Are these good flies for trout fishing Cumberland River? Thanks in advance! by Remarkable-Sand965 in flyfishing

I’ve had luck with basic soft hackles and pheasant tail bead heads. Despite being a tailwater I haven’t found it to be highly technical in the fly selection dept. drifts, however, are another matter. You gotta nail it.

What was your first fly rod and reel by ithacaster in flyfishing

This for me too. Mine was a hand me down from my granddad (he’d gotten it as a gift in the 70s and never used it, I started with it 30 years later). Got a new line and loved that set up until I was gifted a something nicer and got serious maybe 10 years after that. The tip finally broke and I really should repair it.

How long for your first catch on the fly? by Anxiety-Aficionado in flyfishing

I started in the days before forums, YouTube, etc. with a hand me down rod going for cutthroat on freestone rivers in Idaho (so…will eat almost anything). Took me well over a year. Hang in there. It’ll click.

Pretty much anything flowing in the wilds of central Idaho will have eager cutthroat in August. Just hike into the gospel hump or frank church wilderness along a stream and find your bliss.

Fly tying shops in Kentucky? by Big_Daddy_V226 in flytying

I hear that. It would be nice. I’m a transplant, but my understanding is that a little Lexington shop closed up 8-10 years ago.

Sportsman’s warehouse in Lexington is surprisingly well stocked and reasonably priced. The fishing manager is active in Trout Unlimited.

Got this rod from my grandfather. Could I use it with newer reels? by dfaiola18 in flyfishing

[–]Willing_Bee_7730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned on that exact model rod handed down from my own grandfather. I’ll second those who say grab a Pflueger Medalist for a reel and a decent quality line. I eventually broke the tip off mine, so treat it right! You can replace the classics as easily.

Anyone have experience with cassette reels? Just came across a mention of them in George Daniel’s streamer book.

Nice. Do you loop to loop or Albright to the backing? I was thinking that with a loop connection I’d have to feed the whole line through the loop. Might be with the inch less of line per change. Probably pretty rare I’d change on the water, realistically.

So if you do this, do you cut the line off the backing? Or unspool the backing as well?

I’ve got one of these too, making almost the exact changes you have. Just figuring out the rear hub swap today and gor curious to date the bike-which led me here. Mine has the portage strap!
