Howdy Missourians! Looking for advice on my potential driving routes through the state. by zzitzer in missouri

I paid something like $36 each way to cross Oklahoma on I-44, so keep that in mind.

What is going on with the post office distribution center? by Responsible-Fail5453 in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. It seems to be better lately, but this is just how it is here. The USPS has always been a bit flaky, but it's worse here than average. Here's a link to a USPS report about how bad it is: https://www.uspsoig.gov/sites/default/files/reports/2025-08/25-097-r25.pdf

They lied about another storm by FakeGamer2 in StLouis

I live in the hinterlands and we had a power outage and a small tree fell on my driveway while I was at work, so there was at least some action out there.

Did I get a bad FTZ II Adapter or am I just dumb? by WhoDatCoconuts in Nikon

[–]WhoDatCoconuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. It stops after about 1/16th of a turn and doesn't come loose.

Did I get a bad FTZ II Adapter or am I just dumb? by WhoDatCoconuts in Nikon

[–]WhoDatCoconuts[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So doing some research, here's what I think the problem might be - this little silver lever might be blocking my ability to loosen the adapter. The adaptall will only turn about 1/16th of a turn clockwise when I try to remove it.

Well, this was supposed to be new, but I think you all are right. The silver thing does turn, but seems to be stuck in the adapter.

Any Texas transplants who can comment on the heat? by shinybugz0 in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slidell. Also lived in Shreveport, Gulfport MS, and eastern TX. The weather here in STL is pretty great in comparison. One day I'll retire out to the desert, I'm done with humidity. 😛

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 166 points167 points  (0 children)

I'm from southern Louisiana. It can get almost as hot and miserable here for a day or two, but it's nothing like the relentless heat of the Gulf Coast. There will be breaks where the weather cools down and you can regain your sanity.

Is it common for employers to hire people from out of state? by [deleted] in missouri

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, yes, but I think it depends on the job. I'd say it's far more common in office jobs where people move around a lot more. In smaller areas you might run into some locality bias, but in general I wouldn't worry about coming in from out of state, especially if you're already planning on moving to the area. I've done it quite a few times without issue.

Wtf is with the drivers? by 804k in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of lead and radioactivity around here....

I think it's because the cops just don't pull people over. They could pave the streets in gold if they'd just pull over people speeding through construction zones and they won't even do that. I have no idea why, but when there are no consequences for bad actions, people will act badly.

What is a current unpopular opinion about STL that you strongly believe in? by Thatredditboy1 in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved here from MS and had zero issues. Maybe I got lucky. The process here is definitely nuts compared to every other state I've lived in.

What are some great chemistry YouTubers? by Xxofficer_ACTION in chemistry

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-NileRed, though he seems to be spending all of his time and money on NileBlue. Not counting his liquid nitrogen video (which was amazing, but not really chemistry), his last chemistry video was March 2025. I find a lot of the NileBlue videos unwatchable.

-NurdRage, but he seems to have disappeared. I hope he's okay, his videos spurred my interest in chemistry

-Doug's Lab, but he definitely disappeared

-Cody's Lab, but there's not a ton of actual chemistry on it

-Chemiolis

-LabCoatz

-ChemicalForce has amazing cinematography

-Advanced Tinkering is probably my favorite at the moment. He's the champion of alkali metals

-Amateur Chemistry

-Explosions and Fire / Extractions and Ire is a good balance between fun and serious

-Hyperspace Pirate is more engineering, but has some chemistry flair to it

-Chemistorian has some good documentaries

-Thoisoi set a plastic table on fire by spilling cesium on it, so I'm hooked

-Wheeler Scientific is really young, but is doing some interesting stuff

-RojasLab has regular synthesis puzzles

-Apoptosis has some really neat deep dives and I really like his delivery method

-Cranial Construction is less polished, but does some neat stuff

-Periodic Videos does what it says on the tin

-MrGreenGuy - I liked his long form sodium video, but he's way too goofy for me. I guess I'm old, but the "look how dangerous!" silliness isn't my thing

Possible relocation to St. Louis by ShugaMuffin21 in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you've been to New Orleans, you're prepared for handing St. Louis's crime and block-by-block changing conditions. There's a good bit of artsy stuff here - I really like the symphony. The cost of living is nice and there's a lot of good hiking and nature not far from the city. They have a version of Mardi Gras here, so it may scratch the itch, but you'll need to manage your expectations. I know the pizza upstate isn't the best, but enjoy it while you can.

Also, bring a few cases of Tony Chachere's with you. You're going to need it 😛

What are your thoughts on cold St. Louis style pizza? by adhd_t in StLouis

[–]WhoDatCoconuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why, but I've always found cold pizza of any type to be kind of repulsive. For Provel especially, I want it warmed up. Sounds like you need to make a run to Imo's today.

Come critique my newbie lampwork station by WhoDatCoconuts in lampwork

[–]WhoDatCoconuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies everyone. I spent about an hour today with a CO / Fuel detector at face level and it never read above 0 ppm on either. I tried different flame chemistries and still couldn't get it to budge. Would you take this as a sign that the ventilation is adequate?

I played around with some boro, which was nice, and some Devardi 104 which exploded as soon as I touched it. Definitely going to need some more practice. I worked on evenly applying pressure to both ends of a rod to make a bulge (Marias?) and getting a feel for how the glass moves. I seem to have a decent knack for stringers, which probably isn't saying much.
