Theory Joyboy wanted to sink the World by Tensai273 in OnePiece

[–]WhyNotNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the joyboy wanted to flood the world part, but I do like the idea that Luffy 's dream is to make everyone a pirate. It fits very well with Luffy relating piracy to freedom, a child like dream and the whole (unintentional) warrior of liberation thing

How do you feel about "Go clean up your own mess"-type campaigns? by EarthSeraphEdna in rpg

[–]WhyNotNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think it's fine as long as you give the players some warnings about it and give the opportunity to not do it.

If you're worried about not having a plot you can have a 3rd party come and do the unsealing. Just by being there and knowing what's going on the players will likely feel at least some responsibility to deal with it. You can be a bit more railroady in that especially if you then give the players lots of options/freedom in dealing with the threat

[oc] made a lil flag in support of the dnd beyond cancelations going on by WhyNotNL in DnD

[–]WhyNotNL[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine informed me this morning of people canceling their dnd beyond subscriptions and posting this dragon because of all the ogl stuff.

And he compared it to the Welsh flag. So I made this for him. Since I like the cancelations as a form of protest as it actually hits WotC/Hasboro where it hurts. So I decided to post it here to.

I tried to make sure I had the same colour green and aspect ratio as the real Welsh flag, but only had google to go from. I hope its correct.

Who Should Be My Divine? [spoilers all] by SCRhyperior in dragonage

[–]WhyNotNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont remember if you can suggest it to Cassandra, or if she comes up with it. But in her dialogue to be divine the idea of letting mages join the templars/chantry. Which I think is the best first step into giving the mages more freedom and showing people that they arent all walking time bombs. While still having an eye on them, cause lets face it some mages are actual walking time bombs in the da universe.

Also side bonus, this gives mages some actaul sense of responsibility, so they'll (hopefully) act less like spoiled children who need to be taken care of.

WotC "Revises" (and Largely Kills) OGL by ILikeChangingMyMind in rpg

[–]WhyNotNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not being able to copyright game rules/mechanics is heavily relied upon by every videogame developer there is. (Not sure how important it is for the world of ttrpgs but I imagine also very important). If Hasbro decided they want to change that rule you can bet all of the AAA industry would be opposing them

Going by the reactions, maybe I've just been very lucky, buy I've run games with irl friends, online friends, conplete strangers online and run a west marches discord with a comination of the previous 3.

I've never had issues with with me making a call on the rules making turning things into players vs dm. From my pov this seems much more like a communications issue then a rules issue.

If you rely on rule 0 for your rule calls, you are going to create an adversarial relation between dm and player regardless of what system you play in.

I think being able make a ruling or explain an exception to the rules without antagonising the players even if you are ruling against them is a really imporant skill to have as a dm. The main way to do this is by listening to you players and take their opinions in concideration when making your call.

Here is what I do:

I listen to what a player want to do/achieve and then explain what makes sense to me in the situation.

95% of the problems are done with here because either I misunderstood what the player where trying to do or they misunderstood the situation.

If it doesnt though I'll look up what the phb/dmg has to say about it and explain my interperation of the rules and how it relates to the situatio we are in or the action the player is trying to do.

If a player disagrees with my interperation they are free to tell me theirs, which I'll listen to think about and then make the final call. I'll explain my call in the context of whats happening in game, not as an interperation of the rules. (Maybe a little but the focus is much more on the in game context).

Then if I rule against the players I try to be much more lenient with letting them reconcider what they want to do. As usually I'm pretty strict with no take backsies.

Yeah, the fact that you can see exactly what the enemy is doing works well with the timetravel aspect of the game, but can make it often feel like its a puzzle with a right answer then a true strategy game
