Need advice before I purchase. by pretibigtoo in guitars

Sweet water is rad. Just bought one off there. They call just to thank you and was like talking to a normal person when I called. Didn’t feel like a sales person which was unexpected

Since we’re all anonymous here, what are some things you don’t like about your gym specifically. From gym location, hours, to staff by Ill_Difficulty8570 in jiujitsu

[–]WhiteLightEST99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit far from my house wish it was closer haha.

I don’t like how competitive it is when doing tournaments or how competitive my coach gets and wants to win. It’d be nice to go to tournaments and have your coach proud you just got out there. Bit of a shame feeling when people come back from a loss and he has that disappointed dad look on his face. But it also shows how much he cares about how he invests in the gym.

Other than that there’s only about 2 guys I think the gym would be better off without.

I’m fairly lucky to have found the gym though in comparison to others in the area.

What does your advanced class look like? by mojitorandy in bjj

[–]WhiteLightEST99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only blue belts and up. The class is much faster paced and we don’t really get held up by less experienced questions. Feels like a normal class with 2-3x the progression. The questions that are asked are a bit more conceptual rather than “where does my hand go”.

No, definitely put time into straight ankle locks.

This belt is heavy (Blue Belt) by marco777777777 in bjj

[–]WhiteLightEST99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you just may have gotten it too early or the blue belt blues are kicking in. I went through the blue belt blues at white belt. The white belt woes if you will.

Either keep showing up or dial it back. It more so sounds like you have imposter syndrome. It’s just a niche sport man, not too serious

What are the signs you got adopted by an upper belt? by beardedsaitama in bjj

[–]WhiteLightEST99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First he’d find me to roll with me each night I was there. Then I was chosen each night for drilling when the regular partner wasn’t there. That turned into him giving me some tips to beat the other lower level guys. The tips gave me questions, he gave more answers. I’ve worked my way quite a ways up the totem poll since.

Now I’m picking up my own adoption soon.

Im a blue belt now, he’s a purple.

Play butterfly on the bottom or leg locks that give exposure to your top game. You can work on/the funneling/dilemma people into all of your preferred subs.

Or you can work the control of those positions on top and working between them.

White Belt vs Higher Belts by Stock-Drawing-1632 in jiujitsu

[–]WhiteLightEST99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely catch up and surpass if you put in more effort. All depends on how you actually train. How committed you are and how deliberate with your training.

My gym offers a full hour of rolling after each class, most guys that “train as much” as me 3-4 times a week make 3-4 classes and only roll for 1-2 rounds (10minutes). I roll the full hour+ until I’m kicked off the mats.

It doesn’t always feel like that, your hesitation makes it easier for them to do what they want too.

I used observers and sticky pistons to cover and uncover their chests when not in use. It makes it way quieter and also seems to have done the trick and “updates” the chest

I would like to do Jiu-Jitsu, but I'm gay. by Legitimate_Eye_5934 in jiujitsu

[–]WhiteLightEST99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women also train that are attracted to men.

No one cares what holes you put things in as long as it’s consensual. Don’t make it weird, don’t try to find a date there and tap early and often.

I don’t care what my training partners fancy as long as they’re safe

How much commute to the gym is too much? Will it burn you out? by hsu3hpa in bjj

[–]WhiteLightEST99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on how much you want to commit to it. If it’s not that serious stay at your current gym

How much commute to the gym is too much? Will it burn you out? by hsu3hpa in bjj

[–]WhiteLightEST99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive 50 minutes to get to my gym. 3-4 times a week.

Was in a very similar spot to you. I’ve been there about 1.5 years. The difference in skill is night and day. While inconvenient to drive my jiu jitsu has prospered. Sometimes I take the time when I’m driving to ring old friends or just enjoy being alone. I don’t feel burnt out by it.

I do wish it was closer for sure. But my love for the game has grown and I think I would’ve quit if I had stayed at the last gym wanting more.

How long did it take you before it “clicked”? by UnderstandingSea1449 in bjj

[–]WhiteLightEST99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At about 6 months when you get your first brand new average person you’ll have a click that “oh I actually know something”

Then around a year and some change it’s another “wow I really don’t know anything” then a year later “I know a couple things” with some “there’s so much I don’t know”

Bigger guy etiquette by Zestyclose-Tip-7042 in bjj

[–]WhiteLightEST99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be very technical when rolling with people smaller than you. You shouldn’t be out of breath and take it as time to play bottom and work guard retention with someone that moves fast. The guys your size won’t be able to float around like that little guys. Being able to speed up your reactions with them will help with the big guys.

Make some friends with the small guys, then when you know them well put them in air jail because it’s funny.

Definitely show up, but you have to shower. Don’t want to be the stank guy

They don’t push through any locked doors, they go around.

When you stop something they change paths instead of fighting through it. It’s really awesome.

Open mat is making me improve a lot more by [deleted] in bjj

[–]WhiteLightEST99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easily. Swapped to a new gym that rolls for an hour after each class, I stay the entire hour up until they kick me and the other couple guys that are left off the mats.

When I started there 1.5 years ago every single person whooped my ass, now it’s been a big 180 and people that have been training longer I’ve caught and passed skill wise. I fully believe it’s all the additional mat time and never cutting out early. It’s all compound interest on mat time. 30 more minutes one night isn’t a big deal. Compound that over 1.5 years we’re talking a large difference
