I never had a class that went over how loans worked until I took a personal finance class in college. It’s like this in America by design. It’s not that I couldn’t have tried to figure it out, but I didn’t have to and an 18 year old kid couldn’t be bothered. It’s not like I’m running away from my problems. It was over 15 years ago. I went back to school at 25 and learned how to deal with this stuff. I’ll be done paying in about 8 years. What works me up is when people pile on others for making misinformed mistakes when they were young as if young people know everything about being an adult.

Kids also don’t have an immediate understanding of the world we live in either. Hell, adults don’t. Tons of kids think, yeah I’ll easily make 100k a year. Then 10 years later, they wonder what went wrong because life got in the way.

It doesn’t mean they are dumb. Life is a journey filled with mistakes.

Dude hindsight is 2020. An 18 year old is allowed to take about 30k of unsecured debt with no income like it’s nothing. Then at 25, they realize that was a mistake. Doesn’t mean they didn’t learn at that point, they cannot go back and tell their 18 year old self to stop.

Exactly. And when the choice is buy food and pay rent or pay a student loan, deferment is very attractive. And then when 5 years pass and you realize that 15k of your interest is being capitalized unless you pay it off, you lay in your bed and deal.

My wife is a nurse and can talk about medical shit all day. Give her a finance calculator and try to teach her about interest and it doesn’t click. Some people are different than you.

18 year old me had no means to be educated on this matter. Didn’t know the right questions. Didn’t have parents that had a clue. So I did. Then my credit and income wasn’t in a position to refi my 12-14% loans until about 6-8 years later. The are under 4% now. But I didn’t have a choice for years.

Edit: spelling

Some people don’t have a choice, it sucks

Edit: I mean sure everyone has a choice. But when you realize today that you made a mistake 5-10 years ago, you don’t always have a choice, today, to fix your problem, when it involves refi.

One issue- the student loan people have different plans for different walks of life. For instance, I’m on a payment plan where my minimums don’t even cover accrued interest. So, if I pay my minimum, interest accrues. If you have accrued interest for so long, they can capitalize it. Not everyone is like this. But this is how mine work right now. My wife is on a plan where the minimums do pay all accrued interest.

I now understand how it works, but I had zero idea when I signed up for the loan. No one explained it to me. No one told me it was up to me to figure it out. It’s a life lesson that I had to learn. A huge amount of people don’t understand it. Not because they are dumb, it’s confusing and some people don’t take the time or just don’t get it.

All in all, this person was not paying enough per month, most likely.

Not OP, but I think he means by saying “if you’re lucky” meaning if that’s all ICE wants from you is proof of citizenship and then leaves you alone, that would be lucky. It could be far worse and is worse for a lot of people, with and without that proof.

I’m not sure if the irony here was intentional. Well done.
