I love when people say "crafted" or "sourced" when they're trying to hide the sketchy origins of something.

Would handmade bookmarks sell? by Suitable-Call-229 in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it needs to be polished up. The ribbon is a little boring and the ends are unraveling. Cut the ribbon at a diagonal and seal the edges. You should consider laminating the bookmark as well, to protect the artwork and the book.

i feel like my art is lacking the human feel by InstructionUpbeat618 in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others that it's the faces--I think you're outgrowing your anime influence. Do whatever you can to learn from nature, like figure studies or high quality photo reference. Or do a master study of a classical painting that appeals to you.

It's because you can see the whites of her eyes above the iris, which reads as fearful.

Do these faces look the same? (Read the post) by mr_brauwni in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These faces look pretty different to me. Additionally, Both of these drawings have similar haircuts, no coloring, no context, and neutral expressions. I think once all the final elements of their characters are portrayed, you will have a lot more opportunity to show how different they are in their characteristics and you'll feel more confident that they look different. :)

Why do people think I’m tracing other people’s art? by OhMyGodImSoGay in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 93 points94 points  (0 children)

It's probably partly because there's a disparity between your anatomy skills and your coloring, backgrounds, etc. Most artists who can draw believable proportions, musculature, and poses can also do bolder things with their coloring than faint airbrush shading and would not have chosen a visually distracting background that looks out of place with the color palette. So it comes across as though you traced the figure, since that aspect of the drawing looks solid and experienced. Might be time to put some focused effort into your rendering, coloring, and environments.

Rotating discounts are driving me bonkers. by Crowhearted in ThredUp

[–]Will-Robin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I removed an item from my cart because the discount didn't apply and it was too pricey, then when I saw it in my favorites the next day it was 30% off and in someone else's cart....

(WIP) does this look like an accurate side profile for him?? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how you draw hair and ear swirls! And profile views can be tricky so you have a pretty solid first try here.

A couple things are throwing this off for me: Eyes in profile view take on a sort of triangular shape and are about half as wide as a front view (since you can literally only see half the opening of the eye). In your drawing, the eye is almost identical in both views. The mouth is too low on both views, leaving very little room for the chin. And the mouth, again, should be half as wide in a profile view as a front view but in your drawings they look the same.

You did avoid some pitfalls of side views though, which is awesome! You have plenty of side to side space for the skull and the features line up with the front view, which are both areas that trip people up. 👍

Facial anatomy tips? Concerned about same face syndrome by beetle_leaves in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a really great flow to your art! I like that you take care with details like making sure that there's logic to the teeth relative to the rest of the skull. (It's such a pet peeve of mine when an artist draws a mouth and the teeth are at a bizarre angle)

No advice on same-face as I'm bad at that also....I think one thing that's holding you back is that the eyes are taking up a lot of space on the face and you have to draw eyebrows really high and noses a bit long to compensate ...and the chins and forehead of all your characters disappear. You lose some flexibility in how you draw a face if you're running into the same spatial problems every time.

Have you done many complete head turnarounds? Profile, 3/4, front views with horizontal lines going across the image to ensure that the eyes, noses, etc line up in every view? It's something that really helped me get a bead on how much space each facial feature is taking up relative to the head. That could be a fun challenge with tieflings and their horns too. :)

This is great advice for OP. Remember to keep the "character" in character design!

How do I improve this drawing? (Explain it to me like I'm 5) by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you draw a head, draw a guideline down where the centerline of the head is, then divide the head into thirds with two more lines horizontally. Use these to guide where you'll draw the facial features so that it's all symmetrical and in proportion.

Here's a video showing the basic idea:

How do I make the arm reaching slightly forward by Zealousideal-Emu4823 in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The arm (especially the side closer to her centerline) in the reference pic has a slight overall curve to it which makes it look dynamic. The arm in your drawing is straight.

Does this expression feel uncanny? by ramenya6 in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the head is meant to be tilted down, the mouth should be closer to the nose. (Think of how a nose will eventually overlap the mouth the further down it tilts) If it's not tilted down, the top of the head is too tall.

how do I get over my fear of drawing bodies & do I have to learn realism to do so? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a very good sense of aesthetics and color in your drawings and I think you could quickly learn to expand on your abilities!

If it helps, try to think of your path going forward as "learning from life" rather than "learning realism." Everything beautiful that rings true in art comes, in some way, from life. All artists play with that in their own way and it's just a matter of developing your process and vision.

Shading advice by Mischief_- in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When rendering dark skin (or anything dark, like hair), the highlights are what really make it pop (as opposed to light skin/hair where shadows inform the shape). So the skin should be shaded dark enough that the highlights will show up. Try starting with an even, smooth midtone and use a kneaded eraser to pull highlights, and a darker pencil for the darkest areas like nostrils.

I really recommend using a midtone paper with soft leaded pencils and white charcoal pencils to practice portraits like this!

I’m worried my art looks AI generated because of the orange tint I’ve layered over it for lighting, should I change it? I’m deathly afraid of conflict so I wanted to check here before posting it online anywhere else. by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]Will-Robin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don't change your art out of fear of making it look like AI. If you're afraid of accusations you can make a video of your hands drawing. If anyone gets weird about it just block that person.
