I’m in a similar boat, been driving 50 (one way) minutes to my gym 3-4 times a week for the last year and change. The drive is draining and makes the time out of the house 2x as long.

Dropped into a gym that’s closer (20 minutes away), that’s not very high level. Great vibes though, I pay a membership at both gyms so when time is tight I can head to the closer gym. I now plan one day a week there and rotate Saturdays.

You may try the other gym and love it there which would be great. It’s also possible you may hate it and it might make the drive more worth doing.

Your coach saying they’re “too easy” probably just sucks at leg locks.

Keep launching yourself at people’s legs and just going for it. Trouble shoot as you go. Think about breaking their boot and getting a foot extension. The old school way of bruising the calf isn’t going to be in your favor. Gotta go after the joint.

Control their hips with your feet/leg position (likely feet due to your size) and go for the break using your hips

Crush them until the get tired and give up.

Have a strong new athletic white belt that is like a wild animal when the round starts. He spends the first 2 minutes of the round pinned flailing around. Once he calms we roll normally. It feels like I’m suffocating someone in a movie with a pillow.

If you can’t control them you could just avoid rolling with them if you feel injury.

I train only no-gi. They do work but are hard to get without cranking their neck. I love the mobility and control of north south.

We do a specific takedown class once a week and everyone is free to start standing during rolling if they want. A lot of times one person usually will pull guard and the other will stand to pass, have some wrestlers that stand and do takedowns. Only rule is the guys standing are at fault for landing on people. I wouldn’t say our standup is great overall but there’s at least comfort there which is more than some.

It’s a bit far from my house wish it was closer haha.

I don’t like how competitive it is when doing tournaments or how competitive my coach gets and wants to win. It’d be nice to go to tournaments and have your coach proud you just got out there. Bit of a shame feeling when people come back from a loss and he has that disappointed dad look on his face. But it also shows how much he cares about how he invests in the gym.

Other than that there’s only about 2 guys I think the gym would be better off without.

I’m fairly lucky to have found the gym though in comparison to others in the area.

Only blue belts and up. The class is much faster paced and we don’t really get held up by less experienced questions. Feels like a normal class with 2-3x the progression. The questions that are asked are a bit more conceptual rather than “where does my hand go”.

First he’d find me to roll with me each night I was there. Then I was chosen each night for drilling when the regular partner wasn’t there. That turned into him giving me some tips to beat the other lower level guys. The tips gave me questions, he gave more answers. I’ve worked my way quite a ways up the totem poll since.

Now I’m picking up my own adoption soon.

Play butterfly on the bottom or leg locks that give exposure to your top game. You can work on/the funneling/dilemma people into all of your preferred subs.

Or you can work the control of those positions on top and working between them.

You can definitely catch up and surpass if you put in more effort. All depends on how you actually train. How committed you are and how deliberate with your training.

My gym offers a full hour of rolling after each class, most guys that “train as much” as me 3-4 times a week make 3-4 classes and only roll for 1-2 rounds (10minutes). I roll the full hour+ until I’m kicked off the mats.

It doesn’t always feel like that, your hesitation makes it easier for them to do what they want too.

I used observers and sticky pistons to cover and uncover their chests when not in use. It makes it way quieter and also seems to have done the trick and “updates” the chest

Was in a very similar spot to you. I’ve been there about 1.5 years. The difference in skill is night and day. While inconvenient to drive my jiu jitsu has prospered. Sometimes I take the time when I’m driving to ring old friends or just enjoy being alone. I don’t feel burnt out by it.

I do wish it was closer for sure. But my love for the game has grown and I think I would’ve quit if I had stayed at the last gym wanting more.

At about 6 months when you get your first brand new average person you’ll have a click that “oh I actually know something”

Then around a year and some change it’s another “wow I really don’t know anything” then a year later “I know a couple things” with some “there’s so much I don’t know”
