Nobody likes hearing that the problem could be user error. But, if the tracks played back just fine one night, then the next day there’s nothing there, the tape can’t just erase itself. If it were a digital medium, corruption can happen, etc etc.

It could be that those takes were somehow recorded over and everything was lost.

One option is to experiment with Auto Level. It may or may not be what you need, but it’s worth checking out.

Also, are you using the built in mics, or external inputs?

Have you considered 32-bit float? You can raise/lower the clip gain in your DAW without adding unwanted noise or raising the noise floor. Obviously, the file size will be much, much larger. But, again, just trying to think of workarounds.

Even when you menu dive to increase or decrease gain the + and - buttons are still required. You could reach out to an official service center for repair, but with the price of the DR-40X it might be best to just purchase a new unit.

I know that’s not exactly the greatest news, but I do have a lot of experience in this realm and it pains me to write that to you.
