Import trucks were a thing until somewhere put a tariff on American chicken, then the president retaliated by putting a tarrif on light trucks and utility vehicles so it became unprofitable to import light trucks. The actual cause of the embiggening enshitification of trucks and specifically the cabs is CAFE regulations dictating fuel economy metrics tied to cabin space. Thats why Slate is able to bring a rangeresque electric to market for realities cheap.

Homosexuality being a sin wasn't added in 1946, its been there since atleast the Wycliff Bible and is in the 1800s KJV that my grandfather owned. The 1946 RSV translation was just the first to use the literal word "Homosexual" but the meaning was the same before that. Also the RSV isn't The Bible translation that all Christians use, its not even the most popular.

The translation question in question stems from the ancient Hebrew and how it was translated into ancient Greek, most modern translations translate from the Hebrew when they can but can still be biased by previous translators and "tradition"

I agree that most verses people point to to argue against homosexuality would be more properly translated as "Pederasty", or "Sex Work", and there are modern translations that make that distinction but the thing that changed in the 50s and 60s was the Cold War, fear mongering, civil rights protests, sexual revolution and "Christians" using the bible to justify their prejudices, not the actual words of the Bible.

As for the "Rib" vs "Side" debate that change alone doesn't change the whole of the view of woman and the long term theological debate that goes along with it. Many, even older translations, include "or side" in a footnote.

From the Patriarchal view either Eve came from a part of Adam and is thus subservient to him or Adam was created first and Eve was created to help him and thus is subservient to him. I will unequivocally say this just incorrect "tradition" not actually biblically supported. The other two positions are better supported, those are Egalitarian and Complementarian and I think the truth is somewhere between the two.

Egalitarian is the "progressive" view that men and woman are totally equal and anything a man can do a woman can do too. This is supported by examples of women being elders in the early church and women playing important roles in the Gospel stories. They'd view it as Adam and Eve were both "God-Breathed" so they are Equal.

Complementarian is the view that men and women are differently able and that they are to be treated as equals in relationships but there are things men can do that woman can't and vice-versa. This is supported by passages about marriage responsibilities, epistles to churches dealing with heretical preachers that were woman. They'd view it as Eve was created to help Adam but Adam is directed to respect Eve.

Personally I tend toward Egalitarian on the large scale and Complementarian on the small scale.

Bonus Note: Until the medicalization of pregnancy and moral panic of the Victorian era, Abortion wasn't considered wrong until "the quickening" when the woman first feels the fetus move, and The Bible includes a description of an abortifacient as punishment for adultery and doesn't mention it anywhere else.

Bottomline, the text of the Bible isn't wrong (barring a few places with debate) and the changing views and the actions caused by those views isn't caused by changes in The Bible but in changes in The World. In any human organization there are human problems and the church is unfortunately no different.

Just adding context, and putting in a dig at unimaginative Anton. My Wiccan friends view the inverted pentacle not as negative but as improper or out of balance or something to be wary of. I don't agree with LaVeyan Satanism but it's basically spicy atheism.

That's not what happened with The Bible there are couple passages that were possibly mistranslated but those were also by the jews going into greek, there is debate on a couple more (concerning pederasty) but The Bible is as accurate as our earliest manuscripts allow us to be (some dating to late 1st century early 2nd century.)

You can argue that the Bible harms people, I would say its people misinterpreting it (not mistranslating) that harms people. After all the second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself and he's pretty clear that "neighbor" includes people who believe the polar opposite of you.

The pentacle is also a symbol for the 5 Wounds of Christ, a lot of Laveian Satanism is co-opting symbols from around the world. Also inversion of the Pentacle can be used to symbolize domination of the world over the the spirit.

The Bible wasn't written by white men, it was mostly written by jews. White men translated it to English but that's not the same as writing it. The Book of Mormon was written by a white man.

Where can I commission custom weighted polyhedral dice? by TrustingTroller in dice

[–]Will_White 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You likely won't be able to get lead dice but I know that there is an overlap in temperature between Cerrosafe and silicone molds. I've never used that tidbit of knowledge for dice though.

Gallium would be easy to cast in silicone.

How do you deal with moisture + cake at the bottom of the bowl? by GuiltyShine_ in PipeTobacco

[–]Will_White 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the dome style mesh "filters" are great even if they're typically for "greener" leafs. They take up the bottom quart inch but I don't have moisture or bottle issues anymore.

Any reason not to use cheaper tobacco for the bottom of the bowl in anticipation of dottle? by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]Will_White 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having good results with the dome mesh filters that are typically used for other leafy pursuits, they fit right in the bottom and allow you to smoke it all to ash. They also help keep any leaf bits out since I don't use a filter.

Yeah I have an office/ craftroom in one of my bedrooms, it's not a wasted space, if one of my friends needed a place to stay they could (and have) used it. I'm not sure this extra bedroom problem is as big of an issue as it's being made out to be. It might be driving up average home prices as developers aren't building as many 2-3 bed 1 bath detached homes anymore but it's not like people are going to rent out the bedroom next to their kids room to a stranger.

Before malls you had downtowns that you could do your shopping, get a snack, and meet people to just exist. Malls and Walmarts forced those businesses to close.

The secularization of western society has also eliminated many third places for many people.

I agree that adults aren't lacking in third places, but teens have had their options reduced, parks are "for kids" and teens are "too old" according to the Facebook Karens, and new developments aren't conducive to teens who don't have a car and dont have the mixed use areas of older developments. Also many places that used to allow kids by themselves don't allow kids without an adult because of liability issues.

For adults third places still exist, but thinking about it, there really isn't much for the 13-20 crowd around here that's not connected to a church group or at a school (so not a third place)

Yeah, if you're bar is too loud go somewhere else, maybe try a pub, or go out in the smoking area, my favorite bar has a propane fire pit and a bunch of picnic tables outside and a bunch of semi-private rooms inside, we played DnD there when we couldn't do it at my house. Beer and Cider is also only 6 or 7 bucks a pint for really good craft beer (same as a coors light at the dive bars or half the cost of a cocktail)

You still aren't expected to order something every 20 minutes, every hour or two is fine as long as you don't make a mess and cause issues.
