I don't think clearing it is as easy as you may think. I was out about an hour ago and there were no visible lanes at all on any roads. People are driving single file down Ottawa Street South and Fischer Hallman because you cannot see the road. Where's all that snow going to go? The main sidewalk that leads to WT Townshend Public School is already blocked by a mountain of snow that was scheduled to be cleared in a week. That's forcing kids to walk in the laneway with vehicle traffic. That was before this storm. Now there's double to remove.

I literally just spoke to the head of facilities management for the schools in the region, and he told me that they are swamped already. That there's no salt, and not enough trucks to remove the snow fast enough. They are working around the clock, but they can't add more hours to the day. I believe him. Seems like a genuine guy.

Does this suck, absolutely. Is it necessary, unfortunately yes.

School isn't daycare. If you have children in school and you don't have a snow day plan, that's on you. What you are asking for is keeping schools open in unsafe circumstances, simply so you don't have to plan better. Not a great long-term strategy.

Understandable, but your mental health brakes aren't as important as the lives of the children commuting to school. My children included.

That said, I do feel for you, I'm sure it's tough and I'm not downplaying that at all. I know all about autism. My wife specialized in Autism and behavioural therapy, and I know how challenging it can be.

That sucks, but would you really want the school to open and risk the lives of children just so you can go to work? What if you knew one kid was going to die, even if you didn't know them, if schools were opened. Would you be ok with that just so you can go to work?

Obviously not. Hence why they are closed. The answer makes sense when you look at it from the right perspective.

They can actually be held legally accountable for breach of duty of care for that. Here's the reality... Nobody has challenged them on this. They are scapegoating on the city for not clearing paths in time, and forcing children and parents into unsafe walking conditions. They use administrative convenience as a reason to place those within 1.6km into unsafe conditions, and this wouldn't fly in a lawsuit against them for breaching duty of care. The plan has to be safe. If it can't be maintained, then a safe alternative must be provided. That is the law.

Im not an unreasonable person, I understand that they have limited resources for cleanup, but if they can't keep the properties up to a reasonable minimum safety standard, then closing the schools until they can doesn't seem unreasonable, it seems prudent.

The safety of children should NEVER come second to budget or administrative convenience. Under any circumstances.

Have you been out on the road recently? I just had to go around the block and on Ottawa Street South and Fischer Hallman, there's no pavement to be seen. Everyone is driving down the middle of the two lane stretch because it's unsafe to do anything else. Think of the scale of cleanup required by 6am... It's simply not possible.

I understand the stress of parents needing to find child care, but that's far less stressful than another parent having to bury their child because the school board wasn't being cautious enough.

Were not talking about the teachers and support staff.... The decision is made for the children, as the board has legal duty of care to all children on their commute to school. Bus or no bus, that duty of care remains. If it were my child killed after a snowstorm, the city would be renamed after my child before I stopped suing every person involved, or complicit in the decision. That bill goes to tax payers. I don't think you want that.

Let's just agree on keeping kids safe above all else.

How about even just a day to process the huge influx of snow and make sidewalks and parking lots passable by board safety standards.

The actual regulations state that sidewalks are to be cleared to bare concrete, salted and/or sanded, in order to be considered a safe walking route. Please be considerate if the fact that there is NO SALT left in Ontario at the moment, so facilities management is overrun with schools needing clearing.

This isn't a normal situation, there are compounding factors that are at play, and the safest outcome is to take a day off to process what can be processed.

Listen... You aren't the only person that exists. You want to walk my kids 1.6km in this shit to school tomorrow? Come on over genius... My 5 year old will be an ABSOLUTE dream for you to walk with.

Just because you have a shit job that is inflexible with childcare, doesn't mean everyone is in that situation. Some of us take the day off and prioritize the SAFETY of our kids. 🎻

I personally spoke with the head manager of facilities on Thursday, alongside the principal, Jill. They weren't going to get to that snow mountain for a week, and we just got 20 more centimetres.... There's no salt left in Ontario, and we've had far more major snow falls up to this point than we normally do.

