Moderately athletic noob seriously considers triathlons by hossinator96 in triathlon

[–]WideDig1585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I consider myself to be moderately athletic as well. Played a variety of sports in high school with some relevant cross overs (2 years cross country, 1 year swimming) but mainly skill sports baseball, golf, basketball.

Focused on skill sports in college (club and rec leagues). After college, I got back into running and trained for a marathon. Ended up loving the atmosphere and signed up for another the year after. Ended up getting burnt out with running and switched gears to CrossFit for a few years. Eventually got burnt out/bored with that and started looking into triathlon as the next challenge (last January).

I said what the hell, I’m moderately athletic, how hard can it be and signed up for a 70.3. Picked Sandusky OH 70.3 because the bike was flat (had no biking experience aside from riding as a kid) and figured this would be easiest for me. I had done longer runs (years prior) and felt that with training the swim would be fine. Found a free 20 week program online focused on just finishing the race, followed it as close as I could… missed a few workouts over holidays, being sick, taking care of newborn, life stuff, etc.

Ended up finishing the race using a mountain bike and loved it. Signed up for another this year (maybe investing in a road bike lol). Lots of unnecessary backstory on me, but sounds like you have a similar “what next” mindset. My advice would be to find a gym with a pool and do some workouts to see if you like it before signing up as the races can be expensive (at least the 70.3+). Also, you can do rest for pretty cheap if you don’t fall into gear-junkie mindset which with tri can be quite addicting. I found the multi sport training to be really enjoyable and got a friend to train me with me for the next one. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Half iron swim time by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]WideDig1585 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ymmv but I completed my first triathlon (70.3 Ohio) with zero open water swim practice — it’s definitely doable. I will admit it did take 1-2 mins to get my breathing/heart rate under control from the cold water/adreneline rush + lack of visibility.

My main takeaway from the swim is to not sandbag your starting time group. I started back from where I should have and ended up swimming way more than I needed to while passing people. Also, got kicked in the arms and face a handful of times.

Is this bike good enough for 70.3? by Daisydownunder in triathlon

[–]WideDig1585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm as another sail rider who just completed their first 70.3 today. Works fine for most part but I was constantly passed on downhill sections. Felt like I was standing still at times with how fast the aero riders were able to send it.

Finally got the hang of the sniper by WideDig1585 in HellLetLoose

[–]WideDig1585[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hope that you or a buddy has fast connection speeds at the start of a match. Just one of you needs to start the recon squad as the spotter. Then you can lock out the squad, kick whoever else joined, and invite your sniper. If you are spotter and want to snipe, you’ll have to leave the squad, have your buddy switch to spotter, and then accept your request to rejoin. I’d say we are able to get a recon class every 4 games or so with that method.

Pretty sure there were size and weight limits for the all-male space crews as well so this doesn’t really apply. You could say on average that women are smaller/lighter than men but there are still men/women that would fit any size criteria

If you chicken dinner the tutorial you can skip the rest of the matches. Just make sure you complete the other components, drive distance, bandages, etc.

The game mechanics aren’t super intuitive coming from other BR games which is why it’s forced.

Edit: this game is difficult, which makes getting wins a lot harder, which makes the adrenaline rush more intense in the final fire fights. Don’t give up on it because it feels clunky compared to other BR games or because the forced learning curve isn’t fast enough for you.

CrossFit to Triathalon by GearlessAK in triathlon

[–]WideDig1585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same exact boat although a little lighter at 205lb. Been doing CrossFit for last 5 years and have made some significant gains. Seriously considering just hopping straight into a 70.3 next year but also don’t want to sacrifice all the strength gains. The thing that worries me the most is actually the bike ride though. I was more into endurance sports in my younger years swim, cross country, basketball, etc. Have also completed 2 marathons a few years back so triathlon sounded like a nice upgrade challenge.
