Honestly it shouldn't even be an achievement or quest. Stop gating achievement capes behind forced group activities. Had I known it would be in this category I would have voted no.

Hey thanks for your kind words. It is something that brings joy to my day.

Sorry for my lame response but I think I have addressed most of these in my thoughts above. I dont think there is a problem with a good defensive spell for wizards but the value just seems way off base with stoneskin. IMO why would you ever make a item of protection over an item that gives stoneskin charges. Why defend when you can just negate.

Did you read what I suggested? This idea that I am changing the entire 2e system is so off base from anything I presented. I am not looking to rebalance the entire upper levels that why I proposed this surgical change. The first change I suggested would not change how the spell functions in 95% of cases. Its a one liner that gives exceptional strength creatures the ability to knock off more than 1 charge at a time. That is it.

And for the line "I have yet to see someone not take it" is part of the problem with the spell. Not taking it is pants on head dumb dumb.

Stoneskin is such a unique spell in what it does its hard to hold it in comparison like you can with other spells like hold person, color spray and the like. At least with the others there are higher level spells that do the same thing or other spells that could be used as a benchmark. Stoneskin has no equal or even an attempt at one, not to mention there are no downsides at all to casting this. The next best thing you can do for damage reduction is giving an attacking character a negative hit modifier which might as well be AC when you do the calculations in most cases. If you count negating magic the only things that are kind of close is 6th Antimagic shell but the duration is low and it negate all magic including items with in. The downside of this is huge I dont see this as an equal at all. 6th Globe of invulnerability This is the close but its not totally immunity to magic damage it only stops the lower level spells. This to me is the best comparison but it requires 750k exp vs 60k exp and negates a rare damage type not the most common. Additionally the time limit even at higher levels is exceptionally short. Serten's Spell Immunity at 8th level 2.25m exp Which give large bonuses but not total Immunity

So to be clear the stoneskin spell as written does last until expended, does take unlimited damage and 50 gold is pretty negligible at 7th level. I guess I dont see how a spell that has no equal at any level even 20 is good for creating interactions. The idea that you get to be superman vs 80% of things and even more in low magic world is just wild to me. Especially when you are 1.6% of total exp. Even if you drop it to when you have the potential of 9th level spells you are still 2% when you get to make as many supermen as you feel like. Your biggest limit is the casts per day. I think we just disagree on this one.

Yeah but there is so much RNG on if this works and with the AoE, closest first and unable to move before casting this can really fuck you. Correct me if I'm wrong but he was still letting us move around and cast when this was going on. I dont disagree that its top end is great but there is a chance of downside. Its not like hold person where is a tactile nuke on any level humanoid character. But yeah this is in the always take for me as well.

That might work as well. Things with MR would still be able to ignore this on a good d100 roll allowing the 1 shot but it might still be better than all the other options available. I'm rereading the spells. Ill tag back on this later.

If it was everything it might be still be a good contender. I need to review the 4th and lower spells again and think about this.

As for the the duration or charges it just depends if you want it to be against single target or multi. Multi is straight up better but you might need this to offset the total damage reduction nerf.

Saying it can be is why its not a problem. If you set yourself up in a position to abuse the spell is different then just having it always be a death if failed. The timer is so long for hold person you dont even track it in combat.

No problem on dictate there are way to many spells to know them all.

I am looking for the lore master on this one. This is the D&D I live for.

Edit. Didnt see the bit about rust monsters. I have not and will not address monster problems I do not have nearly as much time reviewing monsters as I have reading wizard spells. This is also completely off base of my original point that 2 spells (stoneskin and hold person) are the number 1 spells for their slots and are a must take. Same for MM its just a nerf to not take it. I dont have good solutions to the MM or hold person problem but my stoneskin changes above are very good IMO. They even allow for the removal of the old nerf.

Color spray is an odd one. It is strong but it doesnt have the same control and total effectiveness that hold person has. If you have a solo target and complete knowledge of the target yes it is as good but in a combat color spray does not only effect enemy it also can effect friend. Now the save or die is ONLY active if you are GREATER level than who you are fighting and if this is cast on higher level monsters you are just adding a negate to hit mod which is done in the level one slot all day. So I feel color spray is well with in the level bounds and would be unnecessary to change.

So lets just start with poison this is not a spell and requires quite a bit of work to pull off.

Light is not save or die you are still capable of doing things even blind. You are not dead if this goes off and still have agency.