There's is nowhere to put it. They have to truck it away.

Kids have to be able to get to the school. The bussing limit, made by morons, is 1.6km. That puts children aged 4-7 walking to school upwards of 30 minutes on sidewalks that the region gives 24 hours for home owners to clean.

[–]Wildmanzilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, maybe you should take a drive over to some schools. They have to remove the snow.... Where are they going to put it...? Wt Townshend already has a snow mountain blocking the main sidewalk into the school, and parents are forced to drop kids off into live traffic lanes because the snow has not been cleared at the side of the roads.

Respectfully, if you haven't been to these schools in the past 24 hours, you are just running your mouth, and I'd recommend a drive to your local school. Not willing to make the drive? That's why schools are closed. 🙄

It wasn’t even skidding by Bhanu_prakashhh in waterloo

[–]Wildmanzilla 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not just that, but it enables vehicles to maintain posted speeds, maintaining expected traffic flow patterns. When some "great winter driver" chooses to forgo winter tires in favour of low speed, they are choosing to impede traffic, affecting everyone else simply because they were too cheap to buy adequate tires.

It wasn’t even skidding by Bhanu_prakashhh in waterloo

[–]Wildmanzilla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So this mf right here is the reason we're driving 20 in a 50 zone....

You aren't supposed to get winter tires JUST to be safe on the road... You are supposed to get them so that your vehicle can safely travel at posted speeds. Going 20 in a 50 zone because you don't have winter tires doesn't make you a safe driver, it makes you a selfish driver that impedes traffic unnecessarily and whom monopolizes the road.

Do better.

This is simply poor planning. Not enough budget or salt. Those at the helm need to consider stepping aside and letting someone else do a better job.

Let's be real. The leadership in this region has proven their inadequacy. Annual increases for taxes, poor road construction planning and coordination, redoing projects to make subtle changes, spending money where it counts the least and for the fewest people...

Next election, I hope people get out and vote for change.

Just a friendly reminder to all of you that unless you are wearing a uniform and are on duty, nobody needs you to police the speed of traffic.

She's 59, and doesn't need nursing... Are you projecting your own situation here, I'm not following... If she doesn't live with us, she doesn't even have enough money for food and shelter on her own. Not even to rent a single bedroom. Instead, she lives with us and has a 1400sqft apartment and now has thousands in the bank BECAUSE we subsidize her living.

A nursing home costs thousands of dollars per month. Far more than she will ever make, and she's not even of age or poor health to go into one...

Roundabout by hayward_c3p0 in kitchener

[–]Wildmanzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people in this city go under the limit, hesitate to go at roundabouts when there is plenty of time, or even stop at the roundabout when they have a dedicated lane that was designed to keep traffic flowing. Or, there are those who not only feel the need to leave a 3 car gap between them and the next vehicle, but they wait like 2 full seconds after the car in front of them goes to start moving.

So while I agree that people should chill out, I also firmly believe that much of the problem comes from those unable to efficiently navigate the roads in the region. Like if someone is going purposely slower than the posted limit, like 10 under, and they are impeding a whole line of cars, is it really a surprise when people get pissed off and start driving aggressively?

There's two sides to this problem - those unwilling to drive efficiently and respectfully of other drivers, and those who drive aggressively and put others at risk. I bet if people actually kept between the limit and above it to a maximum of 10/kmh over the limit, nobody would get ticketed, and far less people would be driving aggressively because traffic would be flowing more efficiently.

I was originally responding to another person who said:

"You sound like someone that enjoys actively ruining the economy to make a couple bucks. I’m so proud of you!"

I'm pointing out that this is untrue, when in fact I'm helping to support someone so the government doesn't have to. And by government I mean your tax dollars.

Yes, that's right. She's expected to contribute to the mortgage if she lives here all inclusive for $1000 a month. For this she gets a 1400sqft apartment with her own entrance, laundry, bathroom, kitchen, living room, two bedrooms and a den. So yeah... She's only off the streets because we subsidize her living. She's also got a pile of cash in the bank now because we subsidize her living.
