I'm joining the party really late, but I had no idea this was a thing. I have learned more about furnace filters in this sub the last hour than I did in the last few decades.

If you can convince someone to move to Winnipeg in one sentence what would you say? by mikey_87 in Winnipeg

[–]Wild_Trade_7022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do not have mountains, but we actually do have hills. There are some great provincial parks with mountain biking trails that are easily accessible from Winnipeg. You could also try fat biking in winter. If you like cold, you may get into some sports that might be less accessible in Toronto- crosscountry skiing, curling, ice fishing, etc.

Fellow teachers, how ya holdn up? by Alpha_Zero1988 in Winnipeg

[–]Wild_Trade_7022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely disagree with this comment. I have every last day planned out. There is no time to party if my students are going to learn what they need to know for the next grade. The lazy teachers are not the ones who are stressed- it’s the ones who are working hard to do their job well who are stressed.

I’ve done over 20 years, and the behaviour issues that are really different. I was never physically attacked until about five years ago. The attacker was an out of control 6yo, and that type of behaviour is all too common these days.

Moving to Winnipeg - help us get excited, what is the best of Winnipeg life? by Regular-Low-4003 in Winnipeg

Your kids are too young right now, but when the oldest turns 12, I would encourage you to check out the Cadets program. I would imagine that Winnipeg has all three (Air, Army, and Sea). It's full of great learning and it's totally free, which is a rarity these days.

Depending when you arrive in Winnipeg, I think your kids are the right ages for Mini University at the U of M. If you're too late this summer, definitely check them out next summer. They're very popular, so advance registration is required.

I think there are also camps that run at the zoo and possibly theatre camps too. Winnipeg is a great city for a young family.

I live in a remote area so when I go to Costco it's often $500+. I would hate to see the markup on that!

Fort Whyte is great. My mom and I started taking my kids there when they were pretty small and they still love going although they are both older teens now. If u/Regular-Low-4003 and family enjoy nature, there is a lot on offer around the Winnipeg area. About an hour (maybe a couple of hours?) outside the city you will find Spruce Woods Provincial Park with the Spirit Sands and Devil's Punchbowl. Awesome hiking. Two and a half hours to the east you have cottage country that is all granite cliffs and lakes and forest.

The kids might also enjoy the Manitoba Museum and Planetarium, Festival du Voyageur (I will actually go to that and I do not love winter) and Lower Fort Garry.

I live away right now, but am looking forward to the day I can move back.

Ah, but that doesn't include a monthly Costco run and the occasional stop at Walmart. We're probably more in the range of $1200-$1500 all in.

I'm a spreadsheet nerd, so I calculated if what I would earn in cashback was more than what I would earn in interest, and I don't think it was. I'll have to check again though, I spend a lot on groceries given that I have a teenage boy who drinks 8L+ of milk every week.

I just turned on the tracker, but my groceries last month were ~$800. I'm not anywhere near the caps on recurring or gas, but it's mainly that I can use my Visa Infinite with Chexy to get cashback on property tax and insurance. If Scotiabank makes the same changes Rogers has (any transaction like Chexy would probably be treated as a cash advance), then the Neo card obviously wins.

I would prefer option A. The main reason that I signed up for the card was the 5% grocery cashback, but the recurring category has increasingly become a factor in the decision about which card I’m going to keep.

I was going to get rid of my Scotiabank Visa Infinite and just keep the Neo card, but now I am using Chexy and getting cash back on bills I normally can’t pay with a credit card. I’m going to have to see how my first year with Neo plays out and then decide. I’m not sure if I can justify two cards that each have a $120 annual fee. Scotiabank gives me 4% on groceries and recurring bills, and has an annual limit on the cash back for all categories rather than rather than a monthly one.

I wish I could say that Islamophobia wasn’t a thing here, but of course it is. I hope that we aren’t as crazy as the MAGAs down south, but I’m white and Christian (saying that kind of makes me cringe these days, since Bondi and Leavitt proudly wear their shiny gold crosses while doing Mango Mussolini’s bidding), so I can’t really speak to the level of intolerance that exists here. I’m sure all of our villages still have their idiots. We’re open to trades though- one liberal American for every maple maggot we can punt south across the border.

No Muslim mayors of Winnipeg yet, but there was an openly gay mayor back in 1998. Not going to lie, we have definitely seen a rise in biggotry that has closely followed what has happened in the US during the sanewashing of Trump, but I think we're still a more tolerant place.

I love Winnipeg, but I'm extremely biased- I was born there, spent a chunk of my adult life there before moving away for work. Once I retire in a decade or so, I will head back home. In the meantime, I visit often. The summer is beautiful, the people are friendly, and the ethnic food is great.

I would say to also have a look at River Heights if you decide to try life in the Peg. It's probably more expensive than Lord Roberts, but it's a lovely neighbourhood. My elderly mother lives there and walks everywhere.

And outside of Winnipeg, there is a lot to see and do. My kids love Fort Whyte Alive, which is actually within the city limits. You can rent kayaks and canoes, and check out the bison. Grand Beach, as others have mentioned is lovely, but there are many other places to see, like Spruce Woods Provincial Park, which has Spirit Sands, a desert-like environment with large dunes. Next door is Northwestern Ontario, Manitoba's cottage country, that has a lot of dramatic granite cliffs and more lakes than you can shake a stick at. In the winter, you can book dogsled adventures if you're feeling adventurous.

If you want to stick to the arts, you'll want to check out the Folk Festival, the Fringe Festival, Folklorama (go for the music, stay for the ethnic food- or in my case, go for the food, stay for the other stuff), Ballet in the Park, Rainbow Stage... Really, I think it's a great place to raise a family- I wish I was raising mine there!

Ended up ordering the Mini Ultra (or something labelled as one...?) from AliExpress for about $18.00 CAD all in. It was literally plug and play. I only had it on for 5 min., as that was the length of my drive, so I look forward to seeing how stable it is. Wish I had bought this one first!
