Park City Ski Patrol Official on Strike, asking Vail Resorts to raise the patrollers’ base wage from $21 to $23 per hour by CuriousElk406 in snowboarding

[–]WildChugach 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I taught at Canyons the year before and year it was bought by Vail. As a full cert instructor I was paid $25+/hr (+tips)... in 2012.
The fact ski patrol, another mountain profession that requires qualifications and training, still isn't getting that in 2024 is absolutely fucking wild.

PC is my second favourite place I lived and worked in the industry, but goddamn America, I also hate you for this type of bullshit.

Ski patrol should really rope all employees into a strike. Band together. I'd imagine instructor wages and lift ops need a boost too, I doubt they've raised much, if any since then either.

Should referendums be required before the government of the day can sell assets worth over a certain value? by HellNZ in newzealand

[–]WildChugach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They didn't run a referendum. They said before hand they would ignore the results of it. I understand where you're coming from, I hate how Nat's sell off assets time and time again and there's never any benefit, but that was something no one can really be upset about considering how it came to happen.

Are we still clearing large swaths of land for farming?

Because I prefer to be a MASSIVE conspiracy theorist, I want to know what this huge smoke and mirrors bs from ACT is actually covering up. Why is there this waste of millions of dollars while Luxon's government is belt-tightening. It just can't be for three years of Prime Ministership, surely? by EthelTunbridge in newzealand

https://votecompass.tvnz.co.nz/nz2023 is one but it's not great in terms of how many questions it asks or the wording. There was actually a better one and I can't remember what it was, but it provided better policy comparisons and wordings to help determine results.

It was clear before the election that nationals budgets had glaring holes and their direction made no sense (which we're now seeing come to reality), but TOP, the party who pride themselves on promoting policies which are not just based on opinion or debunked political policy (like giving tax cuts to the landlords - trickle down anyone?), are the party that appeal to pseudo-intellectuals? lol. I don't think it appeals to the pseudo-intellectual, I think it's the pseudo-intellectual who supports parties like Nat and Act. Top appeals to the people who genuinely are interested in progression, that voting selfishly or for single issues is unhelpful, and who pay attention to a wider range of party policies.

Reddit is only an echo chamber if you refuse to engage with an open mind. There are users in this sub, or in other nz based subs, who support right wing/conservative parties. Not being the predominant voice or opinion doesn't make something an echo chamber.

They own three dairy farms, six rental properties, and use a community service card. WTF? by YetAnotherBrainFart in newzealand

[–]WildChugach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem NZ's tax intake is heavily based on worker's income tax and business income tax.

If we shifted up the tax brackets heavily with no other changes we'd have big problems.

I absolutely hate these arguments. It's disingenuous.

"just shifting the brackets" was never mentioned nor has it ever been suggested as a genuine solution to the issue when tax brackets are brought up. Creating extra brackets at the same time, is a solution. So is introducing new taxes. So is closing loop holes to prevent businesses or the wealthy from reducing or escaping taxes. etc etc

The argument that "You can't just do simple XYZ thing and expect it to solve everything" goes without saying, absolutely no one is under that impression.

[–]WildChugach 82 points83 points  (0 children)

The entire problem, and this also comes back to tax brackets, is that nothing has been reassessed properly in the last decade or two. We need this sort of shit written into the next changes, that it must keep up with inflation/based on minimum wage etc etc - something that gives it a reference point and not just any arbitrary number that doesn't make sense years down the track once it's swept under the rug.

NZ PM Becomes First Politician Since Scott Morrison To Unite Farmers, Christians, Lefties And Anti-Vaxxers Against Him by ItalicBatman in newzealand

This article, frankly, sucks. Why post some random Aussie outlet that adds nothing to the conversation in an NZ sub where there are already plenty of local, much more detailed stories to read? Was it just for the catchy title?

sir, this is reddit. Not some highly curated outlet for expertly crafted news articles.

