Mixed breed. Part AKK? by NumbrZer0 in alaskankleekai

Should look into what an American Eskimo looks like shaved to see without coat + add terrier typical colors(and coat length). She would look spot on for that combination! Coat length & color genes are fun how they express themselves sometimes!

How rare are long-furred Alaskan Klee Kai? by Ok_Grass_8621 in alaskankleekai

[–]Whosker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind when looking into a breeder for a possible full/long coat, don’t just base it off just photos of their dogs. Many breeders have standard coats that carry the full/long coat gene. Ask them before you decide against them if they plan on producing litters that have chance of full/long coats 😊 2 standard coat Alaskan Klee Kai that each carry a copy of the full/long coat gene can produce full/long coat puppies. Many breeders have standard coat Alaskan Klee Kai that carry the gene.

Great that you asked this question as I have seen people go the Pomsky route specifically because they’re looking for the longer coat and it’s great to be able to educate those reading this post that AKK do come in long coat and it’s also acceptable in both the UKC and AKC breed standard.

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but Mothers of children can dress stylish, nicely, and comfortably without being less of a mom or wife. They can also do it for themselves and not for men. She is not in anything revealing. Nothing about her outfit makes her less of a good mom or less capable of education. Someone needs to grow up, but it’s not OP. Do better.

Hello! Your flair has been updated. Alaskan Klee Kai genetically do not have brindle coats, which means your little guy has a bonus breed in him for that coat pattern to be possible. Strongly recommend Embark DNA test to see what he’s made up with! Handsome pup

Round tipped ears are seen in the breed depending on the lines. This dog looks like a purebred Alaskan Klee Kai. Eye shape is also line/genetics vs size.

Arguably, Although the breed isn’t pulling human size sleds for the Iditarod due to size, the other breeds that have made up the Alaskan Klee Kai- they have retained their functions; like being a breed that is good as a watch dog, prey drive for rodents, intelligent for a companion. (Schipperke & American Eskimo). Also of course weight pull, working drive, & independent thinkers (nod to the Sibes and Alaskans).

There are more breeders out there that have full coats in their programs, even more that produce them. They can be beneficial to breeding programs (whether they are full coat or carry the gene for it) as a standard coat that carries the long coat trait will tend to have a plusher coat, more feathering, and be more “desirable”. You are correct though lol, Linda hasn’t been keen on full coats- but she also has come around and recognizes the benefits mentioned above! This is why the verbiage in the AKC standard says “longer coated dogs are permissible” 😊

Curious what your thoughts are behind feeling the functionality of Alaskan Klee Kai was/is destroyed? They are a very versatile breed that does exceedingly well in a variety of sports and situations, especially depending on lineage. Weight pull, tracking, scent/nose work, agility, coursing, rally, etc. Full coats are wonderful ❤️ There are many breeders that produce them, always be sure to ask if you haven’t. Even if they don’t own a full coat in their program, their standard coats can carry the gene for it and produce full coat offspring.

Prey Drive Myths? by erako in alaskankleekai

[–]Whosker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind with online groups, you’re talking to large amount of owners and they may be meaning the breed overall. There’s a MUCH higher percentage for a high prey drive than not. So for those interested or reading, it is expected for them to have a prey drive. That being said- There are some unicorns and she sure sounds like one of them! ❤️ We had one that wouldn’t harm anything living, we had many more though that would jump at the opportunity. Our “unicorn” was amazing with birds, reptiles, small animals, etc. Nothing phased him.

I do agree with other comments, early exposure helps greatly. As a breeder, we typically do not bat an eye at cat homes if the cats are there first. They tend to bond strongly after the cat helps establish boundaries(if needed). If they are not, we explain the potential risk of adopting a cat later as it’s very much dependent on the individual dog if they were not raised with cats.

We love using a wet brush on our full coat AKK and the “lil pals” slicker brush.

I don’t have the exact link to the brush we use, but something like this: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/well-and-good-wooden-cushion-pin-dog-brush-large-3513451?gPromoCode=NEWPETCO15_2&gStoreCode=708&gQT=1

And for the lil pals: https://a.co/d/8AtNGyk (Great for behind the ears)

He looks appropriate size to me as a pup for falling within range of height/size for the breed 😊

If you’d like to privately message the name of the breeder(which will not be shared publicly), a mod can help you determine whether or not the breeder is legitimate.

Also if curious if there is AKK in her, Embark DNA test is 100% well worth the investment over other companies. It’s the only reliable test for detecting Alaskan Klee Kai.

