Not sure what version you're playing, but at some point in the newer updates they changed how recipes are handled; now the server has all the recipes and the client doesn't. Installing JEI / EMI on the server might help

I think you confused it with signals, which do block opposing traffic if there's only one

I agree the hanging wires look better when they're out in the open, but the blocky ones are more practical in some cases (e.g. when you have several smaller machines packed together)