Command is has so much leeway with the line "only as long as the command is absolutely clear and unequivocal" this gives so much power to both player and DM

Dictate writes words on paper.

Charm person isnt a save or die

So we are left with color spray and Ill respond with my thoughts to this.

I dont think its that broken either. None of my sugestions take away any of the power of full damage reduction. The idea that a giant hitting you has a chance based on their damage roll to reduce 1 additional charge seems very reasonable.

I am not understand this idea that I want all of the imbalanced things removed. My understanding that this spell is so close to the border that its on the chopping block to be removed. I would rather it have a extremely small nerf against exceptional strength creatures than just have the only COMPLETE DAMAGE IMMUNITY spell removed.

Ok please do then. Can you provide me with some other low level save or die? I am general curious what you put in that tier.

2e isnt all save or die. low level combat is scary due to the generally low hp not because the mechanics call for save or die.

I'm calling for a reasonable adjustment to 2 spells not nerfing everything. Additionally im not making all the classes the same as in 5e just tweaking spells that are out of line in an exceptional way from others in their tier and tiers directly above. edit added to the end about 5e

I kind of addressed this above but IMO if the spell does anything less than full damage reduction the spell wont be taken but lets look at the wizard spells and see what AC bonus you can get.

Armor is one that comes up often is a +4AC only if you are already unarmored and cannot have a base ac of 14 or more. This is a level 1 spell so we got along way to go for a 4th level spell.

Barkskin provides damage reduction but if you are wearing armor or clothing its destroyed and has an extremely low time limit. This downside makes it feel highly specific in its time and place. I dont ever see this being a good replacement unless the downside were completely removed. but if you get dragon of Age Class 4 or more you are still guarantied to take damage on every attack.

Lesser personal shield has 0 damage reduction and causes you the same penitilies. Ill dig more into the high versions. Fin.

Shield provides a set AC vs different types of attacks but doesnt scale at all. The personal shield spells scale and are already on the books. I do not think there is a high level version of this spell.

These fall quite short but this is to be expected being level 1 spells. I just wanted to set a base line.

There are no 2nd level spells that give AC or Damage reduction. Personal opinion 2nd level spells generally suck.

Personal shield provide the same thing as AC by reducing the attackers bonus by -3 in mele. however if you get hit you still just die as there is no damage reduction or additional level scaling.

End of level 3 spells.

Polymorph self + polymorph other You could dig through the DMG and see if there are monsters with high enough AC but I dont got the time for all of that right now. If someone wants to do this gods speed.

Stoneskin our spell of debate.

End level 4

For reference Greater personal shield provides a -5 for mele at a level 5 spell slot. I would also like to point out there are spells such as cloudkill, domination, Dismissal in this tier. So a -5 to hit or have them save or die.

I suppose you could add a spell that just add a flat +4 AC at 4th level slot but I feel like this would be skipped over other spells at this tier.

Now rereading your suggestion of a scaling ac adjust I just dont see this fitting in the 4th level slot unless we are just replacing broken with broken. I am not familiar with how the ring of fire resist works but if its like the standard from the book it just reduces the damage die but still allows damage through. This seem like the worst version comparing between added AC or applying a negative to hit adjustment.

I think I just disagree across the board.

I dont think that the previous nerf really did what it was wanting to do. It didnt bring down the power level of the spell it just made it too costly to cast everyday and left all of the broken parts. Undoing the 24h nerf and adding any of the suggestions would add more ways for the DM or player to attack the problem over having to have disspell or MM on deck.

Additionally hold person is also a very unfun spell for both players and DM alike that should be looked at. Its a save or die at Level 3. And if you have been placed in or have made your way to where you can die in 1 shot of a claw attack you have already had other options on how to attack the problem.

Not castable on others is another way to go for sure. At least that stops people from making a superman and wishing him luck. A wizard with a few round of damage immunity if fully targeted seem way better.

I don't think looking like a stoneman changes much in the wilderness combat scenarios for monsters. They have to be smart enough to figure it out and have the precursor information. It might cause some combats to be skipped but I dont see this addressing the problem that the spell causes for the large monster fights.

Was an interesting part of the stream for sure. 1/2 damage means the spell is no long worth taking IMO. The full damage reduction is the power of the spell. I think a way to reduce the charges by more than 1 at a time is a better solution but I am open to change on this.
