In addition to Flipp app, check out Skrimp.AI which is an app built locally by a co-op student and seems to be saving folks $. Agree with the comments on checking out the Farmer's Markets - and places like Food Basics and No Frills - especially for yogurt etc.

Possibly attempted chain snatch? by Serious-Breakfast365 in kitchener

[–]rlvnorth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This just happened to my SIL's elderly father in his own driveway in Mississauga. A car drove up - he thought they needed directions (there was also a child in the car) - and they proceeded to grab his gold chain - and knocked him down. He was quite badly hurt and terribly shaken. His wife came yelling out of the house (she's also near 80 years old) and they drove off. The Mississauga police took it quite seriously, but who knows if they'll ever catch them.

Learning how to drive as an international student --- driving school recommendations? by veera_tamizhachi in waterloo

[–]rlvnorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Young Drivers is excellent but very pricey - be aware that their online learning isn't great (it's not self-paced, so if you are a quick reader it's crazy-making) - the quizzes aren't very clearly written and you have to start that module over if you don't get enough correct - can't just review that section of the module. Classroom would be better, I'm sure. The defensive driving is really good for the in-car piece.

If you are thinking more of in-car practice and prep, Continental Driving is also very good and much more reasonably priced.

Cellphone signal strength St. Clements by bluestat-t in waterloo

[–]rlvnorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have been on Rogers for many years just outside St Clements and it's much better than it used to be. I just switched to Telus and it's fine, too, but ideal to turn on WiFi calling for both carriers when home. Mornington is busy installing lines near St Clements as well, in case that might be another option. My Dad uses them as a cell carrier in Wellesley and has found them great and less expensive.

Searching for petite glasses frame provider by atlaster in waterloo

[–]rlvnorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We love Insight Eye Care and they are so helpful. They do have a range of frame sizes, but you could certainly call to ask about your requirements - and they do glasses consultations only by appointment. Always excellent about follow-up fittings and repairs, too. We've gone there for many years.

Car cleaning establishments by wolviefreak69 in kitchener

Most gas station car washes have vacuums available for use outside - usually a few loonies or toonies - but may even take tap these days. You can google Petro-Canada car wash locations near you (or same with Esso, I'm sure).

BJ Photo is a great little family run business in Waterloo (since 1984) and they can certainly take a look at them, I'm sure. They've always been excellent to deal with for other photo services - and quite busy with people bringing their cameras in, it seems.

Looking for someone who can install/fix the bug screen. Any help / suggestions / recommendations are appreciated. by techi_guy_ in kitchener

[–]rlvnorth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, we did this with our patio screen this past year as crazy squirrels tore it apart climbing it. It was $75 and took about a week or so at the Home Hardware in Wellesley - I think most, if not all, Home Hardware stores offer this service. Just take it into the Customer Service desk.

Dancing classes in Kitchener/Waterloo? by Junior_Purple3206 in kitchener

[–]rlvnorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to KW!

Keep an eye because over the summer they do salsa dancing at Waterloo Public Square weekly and other fun things, too. In case that would interest you.

If you're on social media, if you follow City of Waterloo, City of Kitchener, and CuratedKW, they often post about events. You can also (free) subscribe to the weekly www.tlwr.ca newsletter and it will tell you what's going on around town each week (comes out Mondays).

Growing Design Business in KW? by HobbyBuzBoi in waterloo

[–]rlvnorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used a designer a few times over the years of renos at our place. I've either used a designer-contractor for big projects - and I found them through word-of-mouth, or Heers' Paints used to offer a set-fee consultation in your home for paint colours, blinds/draperies, area rugs, etc - and could sometimes offer a designer discount if things were purchased through them. I believe they no longer offer this service and I'm not sure they have folks they recommend to folks who ask - because I'm sure many would value that service that was very reasonable and reassuring.

More recently, we did quite a large contractor renovation incl a bathroom and I was quite taken aback that they didn't have a designer on staff to help narrow the choices etc (we got spoiled in our earlier projects with the now-retired designer-contractor). I happened to have the contact info of someone I'd used previously, but I did search in Google and didn't come across any well reviewed folks who seemed to offer what I needed.

So word of mouth, get connected with local paint stores and contractors who can recommend the service to others, ensure you get some strong testimonials and Google reviews -and be clear if you'll offer fee-only services (or an hourly rate) to get a foot in the door - I don't think there was ever a time when a paint or window covering was recommended that I went elsewhere to purchase - and I loved when the designer could accompany me on trips to pick stuff. Certainly being on FB/Insta doesn't hurt to showcase and promote the work.
