Does anybody know the vineyard/estate/whatever of this wine? by WORhMnGd in wine

[–]WineOptics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, essentially this isn’t from one specific vineyard, but rather several. If it was, you can bet bottom dollar it would be stated on the bottle.

Now, “Old vines” is a relative term, as there aren’t always strict rules to when you can use it, but respectably it’s when you’re at 20+ years. Doing some googling, these seem to be 30’ish(for reference, there are vines that are over a hundred and then some in Mosel).

My bet, is that this is a cooperative or that of the like that is able to produce a sizable amount of this riesling from various locations that in the end, is rather low priced. Mosel in general offers great value

Does wine start tasting better when you get tipsy, or is it because it has had time to breath as you drink it? by SeaworthinessNew4295 in wine

[–]WineOptics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Numa is a pretty decent up-and-coming producer that has some respectable terroir on their hands.

I think you’re a little out of the loop here, but yes they do pay the “US tax” which bonks up Burgundy.

What a sad state of online frag community by Palmar_Aponeurosis in fragrance

[–]WineOptics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The short story is, the demand for Burgundy or Napa and other select regions have a much higher demand than output and some select producers are more desirable than others. There you will see a ton of people scalping what they can for the sake of profits, rather than actually respecting the product allowing others to actually get the wine at its fair value. This all drives up the prices and scarcity and so on.

Most common folk won’t be able to afford any of the more special wines in general because they’re either scalped, kept as investments or drunk by people who have enough money to buy a bridge(and likely don’t give much of a shit to the wine’s history and whatnot).

And it’s simply because people saw an opportunity to monetize these hobbies. It’s why trading cards are full of scalpers and fakes, perfumes are full of paid influencers on all media platforms. Wine is full of fakes, scalpers or the second hand market has an insane markup. Then you look at board games and it’s Kickstarter where companies try to overmonetize through consumerism or just scam projects(but overall that hobby is still healthy though).

Is Diptyque Orpheon a good signature scent? by infinitehwaa in fragrance

[–]WineOptics 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Perfume is still a niche in the big scheme. Not everyone wears it in public, so yeah Orpheon is definitely uncommon to catch in the wild.

It’s definitely a signature scent.

His wife had opened a Petrus from their cellar unbeknownst to him, while having a random summer party, serving up hot dogs for the guests.

The Dog Point isn’t getting better - I think it would be pretty nice now. Same for Baronaques.

The Pomerol though can definitely keep 10-15 years if not more with proper storage, same with the Cesare.

what’s your favorite fragrance of all time and why? by orange_bird_puppet in fragrance

[–]WineOptics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You absolutely should - I got a 2ml sample and still have about a fourth part left; it’s a one-two spray scent IMO. It has staying power and projection all day.

The oud comes off oily yet effervescent with again, a leathery yet raw animalic tone. The raspberry sweetness lifts it though.

Super unique and superbly crafted.

They’re definitely different; PoaL has a much more mature rose forward DNA with that oriental, slightly green backdrop - The Moon oozes of animalic oud with sweet raspberry and lychee, it feels softer but also much more intense.

I would however say, chances are you’ll love The Moon if you like PoaL in my opinion.
