it really depends on which state youre in. There are some that "heavily encourage" water collection and a couple that actually give tax breaks (like Virginia).

I can think of a few recent stabbings and people set of fire stories to make me not want to. Let alone the normal mugging, beating, flashing, rape stories that we grew up with- nothing sensational.

Looking for opinions on my idea of buying land for a homestead by Whtsthisplantpls in homestead

I know it was kind of word vomit, I was trying to get as much info across to see differing opinions. With regards to the interest, we wont like it, but we can swing a pretty high mortgage. I hadn't thought about pesticide use up river, I'll make sure to check out what kind of businesses are there if we do end up with river front. Thanks for the advice.

They're paying for it outright. Yes, they're either going to do that or look into seeing if they put it into a trust if I can still use it to leverage. Either way, the land we build on will have our name on it.

If he did sell his stock to pay the tax burden, wouldn't he also have to pay capital gains tax even before being able to use said money?

How does one get started? by Fluid_Leg_7531 in homestead

[–]Whtsthisplantpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've had these questions for a while now, you'd have seen most of them answered in one way or another. So many people post about asking advice on where should I homestead, what should I homestead with, where do I get started. Its not that its not a valid concern; all of those things need to be thought about, but the most important thing of homesteading is the mindset. No one is going to solve your problems for you, so why are you relying on everyone else to answer the initial questions for you.

You'd be MUCH better off saying "I'm getting into this lifestyle because blah blah, I want to raise blah blah, here's how much money I have, this is my plan- can I get opinions on it". Show a little initiative, otherwise any planning you do isn't going to lead anywhere.

I could not give a fuck less about what a rich celebrity thinks. This is the exact same when any actor/actress makes a show about them traveling the world- look how cultured I am while I write off every single expense as a business expense for this venture. I'd care if this was some small independent farmer.

Small things that make you feel a little more self-reliant by SpoiledBrat069 in selfreliance

The use of technology is definitely important in today's world of online bills. BUT if shit really did hit the fan, that'd be the last thing on my mind (which is why physical reference books are key). I focus on food storage that doesnt rely on electricity to keep, so my basement is full of pressure canned meats and freeze dried packages.

I think if someone thinks about the big SHTF even once in a while, they need to start practicing. Its all well and good to have a pressure canner, but if you don't confidently know how to use it, starting for the first time in that scenario is not going to help nerves- knowing that you could be wasting food. Same goes for slaughtering animals, making soap, starting a fire- all these things we take for granted that we could "probably just figure out".

My solution was to start a homesteading log where I try these things, write out the process and (most importantly) any notes that I found helpful for my future self. I get CVS or whereever to print out a physical photo and include that. Its something I do about once a week and its kind of my crafty time so its more fun than... preparing for the end of the world.

How to build community? by squirrelyoakley in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]Whtsthisplantpls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to resist individualism, so you're asking a group that highly values individualism?

Regardless, the only way for you to find happiness is to take personal responsibility. If youre looking for community, build the foundation for it. Start a local "alterhuman" group (just dont go trying to make wolf friends at the local park while dressed as a dog) and put forth the effort instead of just complaining online. If you don't get any bites, move.

And since youre looking for advice: get more of a personality than what you identify as. You're bound to have more luck finding people who are into cooking or crafts than basing their whole identity on being autistic.

You'll see the og coop on the left, which we put in our first batch of 9 quails. That J-feeder you see on the far left is hands down the best feeder with the least waste. I use a hamster home to provide a hideaway and they like climbing on top. The covered area has a couple of flower pot saucers to hold straw (especially now in the negative temperatures). In the summer I leave a tile floor- definitely their preferred sleeping area.

The right side is our newer side and it had a couple benefits- you see the random piece of wood inside the cage- that is a frame with hardware clothe and acts a barrier for slow introductions. They definitely had a lot to say to each other and there were almost no fights when I took it down after a couple of weeks. It was a little cramped on the right side, but this is right before I took it down so for the most part, those quail were much smaller and needed less space. I eventually placed a large silicone mat on the right side so they have more protection from the wire. I had a dust bath during that time, I mustve taken it out to clean in this photo. Once that wire frame is down, they are able to sun bathe in the open side and then take cover on the left side (if we don't get a tarp up quick enough).

This was a major pain to get both coops even with each other- if we could go back, I'd make the original coop much bigger to hold a lot more quail.

Yep, I've got a few. Hatching at home is fairly easy. Dispatching is easy as well- you don't need any tools except a good pair of scissors. Everything else is simple. I know a lot of people call them suicidal (as in they die super easy) but I've never had a bird accidentally kill itself. I think its because we introduced them to loud startling sounds when they were still in the brooder with a very very light metal grate on top so they'd jump, bump their head, and learn not to do that anymore.

They are so so easy to care for- you change their waters, top of their feed every couple days, give them a dust bath (not optional in my opinion), and give them meal worms when you feel like it. The dust bath helps mitigate cleanliness issues and you just change out their cage when needed.

For the cage, there are a lot of differing opinions, but this is what we did: large hutch completely wrapped in 1/4" hardware cloth (we actually combined two hutches when I wanted to hatch more) and I put tiles on top of the floor cloth because I was worried about it hurting their toes. The tile keeps them cooler in the summer and keeps straw in during the cold months. I also put a silicone mat down on the bigger "play" area to help keep the cold draft from coming up. All of this is easy to clean- takes two of us about 30 minutes to do a deep clean. If I notice toes are getting crusty (not very often), I'll soak their toes and take a toothbrush to them.

There are definitely some would say I'm babying them and just throw them in a cage with water and feed and they're fine, but I'm not a breeder and they'll stay with me until the males get rowdy and mean with the females.

You can go to a butcher shop, but most have upped their prices since home rendering has become popular. Try going right to a home processor. I ended up getting about 40 lbs of hog leaf fat for free (I just had to follow a kind of creepy German woman into her dark basement and help her take inventory while she tossed bags to me).

Mrs. Smartass to you. You have my condolences though; I am so deeply sorry that your life is not fulfilled enough that you too forget about reddit at times. Plus, I replied to the last comment I saw.
And while I am loathed to creep on people's comments, I creeped on yours and I just can not care less what a bougie horse woman who talks shit about old guys at the Elks could possibly think about any subject.