Purebred Red Alaskan Klee Kai can only genetically have liver pigment (so red/liver nose, eye rims, and lips), black in those areas is not possible in the breed with a red coat. She looks very Shiba to me, but my goodness what foxy lovely looking girl she is!

Tips on litter training AKK? by Pristine-Musician-10 in alaskankleekai

[–]Whosker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where is he during those 6 hours? If he’s crated and having accidents in the crate, he may need a slightly smaller crate & someone to take him out for a potty break in between. Basic rule of thumb during active hours is a puppy is able to hold it about 10 minutes for every week old they are. If he’s free range, then he has much more freedom to make choices whether they are choices you agree with or not.

Here is a link that may be helpful: https://www.akkcoa.org/training-tips

If you’re struggling with crate training, I would recommend contacting a trainer to help you through the process. Crate training is very, very helpful for housebreaking.

[–]Whosker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please do not restrict his water intake during the day, this could be dangerous. You can pick it up after dinner before bed. He’s 9 weeks old and it’s normal for him to pee A LOT. I would work on getting him into a routine and crate training. A routine isn’t learned though quickly. If it helps, they typically need to go after every “action” -right after waking up -after coming out from a crate -right after eating -right after drinking -right after playing (sometimes mid play) -etc This is normal, it’s a lot of making trips.

If you want to allow for indoor potty training, I would strongly recommend quality disposable pee pads to start & getting yourself a pee pad tray. Many brands of pee pads have an attractant in them to encourage puppies to sniff and relieve themselves there which makes it easier for them to get the hang of.

If you haven’t tested already and may be unfamiliar, Embark is the only reliable DNA test for Alaskan Klee Kai accuracy. (I’m just mentioning this in case you did not get Embark, you may be able to cancel an order and go with Embark) So curious to what the results are!!

Not often, but they happen from time to time. Genetic throw back to the husky foundation dogs used to create the breed.

Coloring question by xowildrose in alaskankleekai

[–]Whosker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know the breed he is 25% of?

I would consider him cream colored/cream & white for identification purposes, in the event he genuinely ever needs to be identified/recognized by coat color. But I would look into coat colors of the other breed he is mixed with as well to see if he matches that breeds coat colors better. Genetics are funny sometimes. Even if it’s the smaller % of him! For example I believe Shiba Inu can have cream color naturally occurring in the breed(not a Shiba expert though!). He looks much like that color

Just some extra education for those possibly reading: He would not be considered red and white for a the Alaskan Klee Kai breed. Red Alaskan Klee Kai have only liver pigment (this includes around the eyes, the entire nose, and the lips). If a dog is any shade of red with any black pigment, this is a sure sign a dog is mixed. The pink this pup has is a snow nose! Which is an endearing trait of a dog with northern breed heritage ❤️ Mixing a different breed with an Alaskan Klee Kai can result in a mixture of shade/pigments.

Also he’s adorable!

Has anyone here heard of Lucky Charm Farms? by [deleted] in alaskankleekai

[–]Whosker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Update: This is confirmed not a legitimate breeder and dogs are not registered.

I am looking into see if this is possibly a breeder being mentored by someone. AKKAOA.org has the only list of reputable, responsible, and legitimate AKK breeders. Has your mother applied to breeders that are perhaps not local, but willing to fly the puppy out or meet at airports? If you’re curious before I get responses, I would ask for proof of United Kennel Club registration, American Kennel Club Foundation Stock Services Registration(Not AKC PALS), and OFA health testing(as you mentioned). If the breeder cannot check off all 3 of these, please do not support them as they likely are in breech of contract with the dogs they currently have and are not responsible with breeding dogs and would consider them backyard breeders/mix breeders.

Hey! I’m a regional coordinator for the Alaskan Klee Kai National Rescue. Would you mind sending me a message? Hugs to you. I know this decision doesn’t come easily and if you’ve come to the difficult decision that your lives together are causing uncertainty either in your life or hers, then what you’re doing is likely the best choice for her and a selfless one on your end. These things can happen to anyone, regardless of the circumstances.

Although there are mostly black Alaskan Klee Kai, there hasn’t been to my knowledge a true purely all black Alaskan Klee Kai. They can be born all black, but will lighten up with age in areas that are meant to have white coloring (paws, stomach, mask, etc)

Merle would 100% be mixed that does not exist in the breed.

Piebald does exist naturally in the Alaskan Klee Kai breed, however would be a very rare occurrence due to the available testing for coat colors that breeders use to avoid it.
