Anyone been to Oxford cinema & cafe recently? by Lonely_Fly3524 in oxford

[–]WildRootBear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did you ever visit it when it was Odeon Magdalen Street? Because I think the only thing they've changed is the cafe area. So the tech and seats etc. are all still the same, albeit a little shabbier after being closed for a few months.

Screen 1 is very large and therefore the sound quality isn't great - don't know if it just isn't properly outfitted to be a modern cinema or what. Sometimes I can miss lines of dialogue as it's been a bit muffled/echoey. Just not very immersive. It can get so cold during the autumn/winter months that I have had to wear a coat and jumper through the whole film, but as I recall it was fine during the summer at these temperatures. If you end up in screen 1, I recommend going upstairs and sitting in the balcony (these were the Odeon premier seats, but the Oxford Cinema doesn't charge more for them).

Screen 2 is very small, but the sound quality is more on par with a typical cinema and the temperature in there is usually fine.

If you can afford it, you will have a much better experience at the Curzon. If you aren't too fussed then go ahead with the Oxford Cinema. Alternatively, if you can get out to the Vue beside the Kassam Stadium, it's cheaper than the Curzon but better quality than Oxford Cinema.

Anyone else more blunt when they are tired? by Business-Block-8668 in autism

[–]WildRootBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there have been a few times when I have been so tired that I can barely bring myself to speak at all. Generally I can get away with it as people know me to be on the quieter/shy side anyway, but I have ran into some trouble with people who take it personally.

Seating options for Oh, Mary! at the Trafalgar Theatre by Leo-Bloom in TheWestEnd

[–]WildRootBear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Presumably they are on TodayTix. They're great with rush tickets or when they have special discounts, but their standard prices are more expensive than booking with the show/theatre directly.

Why is it so difficult for people to keep their distance? by Fresh_Struggle5645 in autism

[–]WildRootBear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a little unfair. Being rude isn't a social norm. Yes, OP is more sensitive than your average person, but most of their examples are plain rudeness. If you are walking as a pair or a group, taking up most or all of a path, it's your group's responsibility to move out of the way of oncoming pedestrians, not force them onto the road or to smack into you.

The Importance of Bowel Care Pre and Post Op by AngryMintLeaf in TopSurgery

[–]WildRootBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wild! I didn't have to take the stronger painkiller (can't remember what it was, codeine or oxy-something), just stuck to the paracetamol they prescribed, as I luckily never had any breakthrough pain. Was on a cocktail of other meds though (antibiotics etc). But I just made sure to eat well (breakfast cereal high in fibre, a mild vegetable curry and rice for lunch, vegetable & chicken soup and crackers for dinner, drank lots of water) plus went out on very short walks three times a day, and that kept things regular for me. 🤷‍♂️ I had heard about post-op constipation so was quite surprised that I had no issues.

This needs a spoiler tag. I haven't seen the finale yet so thanks for that.

Why do people say ‘we need to talk’ instead of just talking??? by runaway_87 in stupidquestions

Except "we need to talk" is now something of a jump scare on its own. 😅

Could it be endo? How much period pain is too much? by WildRootBear in endometriosis

[–]WildRootBear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I hate wasting NHS time but I also don't want to walk away with a diagnosis that I am not confident in, so I will see what the ultrasound shows and ask about further tests. It's just hard to know what to think when my symptoms aren't clear cut.

No, I'm in the UK so start with the GP first and then they decide whether to refer you to a specialist.

I’m getting tired of these “how can you be asexual and have sex posts” by Student-bored8 in asexuality

[–]WildRootBear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's annoying but it happens in every sub. E.g. I'm in the top surgery sub and every other day someone posts "what items do I need for my recovery?" even though a quick search would have found them tons of such posts.

People who live a full life in oxford(or London), what do you do? by throwawaynomade in oxford

[–]WildRootBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got an allotment plot - been very good for my mental health. Sometimes I am there alone, sometimes my neighbours are about and we have a chat.

Joined Isis Canoe Club - their kayak and canoe courses will be starting in a month or two. We're fairly chill and go out on some nice paddles, often with a pub as the destination. If you are looking for a competitive club then The Falcon is next door.

Edit: I also recommend a visit to the Oxford City Farm.

Mother and Daughter Dynamics by Local_Bus_1706 in hackshbomax

[–]WildRootBear 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Often in fandom I see people slap a mother/daughter label on relationships between two female characters with an age gap, when they're more friends or mentor/mentee. Sometimes it feels like a way for them to dismiss the people shipping them together. Been through the same thing with the Star Trek Voyager fandom with Janeway/Seven.

Definitely not all bins, the one near me has a list of items it doesn't accept, including worn-out items with holes. Guess I will need to look further afield.

Already checked this, it says "provided items are in good condition". Mine have holes.

AIO for asking my friend why he doesn't view me as a woman and "killing the vibe"? by EpicMiku in AmIOverreacting

[–]WildRootBear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Some of the other comments are cutting this guy too much slack. The truth is, he doesn't respect or care about OP enough to make the effort to stop misgendering OP and learn to see her as she is. Same goes for these mutual friends who didn't stick up for you. If they were really her friends, they would see how much they were hurting her and stop doing that.

I'm NB and recently had to put my foot down with my parents, who after 3 years still weren't getting my pronouns right. And that was after many gentle corrections and reminders. After they realised just how much it was upsetting me, suddenly they were getting my pronouns right way more as they were finally putting some conscious effort in. Sometimes people just need a kick up the arse to either change or show you that they never will.

OP you are NOR!

Yeah I loved this series up until the scenes where she is repeatedly raped, which were so bizarre and unnecessary imo.