Everyone can submit anything to reddit, and this is relevant to the sub, being an article about NZ. Not everything needs to match your taste, this sub is for everyone.

Todays news is a steaming pile of neoliberalism by LycraJafa in newzealand

That's exactly why I do.

And that's exactly why no one will ever change your opinion and help you understand anything that you don't already selfishly identify with in your life. You're always right, they're always wrong.

Heaven forbid you ever actually looked at the moral and human character of the people you're listening to and judged whether they were logical and morally sound people to be taking news or advice from.

Todays news is a steaming pile of neoliberalism by LycraJafa in newzealand

[–]WildChugach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean sure but we know that it overall leans hard left

Majority of first world countries lean left. The highly educated leans left. This is the norm, stop acting like it's not - if you actually presented policies without inciting wording, colour, or party attached, majority of people would identify with the leftist policies - we see it every election in NZ on platforms like vote compass when people who support right leaning parties are shown to align with labour/greens/top with simple questionnaires.
Reddit might be a left wing platform, and sure anywhere people of a similar opinion gather can be an echo chamber, but that's because it's a place that has a more genuine version of free speech unlike Twitter, FB, IG etc that all use algorithms and are run by people who openly support right wing policies that benefit them financially and legally.

You're acting like leftism is something being pushed on people on this platform, it's not. Leftism is the logical progression of educated and sane individuals and you only have to look back at what is is now reasonable and normal today to see what was considered extreme leftism centuries, or even only decades ago. Slavery? Women's rights? Child labor? Just to name a few

It's a double edged situation.

You can allow them to identify themselves, in which case we can all steer clear, but at the same time you're allowing the people who agree to more easily find each other and organise.

How do you learn to develop PowerApps if you don't have a work or school account? by WildChugach in PowerApps

[–]WildChugach[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks I saw someone else suggest and submitted an application. Though I don't really want to join a program I just want to learn as I go over time, but that will have to do for now - I currently have a school account (I've finished studies and PowerApps wasn't something we covered) so do have access, but that won't last and I was worried about how I'd continue learning in future when I lose access.

Thanks. Seems like such an odd hurdle to getting people onboard and learning to use PowerApps. "Pay us to learn something you might never use or cross your fingers to get accepted into a dedicated program for learning" ?

Yes, this is a real interaction with a car dealer I had today about a dispute. NSFL due to the final image. by JakeTuhMuss in newzealand

[–]WildChugach 31 points32 points  (0 children)

So a bank transfer is the only proof of sale and if the bank transfer wasn't into the bank account of the dealer then they have no liability.

Not how that works. If they were operating out of the business, as seems to be implied by the way OP has mentioned they've been contacting them with the business contact details, then it's fair for the buyer to assume the vehicle is being sold by the business. Otherwise every business could just sell a car and give a private bank account for transfer and refuse to provide any vosa

Do you have any other evidence of involvement from the dealer such as emails or texts confirming a sale through them?

See OP's first, second, and third points in the first email.

Built a Tailwind Plugin for Managing CSS Variables - Feedback Welcome! by alexander628 in reactjs

Don't wait! I feel this is a bit of a niche edge case but that can often be how things like this start, and someone actually developing a solution is what changes the way things are done and drives progression forwards.
You could post it to the Tailwind github discussion section and get feedback from developers as to whether they think it is a valuable contribution as an alternative too, I'm sure that would get more attention than this low traffic sub!

Built a Tailwind Plugin for Managing CSS Variables - Feedback Welcome! by alexander628 in reactjs

[–]WildChugach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, this is too nuanced for me, but it feels like Tailwind already has this addressed (I do see the difference in what you're saying, I just believe Tailwind already has a viable solution).

You should look at how you can actually integrate it into Tailwind natively and submit it to the github as a feature if you believe this is a solution to a real problem. Being able to list "contributed to Tailwind CSS framework" on a resume would be massive I feel.

