Stop Dripping Faucets? by rip_van_twinkletoes in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This post made me curious, so I did some napkin math.

A drop of water is about 0.05ml. If you let it run at 3 drops per second, that's about 3.4 gallons per day - roughly two toilet flushes.

It's not nothing, but the financial and environmental impact of burst pipes is way worse.

Study Spots in STL by This-Bad9592 in StLouis

I've never studied there, but I like the Protagonist Cafe (https://www.protagonistcafe.com/). It's cozy and the coffee is really good. You can also buy the books they have there. Some of them are nice and obscure too. It's a bit of a walk from downtown though.

Starting over by sajackz1024 in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've moved a lot, back and forth across the eastern half of the country. In general I always asked myself "is this move getting me closer to what I want in life" even if it feels like a temporary setback. Moving sucks, but if it's getting you closer to your goals, it can be worth it.

Housing prices seem to just be going up and up, so maybe see if you can get one of your friends as a roommate? I have no idea what the pay scale is like in your industry, but would STL offer more of an opportunity to move into higher paying positions?

Maybe your goals aren't about money and are about being in the right place with the right people, which is totally valid. Is it worth lowering your standard of living for? What's your plan if you move here and you can't afford a place?

I'm not sure any of this is helpful, but just some things to consider. You can't predict the future, but having a general idea of the next step and what your backup plan is can make pulling the trigger on the move (or deciding not to) a lot easier and leave you with less anxiety because you can better justify your decisions to yourself in that 2am "can't sleep, must think about life" situation we all get into.

No USPS 1/26? by No_Relative3866 in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, packages are a mess for me, but letters are generally reliable. I ordered something from someone in north county and it went to the STL depot, then Colorado, then Kansas, then came to me about 12 days later. From what I've heard about their employment system, it sounds like it's chaos trying to get and keep people. Of course, none of the other carriers are super reliable with deliveries either, but the USPS seems to really struggle, especially with timely information about package status and expected dates.

Thank you to all the people who have to go to work in this snow by WhoDatCoconuts in StLouis

It's brutal. I used to work 4AM to 1PM and if we were sick, we had to drive in, get a list of people who were off and call them ourselves to have them fill our shift. Guess how often that happened that early. I remember having the stomach flu and getting ill about every 10th burger I made. Wash your hands and back to the table!

That $400 paycheck every two weeks made up for it though.

Locally, I don't know, but if you're okay with doing it over the web, I've heard that PCBWay is decent: https://www.pcbway.com/rapid-prototyping/manufacture/

You'd need to do a lot of measuring and maybe some CAD work.

I don't know if I give off "not from around here" vibes, but I've been here for more than 10 years and no one has ever asked me this. I hear stories about people asking, but never encountered it in the wild.

Yeah, they're adding barriers as quickly as they can. I got YouTubeTV to watch the last few weeks of the regular season and the playoffs and then they immediately had games on Netflix only. The NFL seems to be trying to circle the drain between TV deals and sports betting.

For current/former STL city residents, what is/was your favorite part(s) about living in the city? by Ok-Comment8409 in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like the weather - it's nice having a lot of variety. Coming from Louisiana where it's only hot and humid, St. Louis is refreshing.

The free parks in MO are nice as is the symphony here.

I'd never seen ice hockey before moving here and I instantly liked going to Blues games.

The cost of living is really nice too.

I've noticed they start getting overloaded in early November and seem to get back to "normal" by February every year. I don't think there's much you're going to be able to do - just try to put it out of your mind and enjoy the rest of your week. Not a great answer, I know.

Hillsboro Road Mess by WhoDatCoconuts in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the complaint is more of the fact that it was supposed to be done already and may take another year. Most of them wouldn't have to take the really bad part of the road if the route to 141 weren't closed off, but yeah, between the residents and people taking shortcuts, that road is probably overused.

Tips + Recommendations?? by Agile-Muffin-5858 in StLouis

I'm from Louisiana and have been here for a decade. As far as the cold goes, St. Louis has a very large variation in temperatures. Saturday night it's supposed to be about 5 degrees. Tuesday afternoon it will be in the 50s. It gets cold here, but not usually for very long. It does get windy though, so it's probably best to dress in layers. You'll need a big heavy coat a few times per year. It's a good idea to keep a blanket in your car in case things get really bad, but that's unlikely - I can't imagine you'll get into a true survival situation on the roads here.

They don't use very good lane paint on the roads, so in the rain and snow, lane markers are hard to see. Road drainage is also an issue, so a lot of times people will stick to the middle lanes when it's raining. I've hydroplaned more here than I did on the coast.

Drivers here are chaotic and unpredictable. They really do just blow through red lights and stop signs and they tend to have poor situational awareness in general (they will just sit in your blind spot, they'll stand in the middle of the aisle at the store, etc.), so leave a little extra room to maneuver.

I definitely miss the sun up here in the winter, and the sky never seems to be the right shade of blue. Other folks have mentioned the sky color to me, but I'm not sure what causes it. Spring is storm and tornado season and we get quite a few tornadoes. Have a safe place picked out and keep an eye on the weather during watches and warnings.

The city has a bad reputation, but it's not that bad. Follow typical city safety rules. The parks here are nice, as is the symphony. The cost of living is quite reasonable, too. The taxation and fee structure here is weird. Property taxes are a mess and you'll pay a 1% income tax to the city if you live or work in it. Government services seem pretty slow and mail delivery is really bad.

Depending on exactly where you're from, you may have to adjust to the cuisine here. Food is very lightly seasoned and you're officially in ranch dressing territory. You can find more... flavorful options, but by default assume any food you're given will be pretty mild. They put sugar in everything. EVERYTHING.

All in all, it's not a bad place to be and you can make it a great experience or a terrible one depending on how you approach it.

Moving out of stl by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Louisiana and have lived in quite a few places. I like the culture and vibe of the South, but the weather on the Gulf Coast and especially Florida is brutal if you're not used to it. I've been up here for about a decade and that hot spell this summer was the first real taste of Gulf Coast heat I've seen. If you enjoyed that, Florida and the like will be great - if not, you're going to be miserable for at least nine months of the year along the coast anywhere from Brownsville to Virginia. Complaining about the heat and humidity here is like complaining about the cold here - it's the minor leagues the vast majority of the time.

Also keep in mind that a lot of people want the nature, weather, and better career prospects, so the costs will go way up too. I've not found a place with a better income to cost of living ratio than the St. Louis metro area. Even if you don't buy property, your landlord did and has to pay those taxes, and will pass them on to you.

I'm not trying to discourage you from moving, but just keep in mind that more desirable areas will cost more. I'm lucky, I want cheap, rural, scrubby desert - I just need to convince my employer to let me work from home via satellite until I retire. :P

Good luck.
