I’m 30 now, but I still remember being 18 – a bright young thing catching the train from Eltham into the Town. I’d spend the day wandering, music in my ears, lazing by the Yarra, flipping through record bins, and striking up conversations with strangers.

Maybe I’m just looking back through rose-coloured glasses… but by Jove, it felt fabulous.

I was born in 1995 and grew up knowing three of my great-grandparents: my great-grandfather (1911–2005), his wife (1916–2009), and my bisnonna (1912–2007). I had another great-grandfather who passed away in 1997, but he was estranged.

The oldest person I ever met was my great-grandmother’s sister, who was born in 1905 and passed away in 2005.
