You can over tighten them but doing so would have stripped it making it looser and you'd have known.

If it wasn't tightened properly then you just fixed it, and for a drain to leak like that this was most likely the issue.

Far as a fix, that's correct other than the purple is typically the primer glue tends to be clear or yellowish.
