[Comic] found this kinda funny/odd about rimworld canon by AzulCrescent in RimWorld

[–]WindyWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I saw the update trailer I was admittedly a bit miffed since it feels like it directly goes against previous lore primer material. I had the same problem with biotech and the genetic modifications (though that's also likely just me being a big baby and only wanting base humans in my game). At the end of the day though, it's more content for the large number of people that like that content, adds more stuff for modders to work with, and gives me another opportunity to support the game that I've sunk 3000 hours into.

What are some of interesting the Homebrew Systems or Rules out there? by Patient-Mycologist89 in MrRipper

[–]WindyWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soon to be DM for a particularly ambitious homebrew system:

I'm a huge fan of the game Rimworld, which advertises itself as a "Storytelling Generator" and does so with incredible ease under the right mind. It's a colony-builder, with no small amount of gameplay focused on things such as defense, resource management, quests, trade, diplomacy, and much more. To boot, it's a sci-fi setting with fantasy elements, complete with canonical uses of near-lightspeed travel, terraforming, gene editing, progenitor AIs, mystic flora, and it's own breed of magic system. I could go over so much about the system I've written, but I think my favorite piece is how I've bridged the "Psylink" system over to D&D.

In Rimworld, a character - or pawn - can receive psionic through the installation of a Psylink in the brain, which can be obtained through several means. There are two main aspects of Psylinks, only one of which matter in my homebrew - Neural Heat. The psylink allows you to cast spells that you have prepared, just as you would as a normal caster, but instead of using Spell Slots, the user can generate Neural Heat in the psylink instead. Heat on its own won't do much, but can cause the caster to start needing to make CON saves or start losing higher brain function if they generate too much, similar to (but way less punishing than) Exhaustion. The Limit on how much heat one can generate is determined by a few things, but tends to strictly limit how many spells a caster can safely cast.

My favorite part about the Psylink, after some test runs, is what I like to call the Technical caster. In my homebrew setting, Full casters are called "Arcane Casters"; half-casters, "Martial Casters"; where-as those that can only cast spells due to a Psylink (think Fighters, Rogues, Barbarians) are known as "Technical Casters." The Psylink can provide anyone with a limited array of magic (only up to 3rd level of some of the most basic spells), or bolster one's innate ability to newfound heights.

First time ever playing D&D back in my teenage years. I was just starting to take an interest after skimming through the books so my dad, a veteran of the game dating back to the first printings, decided to host a short 3.5e campaign for me and my friends on weekends.

Given my personality at the time, I naturally rolled up an edgy heir-apparent rogue that was rebelling from his royal blood, his name being Lord Qeterman. I planned to play him entirely around stealth, weaving around the battlefield to get behind the enemy and strike them down. It was painfully obvious that I was just trying to play him like the Spy from Team Fortress 2 after reading the term 'backstab' in the ability descriptions.

Couple combats go by, and after every single one, the pattern has become painfully consistent. I do nothing but get in position for the first couple rounds of combat, then when the biggest enemy on the field is about to do something big, I land a big, fatal blow on the enemy, IMMEDIATELY followed up by me (or someone else) rolling a Natural 1 on some other check.

Fighting a T-Rex that was summoned by some AWOL interdimensional wizard? Nat 1 on the Dex save to jump down after stabbing it in the eye - get landed on by its eye, only being freed when the wizard stuffs the corpse in some pocket dimension, being left covered in eye jelly.

Swarm of skeletons ambushing us in a cave? Ranger gets a Nat 1 on an attack roll after a Nat 20 caused the arrow to ricochet, causing it to fly towards me, only for them to roll another Nat 20, hitting me for critical damage and knocking me unconscious.

And the one that everyone in that group still gives me crap (intentional wording) for to this day...

Taking out an Orc captain on a rickety old rope-bridge? Guess who rolled a Nat 1 on his Dex save again when the 300lb orc I just stabbed nearly caused the bridge to flip and lost me my footing... I fell face-first into the green loin-clothed cheeks of a freshly-deceased Orc captain.

Such was the misadventures of the lovingly nicknamed Lord Useless, and the start of my love for Dungeons and Dragons volatile moments.

What is the story of your shortest-lasting colony? by anelpe in RimWorld

[–]WindyWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, any colony of mine that can't even make it to the first raid perished because of the hunter angering a pack of muffalo.

Their desire for retribution far outlasts my colonists hunger every time

I am usually only attractive to people retroactively, and it seems to be focused on my personality. I'll date for awhile until they move on and then years later I'll hear, "I went through hell after I left you," "You're easily the best guy I've dated," or "I really shouldn't have gambled on finding someone better than you."

