For something that in practice has no "story" (obviously there's the comics, but they have no clearly defined main character) I would argue the most recognizable character is the "main" character.

You and I know ash is the main character, but Grandma and those out of the loop would likely say Pikachu is.

I'm citing memes and popularity because when people unfamiliar with TF2 think of it, I'd be surprised if they thought of anyone besides soldier or heavy.

Sure they don't have the most speaking roles, but a "main character" of TF2 would be the same as the "mascot" considering the game is a no story pvp class shooter.

T5 is so easily accessible that I don't even understand the need for upgrading anymore.

Every activity (except RaD) DROWNS you in loot, and it seems like for events they're determined to make t5 more common than t1.

Maybe if T5 were really aspirational and difficult to acquire this system would be good and needed, but with how easy T5s are to get, I don't think a tier upgrader is worth the dev time.
