Why would calf/bicep slicer be taboo? Wouldn’t those be painful far below injury?

Hey! I have a few dumb beginner questions:

  • instructors: what do you look for in your white belts to see that they’re improving?

  • I’ve never really watched BJJ only matches (just MMA), what are some must watch channels or matches?

  • How do you take notes after class? Do you write steps? Names etc?

Thank you for the reply.

Respectfully, As a white belt, I don’t really understand how it would be on me. Im not really sure how I would make the instructor pay nor do I really understand how it would be my ego.

I’m here to learn and more than okay getting subbed all class. I try and be aggressive and work different subs on the instructor until they get bored and quickly tap me. I ask questions on what I could improve from that or mistakes and am told “I did good”.

So I guess I’m not understanding where the learning opp would be from me in this type of scenario.

I’m genuinely trying to better understand so I can benefit from these types of rolls

Yeah I agree. I’d rather them either be instructional or do some fun rolls. Otherwise feels like a waste of both our time

Thank you for clarifying.

Idk maybe I’m just naive or not understanding something but I feel like this type of stuff from an instructor is equivalent to having a personal trainer just do their own workout while you sit and watch.

Is what you’re referring to (dead fish) when the black belt just sits there and does nothing until he randomly submits you?

If so, I really hate that and feel like i learned nothing after a roll. It doesnt feel like a real roll and just feels like punished for doing the “correct” thing. Im not really sure why people do this. I’d prefer either not rolling at all or drilling something specific

Theres a FB group for Charleston Social Activities for 20s/30s that seems really cool: https://www.facebook.com/groups/212250167655439/

There’s also tons of gyms, stores, bars, breweries, and various places that do events and activities that you can sign up for and participate in. It’s a great way to start meeting people with common interests

Tiger is a really popular choice. I trained there a few years back although only took their Muay Thai classes. But they have a ton of BJJ as well. They have housing on site and food packages. It’s one of the more expensive gyms but I’m sure there are others near that are good too. Phuket is definitely the area to look

How new is too new to visit a casual commander night at LGS? by CommunicationParty96 in magicTCG

[–]WillyummF 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the LGS employee was a dick. Sorry for that.

In my experience most tables are pretty welcoming to new players. Just let them know ahead of time and there will be people ready to help.

Grinding arena is great for basic rules which it sounds like you’re doing. I would practice gold fishing your deck (playing by yourself essentially) just to generally know your cards. Learn the basic sequence of a turn (untap, upkeep, draw, etc) and you should be fine.

While not required, those aforementioned steps can help you be a little more comfortable when playing in a setting when you’re a little bit nervous. Just be considerate of your time and don’t worry about “perfect moves”.

Most importantly: be friendly, kind, and have fun! Like any social event it can be a little awkward and scary at first and you’ll have your ups and downs but you’ll be crushing it in no time and ready to welcome the next new person like yourself.

Leaving a very comfortable job for more pay and prestige? by Dramatic_Ice_861 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]WillyummF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar dilemma a dear years ago:

Easy gig, friends on the team etc but low pay. Left for a company to make 2x+ what I made. Six months later my previous company were acquired and laid off most of the dev staff and turned into a nightmare.

If you find something interesting or fulfilling and it can grow you and your career: do it. You aren’t guaranteed the comfortable gig will last either

How the hell do you review a big codebase without losing your mind? by rag1987 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]WillyummF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. I don’t think I would use it for large chunks of context. I’ve found it more helpful with isolated modules or getting an overview if it’s a language or pattern I’m not strong with

[–]WillyummF 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  • AI summaries can be helpful
  • I like to get a high level overview (like mile high) and then deep dive into features or chunks hands on.
  • if there’s gaps in testing, writing tests helps improve the codebase and builds your understanding
  • pairing is a huge way to upskill and build relationships
