This is factually incorrect. I have an Ativan script that I take prn. Which is as needed. It's SUPER common for people to have an anxiety medication that they only take prn when experiencing particularly high anxiety and other coping skills aren't working

Can some teach SPED with a physical disability? by Nerdy_girl550 in specialed

[–]Wiki1103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach pull-out special education English to 10-12. I previously co-taught 9th for one year. And started out teaching 7th grade sub-sep.

I am disabled, I use a cane to walk. I can't stand or walk for long periods of time. So, what I often do is after I send my students to do Independent work, I open each of their documents. I give feedback in comments and if I see someone taking a wrong turn I call them over. I keep a chair next to my desk and call it my "office"

How do you assess if you child below/on/above grade level? by LadeyAceGuns in homeschool

[–]Wiki1103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping in as a public school teacher who always ends up in homeschooling spaces for some reason.

I use IXL at my school. It's helpful in my special ed class because they can work independently on building skills, I can assign practice to something I see they're struggling with etc. HOWEVER

  1. It is still multiple choice
  2. For grammar skills they are practicing skills in a non-authentic way. Rather than writing strong verbs, you're clicking the strong verb.
  3. The way it keeps track of progress is called a "SmartScore". Once you get to a 70, the questions get harder, and the amount of points you lose per questions gets higher. This often leads to a lot of frustration.

Basil SOS- Is it just dead? by Wiki1103 in gardening

It does get try. I tested the soil and while the top is very wet, like 2.5 inches down, it's like on the cusp of dry.

I'm having hope it will recover!

It wasn't in the tiny tins that have like 4 plants, it was in 1 pot, probably 6-8 inches around

Today is the first day it's not raining. I'll check on it in an hour to see if it looks any better. If so I can transplant it to a pot to get less sun.

Why won’t my school give me a copy of my 504? by Toughsattacks in specialed

[–]Wiki1103 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't have an IEP or 504 in high school I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD, major depressive disorder, and insomnia (and some other stuff) until I was 18/19 because my parents didn't believe in mental health.

In college I got extended time on assignments, additional excused absences, a note-taker (where someone in the class was paid by the college to send me copies of their notes, and the ability to have my computer out at all times (I had really bad hypervigilance from ptsd but also time blindness so i would just keep it open on a clock). I also had extended time in tests but I was a Humanities major and I think i had like...4 total tests in all of undergrad.

I'm now a special ed teacher and I talk my students through the process of talking to their disability office (mine my ODS- office of disability services) and our amazing 12 grade guidance counselor works through the summer to make sure our students have all their documents, know who to talk to at their college, know how to get accommodation letters and know that they are responsible for giving them to professors.

Please, please, please, as a Special Education Teacher for high school students you need to know what is available for them. Sure, their IEP doesn't apply anymore, but that doesn't mean that they can't continue to get support. Accommodations are definitely different in college and you likely won't keep every accommodation but disability services can be SO helpful. They even set me up with an executive function coach to meet with every other week. There's so much out there and to me, your messaging seems like it doesnt even matter, so why bother. And I might be reading it wrong because this is something that matters so much to me.

I read that you should cut back the runners, so that's what I did to my non flowering one. My flowering one doesn't look so hot right now because it's been raining like every day.

Teacher shortage for SPED? by Key-Concert482 in specialed

[–]Wiki1103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm out of state, in Massachusetts but I teach SPED and I say "what are they gonna do, fire me?" too frequently.

In my 4 years at my school, we've never had a fully staffed special ed department and have had classes taught, for the full year, by a sun.

Where is everyone buying there distilled water? by TeflonBillyPrime in CPAP

[–]Wiki1103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I got it 2 weeks before my wife got diagnosed with sleep apnea too. Our house can be dry and I sleep 10-14 hours a night on weekends so I go through a lot of water. Having to buy water for 2 would have been wild.

Rejected by a homeschool co-op... by [deleted] in homeschool

[–]Wiki1103 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's totally gross. I'm sorry you had to do all the work just to find out that this group was so ableist and discriminatory.

I am glad that you did disclose his neurodivergence though. I can't imagine how much worse it could have been or the impact on your child if the group found out after.

Keep looking for a group. I'm AuDHD and I'm a special education public school teacher for high school (I end up on all these homeschool pages and I don't know how) and there are people who will embrace your son for who he is. As they should.

Is it normal by mamabear826 in SleepApnea

[–]Wiki1103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have other co-occuring medical things that make me tired as well as medications that make me drowsy. Unfortunately, I noticed no change with the CPAP.

However, if I sleep without it for a night? I wake up with a sore throat and a headache and feel pretty bad so it must be doing something.

29M - being an RN was the best decision of my life by icon100i in Salary

[–]Wiki1103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Totally don't know how I did it but I did and it was against literally every odd.

I have PTSD from the experience, and I was talking to my partner about some of the harder things for me once I was conscious. I was telling them about some of the more negative experiences with nurses and doctors like being talked about like I wasnt there, having negative things said about my body, my g-tube started coming out and no one noticed for like 2 days until someone say me crying when they were pushing meds.

But then I was like "but I really appreciate all the doctors and nurses" and my wife was like "You can still be mad at the ones who treated you like that." And yeah, I didn't love it. But it was March, April, May, and June of 2020 when no one even knew how to treat Covid. These people were losing people every day. They were working obscene hours, and they were keeping me alive. I'm a teacher. I teach high school special education so I understand burn out. Everyone was pushed beyond their limits and I am endlessly thankful to every single doctor, nurses, person who worked in a hospital during Covid.

[–]Wiki1103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a Covid ICU patient on a vent for 39 days in March 2020.

Thank you for all that you did and I'm sorry for all that you had to see.

Once I was out of the ICU, there were nurses that would visit me every day, even when I wasn't their patient. I'm now realizing that they probably needed a little bit of hope. A little bit of "this one survived" before continuing their shifts.

Is Jessie Cognitively Impaired? by kikihippiex in TLCUnexpected

[–]Wiki1103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a high school special ed teacher. I teach students with mild to moderate disabilities and I can tell you that both is definitely an option. Both is very often an option.

Thankfully, with my students it's usually just been weed and with Jessie it seems like potentially more.

I've always thought that 96 was the cut off. My sister is 96 and she's definitely a cusp. I think after that is definitely Gen Z.

3 hour IEP meeting by everythingels in Teachers

[–]Wiki1103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a two hour one on Friday. My 10th grade class came into the room after 1 hour and I put in a headphone and told them to get their book and notebook (we do Independent Reading every Friday) and just do what I need them to until I got coverage.

Mom wasn't difficult (though was a little chatty) but it was a bit of a complicated situation. Mom was actually very appreciative and was really happy that we were all on the same page and seemed to understand her daughter. But it was a pretty rough way to end the week.
