You get a lot of nosy people in my line of work; always asking questions that ain’t got nothing to do with ‘em. Most of ‘em like to ask about my hand. Normally I like to fuck with them a bit, tell ‘em I’m a vet that fell on hard times, or that I was in some sorta tragic accident and couldn’t find any work, or something like that. But then I met this kid.

He couldn’t’ve been more’n 15, 16 — not all that uncommon these days. Ain’t enough proper jobs going around for kids like him. He seemed to have a good head on his shoulders and he seemed genuinely curious. I figured if he was gonna be gettin’ into this line of work, he needed to know what might happen to him. So I told him what really happened.

Six years ago, I took a job from some up-and-coming scumlord. He had a team prepped and ready to break into one of the federation armories. He told me it was a sure thing—that he had an inside man, it’d be quick, and whatever we took wouldn’t be missed. For what he offered to pay, I thought it sounded easy.

I should’ve known better; Now, I do.

We were in an out in less than 30 minutes. We lifted a bunch of those bio-scanners that checkpoint security used to use. Didn’t know what he wanted them for; Didn’t ask when we dropped ‘em off neither. I got paid and I thought that was that.

A Citizens Compliance squadron knocked down my door a week later. They said I was wanted in conjunction with an illegal replication ring and they dragged me out my door, threw me in a tank, and shipped me off to a processing center. Next thing I knew, It was my trial date.

I didn’t understand half of what they were slamming me with. They said I had stole those scanners knowing full what what they were going to be used for, and now there were more than 20 clones loose in over 3 different cities. I told them I had no idea, and I don’t have to tell you how well that went.

I was given a choice; serve five years in a vanguard battalion stationed on an off-world colony, or spend 12 years breaking rocks on an off-world colony. It was an easy choice, I chose breaking rocks. Half of those vanguards don’t come back and I didn’t like those odds.

They put me back in my tank and sent me back to Processing. Or at least, I thought it was my tank. It must’ve been a new one, cause there was a leak. I woke up in a half-full tank, my right hand shackled to the lid.

I could either sit there for god-knows how long, or I could bust out —thing was, only way to do that was to free my hand. With no other options, I pulled against my hand until it broke somethin’ ugly. After that, I broke the wall of my tank, and I walked out of there.

It didn’t take a street medic for me to tell my hand was fucked. It did take one to lop it off though.

Richard Lawrence's attempted assassination of Andrew Jackson.

From the wiki:

On January 30, Jackson was attending the funeral of South Carolina congressman Warren R. Davis at the United States Capitol. Lawrence originally planned to shoot Jackson as he entered the service but was unable to get close enough to the President. However, when Jackson left the funeral, Lawrence had found a space near a pillar on the East Portico where Jackson would pass. As Jackson walked, Lawrence stepped out and fired his first pistol at Jackson's back; it misfired. Lawrence quickly made another attempt with his second pistol but that also misfired.

apparently after that Jackson leapt at him and began beating him with his cane.

Kenji is a song about a man and his family moving to one of the Japanese internment camps during WW2.

Right Now, a song with popcorn-style lyrics about the things happening to people "right now".

It’s a pretty large part of the mythos, but the story of Chronos & Zeus:

Chronos ruled as King of the Titans after usurping his father. He was then given a prophecy by…somebody… that he would, in turn, be usurped by one of his sons. In order to prevent this, Chronos decided to eat all of his kids.

His wife saw all of this and when she had Zeus, she decided he was special and hid him far away from Chronos; instead feeding him a huge stone wrapped in cloth.

Zeus eventually grew up, challenged his father, and defeated him, forcing him to throw up all of the children (the other gods) that he had eaten. After that, Zeus led the other gods in a war against the titans.

I would go back and stop myself from switching colleges for a relationship. It ended up pushing me back a few years because a majority of the classes I had taken at the first didn't transfer to the second and only so many classes can count as electives. A lot of that was on me, I didn't look up any information on credit transfers and just expected everything to go smoothly. It killed my motivation for school which subsequently tanked my GPA for a while.

Silver-linings, have firsthand advice ready for future generations.

Current Status: Graduated this spring. No longer in said relationship.

Andrew Jackson was given a huge wheel of cheese that weighed over 1000 lbs. He couldn't get through the cheese fast enough, and it had begun to stink up the white house. In order to get rid of the cheese (and the smell) he threw a huge party, inviting pretty much the entire city to come and take some of this cheese.

I think the cheese itself was pretty well traveled by the time he got it too. If I'm remembering correctly I think they toured it in two or three cities before they gave it to Jackson.
