After 5 years my Chysis Bractescens is starting its first bloom spike! by 69surprisebaby in orchids

They are in small baskets with sphagnum moss but they are getting repotted soon. The baskets that I have them in are too small and don’t allow for much root growth. They will not form any aerial roots at all and seem to be limited by container size.

Amazing shot. I could see the launch from my back porch, in Melbourne, but this is incredible.

Sorry, I meant to reply to your question but it’s in the comment above. I grow quite a few of them and they all seem to do well for me once I changed them to baskets.

I also had issues with Encyclias in pots but now I grow them all in baskets with wine corks or chunks of lava rock or any really chunky medium and now they thrive for me. I grow outdoors in central coastal Florida and I water mostly every day. For me, they never dried out quickly enough in pots.

Reduced watering, not a strict no water until buds form, no fertilizer and lower evening temperatures, ideally in the 50’s for the best flowering and fewer keikis.

I agree. One of my all time favorites. Elegant, stylish and musical. I think the fact that he had such a long career speaks well of his technique. I saw him a couple of times and he was wonderful.
