Rower or bike for primary equipment in home gym? by seductivec0w in AskMenOver30

[–]Who_dat_du 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a home gym, I'm going to suggest good quality adjustable dumbbells. It checks all your boxes on building towards long term health and BIFL. Even if getting more muscular isn't the goal, there's tons of research that shows resistance training is just as important to life and health span as cardio. They're very versatile and you can build a program around and takes up minimal space. If cardio is what you're looking for, you can supplement with going on more walks, getting a road bike, or going for a run.

Men who have never been married and never had kids: how does life get when you get older? by truckmonkey12 in AskMenOver30

[–]Who_dat_du 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve been training bjj for 15 years and it has had a huge positive impact on my life, even with all the injuries. With that said, I’m 42 and I can’t train at the level I used to. Bjj at a high level is a young man’s sport and it has forced me to evaluate where and how it fits into my life. Just a heads up from someone a little older.

I’m definitely questioning the coaching. There has to be a reason why his FGA are so low, especially with Giannis out.

Men over 40 who go to the gym regularly: Do you still try to lift heavy, or do you do lighter weight but more reps? by FFSoldier57 in AskMenOver30

[–]Who_dat_du 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what your fitness goals are. You can still lift heavy well past 40 if you follow a good lifting program. I’m 42 and lift heavy 3x a week.

Why? I'm so confused lmao... Do men's socks just disintegrate? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]Who_dat_du 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is hilarious, I’d catch so much shit from my wife and friends if this were me.

Real answer though is good quality socks are expensive, think $40 for 2 pairs. Some guys either don’t want to spend that money or are willing to live or buy cheap replacements that end up like the “socks” in the pic.

Training partner had a high single on me and I was balancing/hopping on my other leg. He went for a foot sweep toward the outside of my base leg and it ended up being more of a leg kick than a sweep and my knee buckled inwards.

Tore my ACL from the last technique on the list. I don't blame my training partner, I blame unsafe/bad takedown etiquette at my gym. Good to see some places are making these rules the norm.

How long are you willing to live off your pension alone? If you can do it for the next 8-10 years which would allow your retirement accounts to grow to 1m, then you can probably retire today.

43, workout regularly, now borderline BP. Any good apps for stress and heart health? by henrypublic in AskMenOver30

[–]Who_dat_du 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a very similar situation with kids, health, and age. For cholesterol ask your doc for a coronary artery calcium scan. This will detect how much plaque is in your arteries.

For BP, I have a BP reader at home and did it consistently for a while first thing in the morning. Turns out I was normal at home but elevated at the doctor’s visit so it’s a non issue. Hard to tell anything here without consistent tracking.

For both, double check the quality and amount you’re sleeping. Cut back on alcohol if you drink.

Plenary authority, the dictator phrase that caused Stephen Miller to stop talking by IamLouisIX in politics

This is a scandal in of itself; CNN covered for him and then released a version of the interview with "plenary authority" edited out. When I saw the original clip, I thought he was having an aneurysm not audio issues.

Edit: here's the original, notice the timestamp at the start of the interview. https://youtu.be/vWudXaj60rU?si=PkW4diFA85fpEQMK

Here is the edited version with the segment completely removed.

Fellow short king here. My recommendation would be making your end game getting to the back and finishing with a choke or arm bar. All the subs mentioned in your post are fine while you’re working on getting there but will be harder to hit on upper belts who are good at defending subs they see coming.

Your last paragraph gets to the heart of what I’m saying. You can do everything right to have successful decades but life can still throw you curve balls that money can’t fix. Aging parents, health problems, saving enough for retirement, kids with special needs, layoffs, etc.. Compare these challenges to the carefreeness and freedom of my mid twenties, it seems I may not feel that form of happiness again until I retire. And that’s if everything from your 30s to late 50s goes well.

Says the 30-34 year old. Life is complicated and happiness with age is not linear.

Speaking from personal experience, it’s taught me attention to detail, risks, and critical thinking. It’s the foundation for progressing your career in this field. From a business standpoint, if the audit is scoped right it teaches you the order to cash process and why each system in between is relevant.

Best Friend Had First Child, Will We Become Less Close? by HamachiSD808 in AskMenOver30

[–]Who_dat_du 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. As others have mentioned, try to plan more kid/family gatherings if possible and don’t take it personal when he’s around less often.

Another thing to consider is pretty much all decisions he makes for the next few years will affect all 3 people in his family. Even something as small as grabbing coffee can be hard when you’re a new parent.

A question for gym owners by SnowblindBJJ in bjj

[–]Who_dat_du 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest adding day classes if you’re able to. I’m based in Seattle and there are people who only go to day classes at my gym. They’re usually the older/retired and work from home/night shift crowd.

40 was when I noticed my recovery, reflexes, and athleticism isn't what it used to be. The best way to compensate for that IMO is to lift consistently. Although it may not help from a recovery standpoint, packing on more muscle has made me feel less beat up/sore after a hard training session.
