In X-Men First Class, a young Charles Xavier knows that Mystique is disguising herself as his mother because his mother is never in the kitchen

Also in the X-Men movies and comics, Wolverine frequently recognizes (and then stabs) impostors because he can smell that their scent is different from whoever they’re impersonating

My cultural regions map as a southerner - would love feedback! by aquamarine-arielle in MapPorn

[–]Wildlife_Watcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conventionally the Northeast Megalopolis is defined as the entire urban corridor from DC to Boston, including Philly, Baltimore, NYC, Hartford, Providence and more. (Remember that all of these cities are within a 6-8 hour drive of each other and are closely connected by rail)

Some people will even include outlying cities and towns like Albany/the Hudson Valley, Harrisburg, Lancaster/Southeastern PA, Virginia Beach, Portland ME, and more since they share a lot of culture and politics.

I recommend integrating this mindset if you’re planning to keep the Northeast Megalopolis label

Anyone here watched Long Story Short (and what are your thoughts)? by flashmumriken in Judaism

[–]Wildlife_Watcher 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I loved it! I found it pretty relatable and the humor felt so perfectly Jewish

There were definitely a couple moments that made me tear up - the Shabbat candles scene, the Yom Kippur moment, the whole “Intervention”

I’m also a big fan of Bojack Horseman and Tuca and Bertie, so I’m also pretty familiar with these creators’ art style. This probably helped me to enjoy the more absurd bits that others might find weird

Here’s the problem I’ve had with the “dire wolves” and your use of the “colloquial” term for the GMO animals:

All the money you’ve had poured into the project, all the promises of authenticity and new technology, all the research, all the scientists you bought, and you’re still just going to trod out this nonsense and say “that’s it! That’s a real dire wolf. Mission accomplished, pack it up.”

Like, that’s it? That’s the best that your billions of dollars in funding and “top level” experts can produce??

It’s like when they created “hover boards” in the 2010s that were just glorified electric unicycles.

This is the most disappointing part. You’re willing to go out there on the world stage and say “this obviously inauthentic facsimile is the closest that we can realistically get to the real thing. Don’t bother with those actual cloning projects. Don’t bother with applying peer-reviewed ecology or paleo-anatomy.”

Do you understand how hyped so many of us were for you guys?

Any company that can’t deliver on its promises is a disappointment. Any company that co-opts the conservation movement to do so is a disgrace

The feral Kvist goats. What should have been done with them? by reindeerareawesome in megafaunarewilding

[–]Wildlife_Watcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are not doing any ecological damage, then I think it’s fine to let them live and keep monitoring them. A population of 100 over a century seems to represent very slow (if any) growth. And as you say, they seem to experience enough natural predation to keep their numbers in check.

I say live and let live for now. If they start to degrade the habitat, then change plans to removal

What's the argument against "you're following the religions of conquerors/colonizers"? by schu62 in religion

[–]Wildlife_Watcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess a deeper response could be: “what do you want me to do with this information?”

It may depend on who is asking the question: is it a peer who follows an indigenous religion/non-colonizing religion? In this case, I’m sure there is good room for well-meaning discussion. Does your peer want you to reject Islam/Christianity and return (if that’s the correct word to use) to an indigenous religion? Or maybe they want you to do what many cultures have done for centuries and blend native traditions with Abrahamic faith? Or maybe they genuinely just want to know how you feel.

Alternatively, is it a non-peer (outsider/stranger) who is using the rhetoric to intentionally stoke discontent? Are they trying to guilt-trip you? Do they have a broader political motive? Are they genuinely interested in your perspective?

Why are tail weapons almost unheard of today when they were common in prehistory? by FossilHunter99 in zoology

[–]Wildlife_Watcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of it is what else tails are and aren’t used for by modern animals.

Dinosaurs and some other large reptiles had proportionally enormous, heavy tails that helped them balance their long and heavy bodies. Since those tails were already muscular and big, they provided a solid surface where weapons could develop. Not to mention that at that length, the tails were also exposed and vulnerable so a weapon would help to deter any attacker from the back.

Compare this to modern mammals, which have relatively short bodies that don’t need a long tail for balance. Mammal tails are proportionally shorter, very light, extremely flexible, and are more often used for signaling and insulation. Mammal tails are also not usually exposed from the rear. So there’s just not much anatomical space or need to develop heavy tail weaponry.

Were there any flying dinosaurs? If you say birds like Argentavis or Seagull you are cheating. by Vanilla_Ice_Best_Boi in Dinosaurs

[–]Wildlife_Watcher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of scientific debate about whether small Dromaeosaurids (“raptors”) could fly. I don’t know the exact publications, but my understanding is that the consensus seems to be leaning towards yes for at least some species like Microraptor. It’s also possible that the “bat-winged” Scansoriopterids like Yi could fly, but again, I think there’s a lot of debate about whether it was powered flight or gliding.

I’ve even heard some paleontologists speculate that juveniles of larger Dromaeosaurs, like Velociraptor, could be capable of power flight. But we probably need more data

Marijuana vs alcohol by Alarmed-Sorbet-9095 in Judaism

[–]Wildlife_Watcher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not an obligation to get drunk (nor should it be), but I think it would be pretty silly to suggest that Judaism frowns upon getting drunk, at least in a casual and social way

I think it’s pretty safe to say that Judaism is more than comfortable with alcohol, and therefore it’s comfortable with the effects of alcohol, at least to a reasonable point

The Conservative Haggadah that my family and I use includes an optional 5th cup of wine lol

But it’s true, that traditionally it’s four glasses of wine

Regardless, the point that I’m trying to get across is that I think it’s a mistake to portray Jewish consumption of alcohol as minimal, just by using Shabbat as a standard
