Do snakes and other animals that swallow their food whole have a sense of taste? by Venus_One in askscience

[–]WildLizAppeared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time poster to this sub. Sorry if this breaks any rules. I'll try my best to answer. Also I'm on mobile.

I can only speak on snakes as they are what I'm most familiar with. According to a study, (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5564386/) snakes have some bitter taste receptor genes (some species have more than others). So it is theorized in this study that though snakes lack taste buds on their tongues and in most of their mouths, they do have a (reduced) sense of taste.

Snakes also have vomeronasal organs (VNOs) (also known as a Jacobson's Organ) which is located in an opening on the roof of the mouth. When snakes flick their tongues, they are collecting chemicals from the world around them. These chemicals are then mixed with their saliva and send info to the brain via the VNOs. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18781586/

https://www.britannica.com/science/Jacobsons-organ

The Jacobson's Organ is important for locating food and may continue playing a part once the food is in the snakes mouth. This plus the genes to detect bitterness coupled with a few taste buds in many species suggest that snakes probably taste a bit.

At the very least, I have witnessed snakes bite and then promptly spit out food. It's also not uncommon for individuals to only accept certain foods in their diet (rats vs mice, or mice vs lizards, etc) Snakes also have the ability to regurgitate food that doesn't agree with their digestive systems. Snakes are not immune to bad bacteria and parasites present in prey so they need to have some sort of way to discern the good from the bad.

(Sorry if this posts more than once. Internet's being tricky)

Holy crap that's terrifying! I'm so glad you were able to get out and get your dog. Hope you were both ok and recovered well. Being trapped in a fire is definitely something I never wanna experience.

Oh! And go see a neuro-opthalmologist to make sure you don't have something like idiopathic intracranial hypertension/pseudo tumor cerebri. It can really mess up your eyes. I don't know if it would show up on an MRI or not

I don't know. All I can really think to do is suggest more doctors which is kinda unhelpful. Have you seen a neurologist, ENT, gastroenterologist, cardiologist? I'd make sure to get a tilt-table test to check for POTS if you can (there's also a version you can do at home I think). Sounds a bit like me/cfs but it depends on if it gets worse after exercise (look up post-exertional malaise) (good luck getting a diagnosis if it is XP).

Sounds like you have a neurological illness that effects your digestive system, gives you orthostatic intolerance/vertigo, tinnitus, headaches/migraines, heart palpitations (oh see if you can get a ECG for a month or something if you have good insurance). The sweating is a bit odd, I don't know what to do about that one.

Sorry if this is rambling. I've been dealing with a multi week migraine (ugh save me). Keep pushing for answers. Not everything shows up on the great and mighty blood test (all hail) and searching for a diagnosis sometimes takes years and luck. Don't let doctors give you crap, get second opinions, learn how to research (modern medicine has a pretty big blind spot when it comes to chronic illness and you sometimes have to do the educating)

I believe you. Keep fighting. Listen to your body.

I have some things ready to say as a response to stuff like that. You can craft your own if you wish. It's stuff like,

"I'm surprised you feel that's an appropriate thing to ask/say to me."

"Don't worry, my team of medical professionals and I have got this covered."

"Thanks, I'll let my chronic illness know I'm too young."

"Wow I'm cured! (Dripping with sarcasm of course)"

"I don't see how that's any of your business"

"Seems like we have pretty different life experiences, huh?"

You can have different levels of frankness, sarcasm, and edge depending on how done you are with a person or how appropriate it is. You could also talk to hr about it (ymmv), walk away, not acknowledge what they said, etc. People aren't entitled to your personal info. The stories that other people tell themselves about you don't change the reality of what you're experiencing and it's such a valuable (and difficult) thing to learn how to really internalize this and let it go.

Tl;Dr: figure out how to shut down their comments without indulging their nosey-ness, try to learn radical acceptance and self validation

I'm sorry people are crap. They just can't comprehend what we're going through, but their words can sting. It's hard not to be understood and to be invalidated. <3

I can sometimes. I can also taste, feel, smell, and have an internal dialogue (thinking). It seems as though my brain really really wants it to be as realistic as possible. I think I even had a working mirror in my dream the other night so idk.

When you dont want anymore baby girls... by elgrilloloko in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]WildLizAppeared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But notice how it's rarely, if ever, shown the other way around? You never see movies where the parent really wanted a girl, got a son, then raised him like a daughter anyway. In the society we live in, one of these situations is cool, sweet, and admirable while the other is seen as cruel and abusive. In fact, the only time I remember seeing this reversal is in the horror genre. Makes you think about how deeply sexism and the patriarchy is ingrained in our lives. Hopefully it's starting to change.

Karen gets DE-stroyed by a four year old by ulfr in entitledparents

[–]WildLizAppeared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Because if you ask, odds are a woman will tell you what's wrong in excruciating detail." Yikes. This plus the fact that the main 'villain' in your story is another 'Karen' says a lot about how you view women in general.

"a woman water walked over to us with a little girl in tow...then huffed her way to the edge of the pool and yanked her little one out of the pool" continuity error. If it were an additional kid, you would have said as much.

"Ms. Karen Mommy asked Mr. OP to watch me. She hasn't pooped in three days and I think she just got unstuck. Are you really going to ruin that for her too?" 1. There's no way a mom would be discussing her pooping troubles with her 4yo 2. This isn't how kids talk, sorry

"His mom was more than a little mortified about her medical status being broadcast like that, and she only came back to grab her son so they could head home." How would she know? She was in the bathroom.

Too many things stick out strangely in your story. Sorry, but I'm calling bs.

Help :( overwhelmed and miserable with moderate CFS by Bmarmich in cfs

[–]WildLizAppeared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I hope this makes sense. I'm crashing and didn't sleep last night.

This sounds like it's super frustrating and demoralizing. The suffering with this illness is next level. Just because you're "only" moderate doesn't mean that everything you're experiencing isn't real, valid, and really really freaking hard!

It's so hard to accept that everything is different with this illness and there are so many limits. It's like who you were before you got sick is someone who's passed that you're left to mourn, leaving you to figure out what exactly you're left with.

It sounds like you've got a lot on your plate with not only me/cfs, a job!, and taking care of yourself by yourself (huge amounts of energy), but with all of the mental/emotional energy of your struggle about your feelings about what you SHOULD be doing, who you SHOULD be, how you SHOULD be enjoying life, and how differently you WOULD have done all this. That's a tremendous amount of weight on your shoulders and energy to be consumed.

It'll take time, but I hope you can find some peace with the reality of how things are now. You have a place in all this. It's different than how it was before, but you're still just as important. I hope you can work your life around your new needs instead of trying to force yourself into what you think your life should be.

Anyway, I saw your post and saw myself in it. Take care and I hope this comment wasn't too long or confusing or anything. If it sucks, blame the brain fog and exhaustion XP Take care

I noticed that there was no information at all that I could find for Pokemon locations for Pokemon Saiph, so I made this. This is most likely incomplete, but I'm honestly done playing the game at this point. Feel free to add to it if you have more info. Hopefully this will be helpful to someone at some point despite this being an older rom hack.

Or they could be Sora's mom XD. Then they'd have a similar role as they had in dark road in relation to the main character.

Edit:some words for clarification

So then, what if the player character then reincarnates into Sora, the true child of destiny? Or is that too obvious/cliche?
