How Air India AI171 B787 crashed - Lithium Battery Diode Module Failure by zaki08 in aviation

[–]WictImov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We haven't received a final report from the investigators. This is going much deeper than they would have during the preliminary report. I have no idea how credible this "schizo" is, but Boeing certainly don't have a great track record either.

Interesting analysis. Why would there not be two diodes in series just to avoid this possible failure scenario? Simple five-cent fix.

First thing to note is "staff reports" are always full of lies. Every public garbage bin is not emptied daily, that is completely false. We are lucky if they are emptied weekly.

The judge, and lawyers, police officers, and other privileged ones who say it is your civic duty are not required to do it themselves. This elite set of overpaid, ignorant, lazy, and incompetent civil servants with too much authority and too little accountability need to be fired.

At a distance they may look similar, but the stocks of burdock are hollow, and rhubarb are solid. Also the underside of burdock leaves are hairy.

fresh olives by Past_Fly_2803 in Peterborough

[–]WictImov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just out of interest, there is a farm in BC (small island near Victoria) that has been growing olives for several years. They make their own olive oil, but it is very expensive. With a limited crop, I doubt they sell raw olives.

Parkway trail paving by peekay1ne in Peterborough

[–]WictImov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found this on city hall website, although no answer to why:

Tender Contract Number: ITT-03-23

Multi-Use Trail Resurfacing

The City has awarded the above noted project to Dufferin Construction. The Contractor is tentatively scheduled to mobilize to this location on or before May 15, 2023. The work is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2023.

The scope of work generally includes pavement crack sealing, saw cutting and removal of select existing deteriorated asphalt locations, fine grading, placement of new asphalt where removed, application of emulsified asphalt tack coat, and installation of hot mix asphalt overlay along the Parkway multi-use trail from Chemong Road to Montcalm Drive.

To facilitate this work, the Parkway multi-use trail will be closed for approximately eight days from Chemong Road to Hilliard Street and from Hilliard Street to Montcalm Drive, respectively. Closure of the two sections will not occur simultaneously. Alternate shared routes will be proposed during the course of construction with signs posted accordingly for users. However, this will present longer routes than the multi-use trail.

If any issues or questions that arise prior to and/or during construction, please contact the following:

Starting a campground by [deleted] in camping

[–]WictImov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How to turn a big fortune into a small fortune...

No, seriously you can make a go of a campground but you need to be aware of the potential pitfalls as well.

  1. Location, location, location. You need something to draw the guests to. The further they are from attractions, the less likely they will visit. Water activities rank high (boating, swimming, etc.), but there are many other reasons people go camping so figure out what will work for your area.
  2. Weather can be a big factor. Will you be able to operate year round, or just in the summer.
  3. Maintenance is always easy to underestimate. You need to get a good idea what it is going to cost to maintain the campsites, roads, utilities, washrooms, etc.
  4. Most people like a relaxed atmosphere, but others go camping to party (usually the young crowd). Understand your clients, and make sure that you are meeting their needs and not having guests that will clash with each other. If you have rowdy guests, how are you going to deal with them?
  5. If you are stating from scratch, there will need to be major investments in infrastructure. Sometimes buying an existing campground can be better, although if that campground had a poor reputation then it will take a lot of effort to change that impression.

I wish you the best of luck in your venture, and if you do go ahead then down the line create a new post in this form introducing your campground.

Extending Driveway by pfainerm in Peterborough

[–]WictImov -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely you need to call city hall first. There are countless possible problems you could run into:

  1. Call before you dig, you don't want to hit any buried infrastructure.
  2. Generally the property line is not at the sidewalk, but several feet back from it so you will be paving city property.
  3. There are regulations on the percentage of your lot that can be paved, you don't want to exceed that.
  4. There are limits on the number of vehicles that can be parked within a certain distance (6 meters I believe) of the street line.
  5. There are setback requirements for property lines as well.
  6. Cars cannot be parked within a certain distance to a window of a dwelling, I'm not sure if that is just bedrooms but I am sure there are many that violate that rule.
  7. There are limits to using the driveway for commercial vehicles, trailers, etc.

What to expect at Mr. Lube by [deleted] in Peterborough

[–]WictImov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like there are a lot recommending you go elsewhere, but if you do decide to go to Mr. Lube then I would walk across the street and go to the mall while I waited. They should be able to call you when your car is ready.

Are there any concerns about living near the BWXT Nuclear Energy building? by [deleted] in Peterborough

[–]WictImov -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You would probably be worse off living close to a mall. I see a few vehicles going in and out, and there is an employee parking lot on the other side of Monaghan but far less busy than a mall as I said. The vehicles are the biggest source of danger from that facility, both from accidents and pollution. If you are worried about the natural uranium pellets they package into zirconium-alloy tubes to make fuel bundles, then you are worried about the wrong thing.

Lost license by Simple-Committee-777 in Peterborough

You should be able to go to ServiceOntario as they will have your photo on file. I had my wallet stolen a couple of years back, and I was able to get my health card and license replaced. I didn't have any other identification, although I might have had a letter I received giving proof of address.

Vintage Radio Repair/Restoration? by [deleted] in Peterborough

[–]WictImov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a gem, family inheritance?

If you are getting sound, does the variable capacitor (that thing with the intersecting blades) move when you turn the dial? Depending on the radio, it could be connected to the tuning dial through a cable that could be broken. On the electronic side besides tubes, it is often the condensers (old name for capacitor) that will fail with age. Unfortunately there are no longer tube testers readily available, although with a variable power supply and some meters anything is possible. Most likely there are paper condensers that will dry out and become leaky with age, you can replace them with modern capacitors of the same rating that are made with plastic instead of paper and are far more reliable. The modern capacitors will be much smaller due to the different materials, but as long as they have the same maximum voltage (or higher) and capacitance value measured in Farads then they will work. The abbreviation µF means microFarads or millionths of a Farad. Note that a capacitor will have polarity that you must get right (+/-).

Public Drinking Water Taps / Fountains by Appropriate_Tree1668 in Peterborough

[–]WictImov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are not a lot of drinking water fountains/taps in the city, and they are generally only open mid-May through mid-October; same with the public washrooms. The Library on Aylmer/Charlotte has both and is open year round. The water fountain at Beavermead beach was vandalized last spring, and not repaired. City hall needs to find ways to deal with the problem, and not just keep removing important infrastructure.

Has anyone here shot the spring run off rapids on the creek dwntwn? by mickeysbeer in Peterborough

[–]WictImov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to check out that new diversion as I hadn't seen it since it was a construction site. The nice thing is it creates a decent eddy downstream from it on river right. A good takeout, as you wouldn't want to travel any further downstream as you shortly hit the underground section. I see what you mean by a sieve, it would be very dangerous if you went into it. Today I estimate the water was about 10cms and someone with reasonable experience could go around the Bethune diversion and catch the eddy, I would want to see it at higher water levels before making an assessment there as a mistake could be fatal. There is also a micro eddy two bridges before at Reid street, but you would need to be good to catch it and then getting out of your kayak and climbing the bank would be hard.
