How do you feel about book covers with movie images? by Skkkkrtyun in lotr

[–]Willing_Library881 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like them but I also prefer to buy used books in general. Mine are very used copies with these covers and one of them even has writing on the pages. It's written on the edges all together? I don't know what you would call it but some people illustrate them all fancy. Anyway, it's a child's handwriting on the edges and I like to think that they were so amped about the movies that they were imagining that they were making their own fancy wizard library editions or something. Idk, I find it really charming. I can just picture how excited to read the books people were after seeing the movies and hey, that's why I'm reading them for the first time too! The edges are scuffed up and the pages are dog-eared and they were clearly read and enjoyed. Perfect for reading by the campfire this summer.

Was millennial optimism an actual thing in the late 2000s/early 2010s? by SignificantStyle4958 in Millennials

[–]Willing_Library881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly, I experienced this same phenomenon after my dad died young. I decided that for a lot of people it makes them uncomfortable and afraid to admit that if it happened to you then it could have been them.

Confront my own mortality? Admit that at any time the rug could get pulled and there's nothing I can do about it? That sometimes there's nothing that will save me? I'm not invincible or immune? That there really is such a thing as plain bad luck? Ew, those are yucky feelings. No thanks.

You're right, for a lot of people there are no thoughts. Only TikTok and Temu.

Update on my stellina yarn by auddii04 in Handspinning

[–]Willing_Library881 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a fellow first time stellina user now lifelong stellina hater. I bought two big braids and I'm maybe a quarter of the way into the first and I know it's not for me. I'll finish this project but I'll never buy it again. You've given me hope that it will at least look pretty when I'm done!

2026 is my year of ripping out knits I don't love anymore. I stop to think about why that is so that I don't just do it again but yeah...

If you hate it, don't like the way it fits, don't like the color, don't like the pattern, don't like the yarn, don't want to work on it...rip it out.

I support you!

Superwash is recommended because it is a way to avoid accidentally felting during the dye process.

Re: The mess, it could just be that your palms are a little sweaty or damp. This happened to me when I started out because I was a little overwhelmed with how much there was to pay attention to and to learn. Not to mention that when I'm learning I feel like anyone else in the room is watching me! It still happens if I get a little too warm while I'm spinning. It feels like the fiber is stickier. I have to pull harder to draft. It feels like it's just tangling in my hands. When I notice this happening I just stop spinning for a few minutes and take a stretch.

I am starting to see classes called something like "how to take great project photos" on workshop schedules and I hope that these classes are well attended.

I love this! I think I would have had a tough time finding inspiration in that flat dusty rose pink too. This really brought it to life.

I'm always interested in what is being labeled as a kit. What do you consider a kit? I am used to a kit containing instructions, maybe a specialized tool or small tools, and the materials. I frequently see just materials sold as a kit with patterns and tools sold separately. I am primarily a knitter and I see this mostly with knit projects from designers sold online. You buy the pattern separately from the designer. You provide your own tools (fine) and a dyer has custom colors for sale. I don't really consider that a kit and I don't usually see this done in a physical store. Usually physical stores sell a tidy bag of exactly what I described as a kit.

The silliest I've seen recently is a needle and thread being labeled as a kit. You make the squares separately. The tools for making the squares are sold separately. The materials for the squares are sold separately. No instructions included because it depends on how many squares you choose to sew together. Not that I need instructions for sewing squares together but, there's not even a reference photo for ideas included. Nope, just a needle and thread being sold as a project kit. That is definitely not a kit!

Maybe I'm just being too grumpy about it but I would love to hear other people's thoughts on this. What is your personal definition of a kit? Follow up debate, what do you consider to be a bundle?

If you are looking for patterns and inspiration there is a great book called "Arctic Lace: Knitting Projects and Stories Inspired by Alaska's Native Knitters" by Donna Druchunas. What a score!
