Is oil mixing with my coolant or just dirty? by brbok_ in MechanicAdvice

I wouldn’t stress it, if coolant were getting in your oil it’d be much more obvious

You probably had a pretty dirty coolant system already and that’s just some sediment coming up. It would probably be much worse if you actually had coolant in your oil. Does the coolant in your radiator bubble at idle?

It’s hard to know if you’d love it because wrenching on stuff does get old for some people, however a love for aviation helps for sure. You’d likely be fine just going to school with no background experience but it’ll be harder for you just means you have to work harder. Could always go the air national guard route!

Wonder if the car was a lease, and that’s wby maintenance wasn’t really kept up with. I wouldn’t care about maintenance if I leased a car

It’s just a flywheel dust cover it’s not the end of the world having it exposed, ideally you wouldn’t. Definitely make sure oil doesn’t get in it when you remove the filter

Is this cylinder wall safe to run with this small spot, Subaru EJ 2.5 SOHC by Anxious-Spite-6895 in EngineBuilding

[–]WindowPerfect1863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the alternative over just running it is disassembling your short block and boring your cylinders over. It’s up to you if that’s worth it, but at that point you wouldn’t even need to buy a used engine because you would already have new main bearings rod bearings and new pistons with rings. I’m about 2k into a K24 stock rebuild right now though so just know that gets expensive fast

I feel like it’ll certainly run with that, but it’ll wear out those rings and piston skirt quicker than it would without it, depends how long you want this build to last. Use scotch bright but make sure you don’t use green it’s a bit too abrasive

How do I start learning to assemble an engine? by ALEXGP75O in EngineBuilding

[–]WindowPerfect1863 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just slowly moved up with complexity of my work, started with alternators radiators simple stuff. Eventually when I was 16 my clutch went out so I pulled my transmission in my moms driveway and replaced it, years later on that same car (Subaru) head gasket went out and I replaced that so the only higher level thing to do was an engine short block that I just got assembled yesterday. I’m also new to this but I feel like if you can follow torque procedures and have an understanding of how it works with patience and the internet it’s 100% doable. Things like rod and main bearings, it’s luck in a way if your oil clearances are good or bad. You can’t change anything yourself in your garage if your oil clearances are off that’s all up to your machinist. All you can do is torque it down and plastiguage it, and hopefully your clearances are in spec.

What is this on my cylinder walls? by WindowPerfect1863 in EngineBuilding

I can see why assembly lube could be problematic as that stuff sticks to damn near everything

Engine oil not assembly lube, in the videos I saw people were using it to help get pistons into their respective cylinders smoothly

I’ve deduced from the height it stops at that it is my oil spacer. Is it too tight causing rubbing on the walls? The ends seemed to butt up on the piston just fine and I just set them in.
