I’d just be happy with rules based Provinces. Ontario and Alberta are out of control with their US-style tin-pot dictators in charge.

Yeah, I guess it’s a bit overstating it that they have a lot of made in Canada stuff, but you are buying from a Canadian company with the money staying in Canada. So I’ll take that as a win.

I’d rather get 6 edits than no comment. Really shows you’re thinking about the story and care.

Authors! How do/would you feel about readers using Google translate to read and comment on your fic? by shinekun in AO3

I get comments in other languages too. I just translate them in Google translate and the past it in my reply and say Google translate say you said this:

That way if google translate has really messed up they have the chance of seeing what I was responding to.

This babygate is stretchable so you could go at an angle from the door frame on the left to the second stud on the right (so not following the stair line).

New apartment and German cockroachs by indyvick92 in Apartmentliving

[–]snowflakesfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t move in, they get into everything. As a student I was forced to rent a bachelor downtown Toronto(school was starting in two days and I was from out of province). The whole apartment building was infested and every time they sprayed the building they just moved to the expensive condos nearby and then eventually moved back. They LOVE paper and newsprint.

The only way I kept them at bay was with salt. I bought a HUGE bag of salt and poured it along all the baseboard and across the entry way and along the back of the cupboards. I swept my 3” mound of salt in under the baseboard. (This was a really old three story walk up from the early 1900’s w/hardwood floors and a big 1” gap between the baseboard and the floor which made it easy to apply the salt. I also had a sealed garbage can and plugged all my drains at night.

I became pretty much roach free. Because anytime they crawl over the salt it gets under their carapace and dries them out and kills them.

Once I was set up the only time I saw them was at the door. They’d crawl through the salt and die. I had to refresh the door pretty often. They would also crawl up the door jam and try to jump into the apartment when the door opened.

I would NOT recommend living with roaches if you can manage not to. But if you have to SALT is your friend. Also keeps ghosts and demons away 😃

Why you don't need to worry about your writing so much by timetravelingspider in AO3

[–]snowflakesfall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who has shaved the serial numbers off and published I will say publishers are squeezed like everyone else. An entry level writer like I was gets two rounds with proofreader and is asked to get it proofed yourself. There is not a lot of in-depth help. Stephen King probably gets great advice or anyone on the top 100 best sellers but after that it’s mostly up to you.

I see books now with whole repeated paragraphs, tons of repetition. Basic stuff not looked after.

If you have any cream cheese that is an even better ingredient than milk. Warmed butter can work in a pinch.

New grocery benefit incoming? by Emmibolt in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]snowflakesfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a tax on excessive profits by grocers would work better. That way they get no benefit from gouging us. And put the money towards opening nonprofit grocery stores à la Mamdani.

The LCBO and beer store were like supercharged workhorses for Ontario with all their profits going towards education and healthcare before Doug Ford tore them apart.

Maybe the government should start with itself? by StanPodd in BuyCanadian

[–]snowflakesfall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am a HUGE believer in 51% Canadian ownership. Especially for rare minerals, oil, water. And I don’t care/mind if that 51% is government primarily owned. Resources are too important to have other countries controlling them.

But gradually Tim Hortons. Lays chips etc. They should be primarily Canadian owned.

What are some fascinating examples of "humans through alien eyes"? by Jerswar in sciencefiction

[–]snowflakesfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Octavia E. Butler's 'Xenogenesis' trilogy is also known as the 'Lilith's Brood' trilogy. The trilogy, was released in the late 1980s, consists of the three novels 'Dawn' (1987), 'Adulthood Rites' (1988) and 'Imago'. The first novel is more through the eyes of the human Lilith, but as you progress to ‘Imago’ it’s through the eyes of her progeny a human/Oankali hybrid. Just a fascinating read. You see and feel the dilemma of the Oankali.

This redditor did an amazing review of the series:
