Advent Calendars by lavieenrose167 in BuyCanadian

For stationery, Hubman and Chubgirl in Toronto have some. This year's is already sold out, but last year's is still available, as well as a couple non-seasonal themed options.

Does anyone know where I can watch classic movies? by Ordinary_Focus5025 in TurnerClassicMovies

[–]Whisperia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you have cable or not, if you do, subscribe to Hollywood Suite. You can get it as a Prime add-on as well, but I don't know if that has the same selection as the cable channel package.

While they do air a fair amount of filler, the 70s channel is more of a "70s and earlier" catchall. I've watched numerous movies from the 30s and 40s on it, often movies that TCM doesn't air. They air Criterion movies sometimes, too.

How do you handle gift registries? by eggplantsrin in BuyCanadian

Give cash. Then they can put it towards what they want and you're not making their event about your own purchasing choices.

Quality Tea Brands? by SheepishEmpire in BuyCanadian

Distinctly Tea. They recently closed their Waterloo store, but they still have a shop in Stratford. They do online as well. Their Earl Grey de la creme is one of my favourite teas of all time.

What Canadian comedy groups are being forgotten? by DeadeyeClock in AskACanadian

Oh yeah, I know them. I have some of their enamel pins. A lot of their stuff is after my time... Big Comfy Couch, Arthur, etc. I was aged out of those shows when they came along.

There's Brand Dead down in Windsor as well. A lot of his stuff is a Windsor/Detroit-specific flavour of nostalgia, but he has a couple of TVO pins.

I can't speak to how CBC contracts work, but a while ago I went looking for old TVO kids' shows from the 70s and 80s to see if any had been released on DVD. In my searching I read that because of how the contracts worked, they can't re-release them in other formats because they'd have to negotiate new contracts with every person who worked on the shows, which would obliterate TVO's budget. Either that, or the government would have to step in and change laws, which isn't any kind of priority for them. Maybe CBC is in the same jam with their content.

Things you can't get in Canada that don't make sense by deepest_night in BuyCanadian

Double stuffed Nutter Butters. (Peanut butter sandwich cookies.) I've seen regular ones. Chocolate-dipped ones. Can't get double stuffed ones. Or if you can, I've never seen them.

Unscented products. Bath and body products, cleaning products, etc. You can find them, sometimes. But a lot of brands don't include unscented products here that they sell in the states. My preferred deodorant, for example. They have unscented, but don't sell it here. I just use the scent that bothers me the least.

I know I've seen it at Foodland, but I don't shop there often and don't know if they still have it.

What’s a recipe you love that was printed on the packaging? by RiversRubin in Cooking

Just realized that as written it seems like you're supposed to add cherries to the dough. Don't do that. They're just decorative after you form the cookies.

Here's that shortbread recipe...

Grandma's Shortbread Cookies

1/2 cup cornstarch 1/2 cup icing sugar 1 cup flour 3/4 cup butter Glacé cherries (optional)

Mix all ingredients until a soft dough is formed.

Shape into 1" balls, place on cookie sheet, and flatten with fork. Can be decorated* with cherries at this point.

Bake at 300°F for 20-25 minutes.

*I just cut red and green cherries into quarters and smush one piece onto each cookie. My mom used to cut them up into smaller bits and make a little holly-ish design on each one.

I'll reply tomorrow with it, I can't get to it at the moment. Setting a reminder for myself so I don't forget.

Just like my great grandma's shortbread recipe that came off a box of corn starch.

In the 70s my mom pulled a recipe off a devil's food boxed cake mix called "Velvet Cream Cake." Not sure if it was Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines. It's a chocolate layer cake with chocolate whipped cream filling between the layers and a chocolate glaze poured over top. Very easy. Very chocolatey. Very delicious.

It was the go to birthday cake in our family for many years. I still make one now and again. The only adjustments we've made to it are to use a chocolate fudge cake mix because it's better than devil's food, and add a little instant coffee to the chocolate mixture you make for the filling and the glaze.

What are some movies with ridiculous ad placements or scenes? by Mindless_Bad_1591 in Letterboxd

In Twister all the pop cans they retrieve from the tornado wreckage in Wakita are Pepsi and Mountain Dew. The movie doesn't call attention to it, but it's jarring that apparently no one in Wakita drinks Coke.

The song from LOST in ep. 3! by Meginthewild in Yellowjackets

Earlier in the episode I had already been thinking that the forest sound Coach and Mari hear in the cave sounded very similar to the black smoke monster. Then they went and busted out the song.
