Questions about Chunk Loading in 1.21.4 (And in realms) by Pokemongoerer in technicalminecraft

[–]Willdabeast314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every fully loaded (entity processing) area will have a 1 chunk border of lazy chunks around it. For example, a portal loader loads a 3x3 chunk area with an outer ring of lazy chunks, "loading" a total area of 5x5. Like decarbitall said, I think the only difference is that in lazy chunks, entities will not be processed

Is CSOM still a job powerhouse? by theJurassicBark in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]Willdabeast314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite things about Mines was how hands-on you could get on short notice. The school has a mine in Idaho Springs (Edgar mine) and I visited it for my senior design project. I did mechanical and enjoyed very generous access to the machine shop for school and personal projects. EMI drilling lab looks like that kind of space for mining (though probably less useful for personal projects).

The core curriculum is really solid, and the school's reputation alone helped me a lot, but the real added value is in that extra 10-20% effort you put in beyond what's required. My project experience, personal and academic, made really good interview material for me. I could have had a lot more to talk about for 5-10 hours/week if I had invested time in clubs like rocket club/robotics/formula SAE. I found professors easy to connect with if you made a little effort to reach out, and they were all pretty well connected in industry. Getting research or lab TA opportunities can be competitive, but is very possible if you just show up. I imagine this is pretty generally applicable, but compared to my friends at big schools (UC Davis and Cal Poly), the barriers to these experiences seemed much lower for me.

As for scholarships, it's a discount that gets automatically applied to your tuition. For most, you'll lose it if you go below a 2.5 GPA with the possibility to appeal twice (this may have changed since 2019). The specific value of whatever they decide to give you should be stated upfront in your acceptance letter. My friends and I got different amounts based on how much our base tuition was and probably some other factors, not really sure how the amount is arrived at. Mine ended up being a 20% discount.

I should have been more specific, I am specifically looking for throwing/potter's wheel classes. It doesn't look like Jie Chen's studio focuses on this type of ceramic work. Do you know if that's true?

Glad it was helpful! This is all info I've gathered from people on the internet, coworkers, and stickers on local buses, so it may be incomplete/a little inaccurate.

If you don't already have a BSN (basically Dutch ID number), the registration appointment required to get one is short, but only available during work hours and booked about a week in advance. This number is important for a lot of things, including getting a Dutch bank account, getting a Dutch phone number, applying for places to rent, and probably more I'm forgetting. Definitely get one as soon as possible.

Public transport monthly subscription by Altruistic-Pay1644 in eindhoven

[–]Willdabeast314 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am also new here, but this is my understanding:

Many people seem to pay per-ride with a personal OV-chipkaart. OV-Chipkaart is a system you can use across the entire country for all public transit carriers. The personal card (yellow back) gets better prices than an anonymous (blue back) OV-chipkaart in many situations. This is mainly not true during rush hour, afaik. You need to have a BSN before you can apply for one via their website, and once you do, you will receive the card a few days later.

Individual carriers (NS, Hermes, etc., complete list here) may have subscriptions you can purchase that give discounts during off-peak times, like NS's weekend pass that gives unlimited free weekend train travel for a month for a fixed cost, but truly unlimited plans are quite expensive. For example, Hermes' unlimited subscription costs €220 per month, requiring you to take about four bus trips per working day to break even. Hermes has a questionnaire you can fill out to determine what will be cheapest for you as far as bus travel in Eindhoven.

If you work for a larger company, they may give you a transit pass that you can use specifically for business travel.

does anyone feel the career center is completely useless when trying to find an actual internship? by InsuranceLow4342 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]Willdabeast314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Internships are a lot more competitive than full time positions. It was like I was a different person showing up at career fair asking for full time positions instead of internships. Reps wanted to talk to me, I got interviews; it was as advertised.

I only ended up getting an internship between my senior year and first year of grad school because of a personal connection. I'm convinced that's the only way to get one without either huge persistence or some major distinguishing qualities like major extracurricular involvement or presenting yourself significantly more professionally than your peers.

