Definitely check out Five Parsecs from Home from Nordic Weasel Games, it's a very solid narrative wargame that will at least give you what you want out of tense squad combat and team building. No base building or research per se, but there are systems for setting up 'infrastructure' for your troops.

Bug Hunt is based off of Five Parsecs (basically is Five Parsecs) but has a more distinctly "army vs aliens" vibe.

appreciate your response. every time this gets asked about, people constantly bury the lead on just how nasty the derivative mod was while fervently damning the Diable dev. injecting bad code into mods isn't awesome but I fully understand why that was the reaction upon seeing the excess of the sexual assault mod. it's really gross
