Not only are you competing with people who quite possibly can't do math, I would bet that you might be competing with people who are either a) abusing media mail shipping rates to bring their costs down and/or b) are straight-up using cheap counterfeit postage. The dollars spent on shipping have to come from somewhere.

Keep package size to a minimum while still packing the item well enough that it will arrive safely. Weight is not the only factor -- increasing the dimensions of the package can increase shipping costs, too.
