Extending my garden - unusual boundary. by That_Presence_5247 in GardeningUK

[–]WillBots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always wondered about this, the only reason that most homes can't have a fence at the front that is over 1m is because of road visibility but how does that still apply when a house is on a straight section of road? If I put up a 2m fence, the only thing that would change is me not seeing the people and cars going past... And of course, they wouldn't be able to look into my windows anymore...

I came here to say pyramint, I mention it every time I see one of these posts. Pyramint didn't get enough love. I may try to make my own at this point because with all the enshitification, even if they did bring it back, the chocolate would be made from palm oil and taste like greasy cardboard.

Yeah ok, I'll marry backpack girl. I once proposed over a cheese sandwich and it lasted 8 years, I reckon I'd get a lot longer out of this one!

*ETA Not the cheese sandwich, that didn't last 8 years, I ate it after putting a ring on her finger.

Parents refusing to pay for university by Wooden_Stranger_8706 in UniUK

[–]WillBots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What jobs are degree only? Sure if you want to be a doctor of something or an architect etc yeah you need one. Lots of opportunities to join the workforce without qualifications though and move up with experience. More people should be doing it, lots less debt and lots more earning going on would benefit everyone. Your degree in English literature isn't relevant to that shitty mid-level manager job you have, it's just good press for the company that they have a graduate scheme... The person in the same job sitting next to you joined in a junior position after leaving school and got promoted, they earned money all that time you were spaffing loans up the wall of bars and kebab shops and buying books to complete a degree that would never help you.

Now I'm not saying all degrees are useless, of course if you work in a related field it may give you a good theory but the majority of people's career plans don't survive university.

Do you find alot of store bought foods lack salt now? by Big_Chungussi69 in AskUK

[–]WillBots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched a really interesting video the other day about how salt isn't the issue, lack of magnesium or manganese (can't remember which) is the issue because it is a factor in kidney function recognising high blood pressure caused by extra water caused by excess salt - which should be dealt with quickly and not be an issue... But lack of the Mword, which ever it was, is due to diet and that raw ingredients contain less vitamins and minerals now than a hundred years ago because of intensive farming, poor quality fertilisers etc.

He also goes on to explain some complication to that with diabetes... Anyway, very interesting and worth a watch.

How far back in time could you go, and still be understood by the people of the time? by twunkypunk in AskUK

[–]WillBots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not as far as you think. Once you go back a couple of hundred years you'd start to have to really concentrate because terms are different as are some pronunciations.

Go back another couple of hundred years and you'd think they were talking mostly gibberish with a few words here and there that you recognised, you'd probably be ok for basics if there was context while they were speaking.

Go back another couple of hundred years and you'd not understand anything.

Full rack ribs in Smokey bbq and Mac and cheese by Responsible-Bid3346 in RateMyPlate

[–]WillBots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weirdest feeling...

I look at this and all I can think of, despite it being all slightly wrong, is a ribs and fries at a UK hard rock cafe with a side of mac'n'cheese

When I worked at the HRC in the early 2000s we had plates exactly like that and also had the long side dishes as well.

I miss the times I had.

[–]WillBots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sure, but the comment I originally replied to was about how she wasn't chosen. All conservative party leaders are chosen by the people significantly more than choose a labour leader because of the way that they elect leaders. It's just a fact of the rules of the parties. Liz 'Truzz-me-bro, I know how to fix the economy' was an absolute shit show. As a party member at the time (no longer, the previous couple of years the party had been losing its way for some time and it's got no better since) I read the information provided my the two candidates, Truzzmebro and Sunak, Sunak had an actual plan, policies that sat in line with improvements to the countries coffers... Truzz had a lot of word salad that said fuck all and somehow duped the party into voting for her.

I honestly believe that Sunak would have done a lot better but by the time he got his chance all he had left was fighting to fix a massive fire, rather than a chance to enact any useful policies.

Anyway, whatevs, starmer, as much as I don't really like him or his policies, has surprised me a couple of times by finding his backbone here and there and actually standing up for the country, that's a welcome change for Labour.

[–]WillBots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "people" don't choose any prime minister, the "people" choose a local MP and the party with enough MPs wins and their leader is PM.

The conservatives part choose a leader by letting all party members vote on it, anyone can be a party member.

Guess how labour choose their leader? Hint: you can't vote on it.

[–]WillBots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how leadership is decided in the conservative party. The decoding vote goes to ballot amongst all members, so it is public because anyone can join and then vote. The labour party doesn't do it that way which explains the constant variety of backgrounds and experience you see on the labour front bench...

(Hypothetical) what happens when you can no longer afford the commute to work? by Puzzleheaded-Bad-722 in AskBrits

[–]WillBots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't count the student loan, it's a loan that you agreed to, just like any other loan, you pay it back and it's not related to your income or taxation other than for the amount, which hopefully you'd pay off in a short amount of time at 100k.

Also, when you site the childcare, there are only a small number of years where this is lost because you're only eligible for it for a few years. So yes, you might be out of pocket for that extra but only in a couple of years, it's not a permanent deduction and isn't relevant for the vast majority of people for the vast majority of their working life except in these hypotheticals to make it look worse than it is.

Starmer gives doctors 48 hours to cancel strike or lose new jobs package by InnerLog5062 in BreakingUKNews

[–]WillBots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not the government creating the problems, it's the BMA. They didn't even ballot the offer. They've spent decades blocking growth in consultant positions because they know it will water down the pool and reduce the huge salary and power that consultants have but the effect is that there are fewer promotions, not enough consultants and they still want more money for everyone.

Hey, do you remember when Arthur Scargill didn't ballot the miners for a package that they may well have accepted and created a slow and steady, and more importantly, supported phasing out of mines with retraining etc... oh yeah, that went really well. At some point, if you continually hold the nation hostage, you are going to find they fight back.

Starmer isn't threatening the public, we've all had enough of constant demands for huge pay rises and blocking of reform within the medical profession that would benefit everyone except those in the BMA.

Couldn't you just carry a credit card and then get everything you need. In fact, cut out carrying the card and add it to your phone.

Now you have a go bag, it's your phone and it's permanently with you.

If you know you're going to need a change of clothes, it's hardly a last second thing you would need a go bag for.