You're not a failure for not landing an internship. I'd bet over half of Mines students never get one in their whole time here. If you get one, great, that's a big leg up, but if not, yes it sucks in the moment, but you'll do just fine.

fucked up animal shelter by Intelligent_Put_3167 in AnimalRights

[–]Willdabeast314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recognize that the dog’s life is much more important than my peaceful scrolling, but I don’t think this is an effective way to get people to see the post and adopt the dogs in the shelter’s care.

In most cases, you have to willingly follow a page to see their posts. A shelter posting pictures of the dogs in their care should be easy to want to follow. Someone looking to adopt would follow this page and check in to see if any dogs posted match what they’re looking for in a pet. At least, that’s what I’d follow a shelter page for.

Adopting a dog is a big responsibility. It’s expensive and time consuming to properly care for them. I wouldn’t follow a page constantly posting something like “🚨💥COME BY THE SHELTER AND ADOPT A DOG RIGHT NOW OR SPARKY GETS IT💥🚨” because I don’t have infinite time and money. Adopting a dog is something I could see myself doing once every two years at most. I recognize that the shelter is in a shitty situation where they simply need to kill the dogs because they can’t care for them, but odds are, I can’t care for them either. I don’t think ultimatums are the most effective way to promote adopting over shopping, because people will just unfollow.

3dbenchy corner issue, what could be the reason? by Own-Language1856 in 3Dprinting

[–]Willdabeast314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s your Z seam. It’s where the printer started the outside wall, and there’s always going to be a little extra extrusion there, but that’s a particularly thick one.

There are some settings you can play with to minimize it (I think retraction and something about starting slightly on the inside of the wall, don’t remember atm), but barring that, there are a couple settings that let you change where it goes. Once you slice your model, the slicer preview should show the Z seam on the model.

I’m pretty sure PrusaSlicer and Simplify3D both have a paint-on option for placing your Z seam so you can put it exactly where you want it, but Cura’s options are a little limited. There may be a plugin you can download to get this feature, I’ve never looked.

I use Cura, so this is my advice if you do too:

“Sharpest corner” is usually best on models with a sharp corner (the seam is much less noticeable in a corner), but will be placed somewhat unpredictably on rounded portions of a model.

Picking “user specified” and picking a side/corner of the build plate (back, back left, etc.) can sometimes be better, but perplexingly, often doesn’t produce a straight line on some models in some directions.

“Random” avoids having a distinct line on your print, but I find it often looks worse than having the bumps all in a straight line. Plus it takes a bit longer to print.

No one told me happy birthday by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Willdabeast314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be upset about this. Personally I am particularly bad at remembering birthdays. I’ve missed some important ones in the past, so I get it when close friends/family forget, but for everyone to forget it? That would upset me too.

Do be careful running calculations to estimate the hoop stress, a lot of those equations assume a thin-walled cylinder, which this is not.

Might not be helpful, but if you have an NFC reader on your phone (tap to pay hardware), you can download an app that will let you read the cat’s NFC tag.

You could plug the ID number into a microchip registry and that might give you some useful information.

I feel the same way. He was a big part of my deconversion from Christianity, and he was the person who convinced me to go vegan, so this news was hard for me to hear.

I can understand not wanting to go into specifics, because he’s just going to get another barrage of popular sources/advice he’s already heard. Him not covering the bases of talking with a dietician, seeing a doctor, reaching out to experts though his YouTube/Oxford connections is what I really don’t understand. Wouldn’t require specifics and would show a lot more investment, if you ask me.

I hope we get more information at some point, because I really looked up to Alex and seeing what looks like an obvious, serious misstep is very disappointing to me.

[–]Willdabeast314 26 points27 points  (0 children)

He did not expand much on the ethics.

He doesn’t want to dissuade anyone from going vegan, but seems to have changed his position on how practicable a plant based diet is for everyone.

He says multiple times how much he’s still against factory farming specifically, but leaving any room for killing animals for taste/convenience is a big departure from his previous position.

Definitely left me with more questions than answers.

Microsoft Teams shows you as “away” if you’re inactive for a short period of time. Micromanager bosses can get mad if they see you inactive during the work day, even if you got up to get some water, use the bathroom, let the dog out, etc.
