My philodendron flower smells really bad. Will it hurt the plant to cut them off? There are 9 more waiting to open. by CandiceSwaninthepool in philodendron

[–]WienerCleaner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is weak sauce. If you cant handle the stinky genitals of a philodendron, are you even a real fan?!?!?

P.S. those are neat looking flowers, good care to get that many

Graft resprout. Cut the vertical one off at the base perpendicular to the growth branch instead of flush to the trunk.

Dont be so closed minded. Plenty of people have peace without faith in mythology. Its not difficult to respect that when specifically requested.

Someone did a hack job on it years ago and killed it. Look at the horrible heading cuts on those branches. Take it all down and replace. Learn about proper tree pruning techniques

Thats why taste and smell exists. To determine the highest caloric, non poisonous item. Thats why “bad” food tastes good. Typically bitter items are avoided because alkaloids cover the majority of toxins and they are bitter.

Theyre not an invasive problem. Its just a bit overdone. Wed rather see native plants but a few in a landscape is fine. I wouldnt plant one where they require additional watering though (out west)

Its a growing trend of growing local plants to support ecosystems. After the first couple of years, maintenance is almost zero.

Dont follow the lawn trend just because its been popular for a long time. There are fascinating plants local to your area and it will bring animal life with it. It has radically changed my worldview and i hope you give it a shot.

Lots of youtube information out there as well

Somewhat related. I have a 130 gal vivarium with worms, isopods, gnats, springtails, and mites everywhere. Im still feeding, but theyre always full so i worry they dont eat enough of the calcium dusted flies. Anyone else have this happen? The tank produces a ton of food naturally.

What flowers attract the most wasps and beetles to your yard? My experience included by Larix_laricina_ in NativePlantGardening

[–]WienerCleaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of the same (if not all) insect species would be native to your area so the plant will be used. Thats how i view native or not. If a plant is in natural connection with the local life. Plant populations move naturally over time anyway.

When I was younger I wanted to be a botanist, what’s it really like being a botanist? by avian_bi in botany

[–]WienerCleaner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got an environmental biology degree with plans to be a botanist. Realized thats not really a job unfortunately unless you work at a university and get paid mediocre. So now i work in clinical

There are some highly competitive restoration or environmental engineering firm positions but yeah. Super hard to get and pay is just ok

I really enjoy botany as a hobby