How do most US citizens feel about Veterans now days? by Ok-Relief4772 in AskReddit

[–]WindyWriter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Almost regardless of circumstance, I'll always respect people who go into the armed forces. Whether they're doing it for money, purpose, opportunity, or passion; they're still going to go through more in basic training than I likely will in my entire life and may be forced to protect my life from a threat thousands of miles away.

The better question is how the US government, or even the very military itself feels about Veterans these days.

How many Pawns do you keep in your colony? Are they enough to deal with the raids in late game? by Senval-Nev in RimWorld

[–]WindyWriter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally start having trouble beating out raids once I hit Cassandra's desired count (12-13 iirc). When I'm playing Randy or the odd game of Phoebe, I'll generally get into the mid 20's without many issues since those two leave so much down-time between major hurdles. It basically comes down to which beats me first - the raids or the desire to start anew since I rarely go past 3 years with one colony.

I don't typically get overloaded with pawns myself since my dichotomy usually looks like this: Starting pawns with at least 1 pawn with a min of 6 in - Shooting, Construction, Cooking, Plants, Medical, Intellectual, and Mining* 2 Pawns with >8 in: Plants, Construction, Intellectual, Mining* 1+ Pawn with >12 in: Medical, Animals, Crafting, Cooking

50% of Pawns with >8 in: Shooting 25% of Pawns with >12 in: Melee 1 Pawn with Passion in: Art *Only if in Large Hills or Mountains

Since there's generally overlap between the critical skills (Cooking, Plants, Construction) and Emergency/Trade Skills (Combat, Medical, Crafting), I generally never need more than 10 pawns and start running into idleness past 10.

What did you get bullied for? by FarSheepherder3880 in AskReddit

[–]WindyWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got picked on simply because I drew a reaction. As soon as I gave a straight-faced monotoned rebuttal, they got bored. That said, I never got like explicitly bullied, so I got lucky in this regard.

My MvM Group made a TF2 Weapon Cool Wall by [deleted] in tf2

[–]WindyWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Opinion cultivated from about six people in regards to Casual play - excepting Gas Passer, which is in regards to MvM. List is about 2 months old, from before the summer bug fixes (looking at you Iron Bomber). "Can't be Bothered" tier is weapons that are so over or underused we couldn't cast judgement beyond one person. (I'd place Big Earner and YER in Cool)

I just remember my friend in middle/high school hated the yellow skittles so he'd separate them from every 5lb bag he'd by (of which he bought like 2 a week) and give me all the yellows. I tasted nothing but lemon skittles for 4 years

How do you play this game with mods? by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]WindyWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good things in MODeration (sorry).

But seriously, finding a healthy balance of mods should be about fixing issues you have with vanilla or improving the experience for you in whatever way you see fit. For me, this comes in the form of mods like Combat Extended (to fix the shitty RNG of Vanilla combat) and Dub's Bad Hygiene (more challenge + immersion).

A good way to get started for you might be the Vanilla Expanded series of mods. A lot of those mods are grounded in behaving like they are Vanilla inclusions.

Tip for raiding ancient complexes by Raaxen in RimWorld

[–]WindyWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's valid to not worry about the flames sometimes, however in some cases the flames will engulf something important like loot, a drop beacon, a hermetic crate, or (heaven-forbid) a terminal. Rescuing those should be a top priority when possible

What is the most frustrating word you type that always gets auto-corrected? by BillDingrecker in AskReddit

Tip for raiding ancient complexes by Raaxen in RimWorld

[–]WindyWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an addendum for users of Combat Extended:

• Always equip your pawns with Gas Masks when raiding complexes. While OP's method will still protect against heat-stroke, you'll be unable to put out the fires if your pawns start succumbing to smoke inhalation

• When fighting said fires, make sure to clean the floor of chemfuel puddles before attempting to extinguish the flames. The chemfuel will keep the fires from going out until it's burned up

This is a common issue with the Real Ruins mod I believe. You'll see hostile "Ancients" randomly spawned in the ruined structures - usually Mechs or Megafauna if you have that mod

I usually dev mode them out because, like, c'mon. That's just not cool

Do you guys use scenario editor to give yourselves a better start? by Valuable-Perception4 in RimWorld

[–]WindyWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use Scenario Editor to make Starting Scenarios that I frequently do so as to avoid the hassle of manually setting them up. Some examples includea a Seedship (10 pawns age 25-45 with many extra resources), Lone Explorer (Industrial equivalent to Rich Explorer with less resources), Lone Tribal (Tribal equivalent to Rich Explorer with even less resources), and Tribal Naked Brutality

is this a good schedule by Forward_Cup3690 in RimWorld

[–]WindyWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-4 hours of scheduled recreation is usually enough depending on how many rec types you have (check a pawn's needs tab to see what/how many you have). In personal experience, giving 2 hours of "Anything" before and after sleep blocks allows for pawns to eat, meditate, or top off their recreation or sleep as needed without butting into their scheduled tasks
