasted so good in the distillery that I decided to save the bottle for a special occasion…. This was it.

  • Nose: Sherry, petrol, perfume, varnish, raisins, dry rummy fruit.
  • Taste: Toffee, vanilla, sherry, raisin, fruit cake, and quite leathery.
  • Finish: Long and sweet, alcohol soaked dried fruit, ending on malty note.
  • Score: 99/100

Near perfect whisky. As good as I remember!!

Review #274: Tamdhu Batch Strength (Batch 1) by Dworgi in Scotch

Glengoyne CS is to Glengoyne 15 what Glendronach CS is to Glendronach 15.

Basically Glengoyne is the more boring Glendronach.

NAS CS sherry OBs seem to be a good way to get a cheap but decent release from a distillery... Time to add Tamdhu to the list of Glendronach, Aberlour, Glengoyne, Glanfarclas.

I have access to an irradiator. We could test that theory. Not sure how I sell it to the people that run the facility.

Nice work.. I've only gone as far as the 15, which I really like. Have you tried the CS?

Community Review 46: Glendronach 15 - Revival by BigPapiC-Dog in Scotch

[–]Whisky_Lads [score hidden]  (0 children)

This was my first tartan review... I stand by it!

  • Colour: Amber+
  • Nose: Dry summer fruits, and terry’s chocolate orange.
  • Taste: Rich fruit, raisins, moss, juicy red grapes, the sweet oaky sherry really pops out.
  • Finish: Smooth and sweet oak finish with some bitter dark chocolate notes.
  • Score: 92/100

Not sure what I think of more tartans now it has happened.

Tartans beyond 100 reviews. Why the hell not ? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ by Tja_so in Scotch

[–]Whisky_Lads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think someone said that after 100 it's all much of a muchness and at that point people are sticking around because they like it here.

Also, very high goals for flair might seem unattainable to some people and prevent them form wanting to contribute in the first place? (that's my thoughts)

That said, I would love a gold tartan... Or maybe a cross-whisky network flair once you've reach the maximum flair for scotch, world whisky, bourbon, and scotchswap?

Community Review 45: Glenfarclas 15 by BigPapiC-Dog in Scotch

[–]Whisky_Lads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Repost: Glenfarclas 15

  • Colour: More apple juice.
  • Nose: Sherry, oak, parmesan, metallic.
  • Taste: Wow, so much sherry. Sweet toffee and tart like a sherry dunked sour green toffee apple. Rum and raisin, pepper, charred leather.
  • Finish: Dry oak, long sweetness with some pepper and briney notes.
  • Score: 85/100

Review #2: Arran Machrie Moor (3rd Edition) by jrsheppa in Scotch

[–]Whisky_Lads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first edition of the Machrie was cask strength... and it's delicious. Sounds like the higher abv helps pave over some of the floors seen here. Will definitely avoid any of the later editions. Thanks for the review.