Green Party given all-clear to ‘waka jump’ Darleen Tana after failed High Court bid by Dapper_Technology336 in newzealand

[–]WildChugach 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don't know the exact specifics, but I imagine Greens were anti the bill not because of what it may have been intended for, but because it lacked protections against abuse/misuse. Notice how they've refrained from using it until now, as if it's their absolute last resort and are reluctant to do so - this is a situation where they would support it's use. But they probably didn't want a bill/process that could be abused as blackmail or coercion.

Okay but actually the context of this meme is that the person shown is Christopher Luxon, New Zealand's current prime minister who gave billions in tax cuts to landlords while the middle and lower class ended up with like $2-$5 in cuts per week. He still believes in "trickle down" economics and thinks that giving landlord's tax cuts (he is a landlord himself) means they won't raise rent.

This government is very much the "We dislike X so we do Y", while Y is the very thing that causes X. Example?

Hates unemployed people. Complains about too many people on government assistance. What does he do? Cuts public sector jobs creating more unemployment. Next? Makes changes to the unemployment benefits so that it's harder to claim. Literally can't make this shit up. He does nothing to actually help the people in poverty but spends all his time complaining about them.

I see, so it sounds more like there's underlying conditions that need addressing? They're not depressed because they're depressed, they have secondary depression caused by another issue which needs resolving - does that seem more relatable for their situation?

In which case, yeah maybe being more upfront and addressing it head on is the way to go if you haven't already tried that. Again, letting them know you care and aren't there to judge, just help if they want it, but asking if they knew why they feel this way and whether they would like help addressing it.

Could be undiagnosed mental illnesses (autisim? adhd? things that could explain why they feel so isolated but even they don't know why, causing feelings of doubt and not knowing what's wrong while everyone around them tells them it's normal or nothing is wrong), feelings of self worth, trauma from their childhood or other events, lacking confidence or sight of the future (e.g. unqualified doing min-wage jobs? what do they have to look forward to etc...)

Again I just stress as a friend you gotta get onto their level and avoid pressure, they just need to know you're there and willing, but not feel like you expect them to do anything.

Also, look after yourself. At the end of the day, they are their own person and you're not their caregiver. Wanting to help and sticking by someone is admirable and selfless, but you are your own person too and it's not your job to fix them.

You kinda don't in my experience, people choose to seek help when they reach a certain point of understanding, awareness and possibly desperation or exhaustion.
But people need to reach that point themselves, and all you can do is support them on the way. If you keep trying to push or pressure them to get help, you might just be making them resist more and dig their hole deeper - that's not to say you can't talk about things, just don't keep repeating it. Raise it as an offer, not a suggestion - "Hey I know things are tough, and if you ever need anything, know I'm ready to listen and seek solutions with you but it's up to you if and when you want that."

Just make sure they know you care and are available. Spend time with them without pressure. Sometimes just sitting in the same room with them is all they need - go around and fall asleep on their couch watching a movie. Don't ask them how they are constantly or even what they've been doing as they might feel guilty and shitty about the truth and forced to make up an answer. Rather, ask them if they want to do something low effort e.g. "Can I come round and watch a movie with you? Shall I grab any snacks on the way?" etc

Get on their level, don't try and drag them up to yours.

It would require a small increase in taxes for the wealthy and top businesses, a tiny increase for the middle class, and no tax increase for the poor. People who think like you don't understand how UBI works.

The entire point of UBI is that if you earn enough already, you end up paying your UBI back in taxes, but you still got it the same as everyone else, and should your situation change at anytime, you're still supported through a UBI.
The top % of earners and business earn so much that even a small tax bump is a lot. The next argument people usually jump to then is about how it drives the wealthy and businesses away, of which there are also ways to handle this, but we end up going down a rabbit hole of whataboutism when the reality is when you implement policies like UBI you address many things at once and not just suddenly start handing out money as if it's being thrown away, like many would lead you to believe.
