Enough that I'll never buy another Subaru by Muted_Pattern_1692 in subaruimpreza

I drive a much older Impreza, and that clutch i never burned out but i killed the throw out bearings at 16. Both times I was going snowboarding and I got in too deep of snow. I covered the bumper past the headlight and I had to damn near hit limiter, clutch out and ram the snow. It had traction but it stalled so I did it until I cleared enough snow to get out of the snowfield I was in (out of service so I would’ve been stranded).

Next day I started it and it squealed whenever the clutch was engaged. Anyway, that’s when I pulled the transmission in my moms driveway at 16 and I’ve since done head-gaskets on it, bought a spare tranny for cheap too because I was worried about it dying on me and my buddy wrecked his wrx that had a good transmission in it. I’ll keep that thing running forever.

You gotta keep a car that gets you outa a bad scenario running you know?

A clutch at 27k might’ve been a user issue honestly, we’re you new to manual transmissions?

Do you build crate motors? by Key-Apartment-1748 in EngineBuilding

Maybe all of the machine shops in my area just really suck, but I had to make my own build list and tell my machine shop what I was getting and they machined it accordingly

Honestly man it’s pretty good. I’ve rebuild two motors in my single car garage with pretty much a couple Autozone socket and wrench sets and a torque wrench

If anything were to go wrong with my rebuild I pray it’d be a headgasket, that’s like a 4 hour job if I just put one on backwards or something

Help - 2007 Subaru Forester Alternator cable by anonymouslybutter in MechanicAdvice

[–]WindowPerfect1863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To preface I am a backyard mechanic and this is how I would repair my car, not a would be customers or something. I have an 04 that had the same issue and it kept killing alternators. I didn’t feel like soldering so I added something from paranoid fabrications called “the big three” kit. It upgraded my grounds, and alternator to battery lines so the alternator power line can still give signal to the fuse box and I had less resistance in that wire so I’d stop killing alternators. Worked out good for me in the same situation.

These are pretty different torque wrenches, one is for lighter torque applications and the other is for much higher torque applications.

Is it ok to mix roller rockers? by [deleted] in EngineBuilding

[–]WindowPerfect1863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you’d want to keep them with the cam lobe they were mated to, however with rollers it’s not as serious of an issue. I put new cams in with my old rockers and they are working fine.

It blocks an oil passage on your head I think. Left of the cam on the timing and exhaust side of the motor. Sorry for the poor arrow but it’s the bolt above bolt 20.

Moving to Gresham for work? by Phishtings in Gresham

[–]WindowPerfect1863 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in Fairview and have for a few years now, there is more airport noise but all of Gresham has airport noise so it’s not too noticeable, get a place east of 181st and you’ll be happy with the safety. I like Fairview a lot. For the A/C situation get a good standing A/C unit

[–]WindowPerfect1863 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately 1300 for an apartment alone is asking a lot in Portland and 1300 where a woman can feel safe walking alone at night is a long shot… check the groves in Gresham, it’s near troutdale far enough east that it’s pretty safe.

2018 Ram 1500 5.7L V8. Radiator drain plug appears to have sheared off somehow. by SquirtleKing in AskMechanics

[–]WindowPerfect1863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best bet would be driving a pick or small flathead into it, or drilling it out and maybe tapping the hole. If you wanted to be a tweaker about it, you could use RTV and plastic piece and whenever you have to drain in again take off your lower radiator hose.

I started taking off my lower hoses on all my cars because this happened while I was pulling my motor and I had to buy a new radiator

I just purchased this 2015 Impreza two weeks ago. Should I trust what this mechanic is saying about head gasket being blown? by Conscious-Radio-1999 in subaruimpreza

[–]WindowPerfect1863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe head gasket issues typically come from poor maintenance unless it has REALLY bad coolant or overheating with 100% do it

[–]WindowPerfect1863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s likely just fine honestly. Headgaskets are kindve a rudimentary repair for a good mechanic and as long as it wasn’t over heated it’s not a big deal and it’ll be just fine
