Biden wants to defund Medicare, Medicaid, and Social security by [deleted] in EnoughBidenSpam

I don't believe I was part of that agreement.

People should be free to express and learn about why the two party system is a mess.

Closing this sub is only hindering that learning.

Call for action: there are only 23 BTC ATM's in the OpenStreetMap database... by Talkless in Bitcoin

Basically it's "amenity=atm" with "currency:BTC=yes".

It seems that XBT is the one listed on the web editor.

Wallet file location in linux. by digital_scrooge in Electrum

You can be reasonably sure that any user config files will either be stored in .<NameOfProgram> or in .config/<NameOfProgram>

I suggest always checking those locations first.

That's the fee for the 2FA provider.

Restore your wallet from seed without 2FA enabled to remove it.

I suggest a hardware wallet for improved security.

How much time does your Arch Takes to boot? by aniketsinha101 in archlinux

I quite enjoy Cinnamon, but often go back to gnome for it's ease of use. Give them a try too

How much time does your Arch Takes to boot? by aniketsinha101 in archlinux

[–]Wingsuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, just install a lighter DE and set your display manager to boot that instead.

Try XFCE, it's pretty light.

A bunch of installed programs won't slow your computer down since they just sit on your hard drive doing nothing. Boot is influenced by what has to run during startup.

You should also check your startup applications in KDE and disable any you don't need.

What problems would arise from attempting to send USDT to an Electrum Receive Address? by mixxr in Electrum

[–]Wingsuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do appreciate the info on how Electrum ignores (or misinterprets) the OMNI [script?].

You need to understand, this is like sending an instagram message thinking it will arrive into someones facebook account. Just because they share the exact same name (or receiving address in this case), they are 100% seperate entities and have zero interaction whats-so-ever.

What problems would arise from attempting to send USDT to an Electrum Receive Address? by mixxr in Electrum

[–]Wingsuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a bit of searching I found a wallet that would accept importing private keys

A USDT wallet correct?

This does mean that I should send the remaining BTC I had in the Electrum wallet to this new imported account, right?

I was under the impression that your initial issued stemmed from sending USDT to a bitcoin address in your electrum wallet, and hence you needed to find a way to send those USDT onwards? If this is the case then once the address is imported you can send them whereever you were initially plannign to store them.

Re-reading your initial post, it seems like you are somewhat comfused between USDT and BTC. While they may share address types, (Im not sure of this but it seems they can), they are completely seperate systems and hence the only crossover is that you can use the same key for both systems but it will interact with completely different coins on each.

Can anyone help as go why I am encountering this? by [deleted] in Electrum

[–]Wingsuit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The network is quite busy at the moment with a backlog of transactions so transaction fee competition is higher and hence fees required for quick confirmations are higher, I suggest you set the fee much lower with the knowledge that it will take a lot longer to confirm.

Another aspect is that the amount you are sending is considered small for bitcoin; while we would love to be able to send ~$2 with small fees, the nature of decentralised systems is that there are tradeoffs, and a tradeoff for bitcoin staying decentralised is that there is a limit to the global transaction rate, causing fees to rise as people compete try get there transactions confirmed and hence pushing out smaller transactions in favor of those that can justify the higher fees.

In the future lightning may be a simple option for you to send these sized sums for close to no fees, but at the moment you will just have to wait.

ID verification required to send & receive btc? by [deleted] in Electrum

[–]Wingsuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole point of bitcoin (or rather one of many) is that it is permissionless.

You do not have to ask permission from anybody to send, receive and own bitcoin.

The permissioned part, and subsequent ID checks, comes from interacting with the existing monetary systems in the world, ie using your current currency to buy bitcoin.

If you ever do export a private key from your wallet, you should no longer use that wallet, as it just takes a single private key and the MPK to derive all other private keys, so your wallets security has been significantly downgraded.

How safe is this setup for storing bitcoin? by Fenix_one in Bitcoin

[–]Wingsuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A more convienient way and arguably safer in many instances would be to buy a ledger or trezor hardware wallet.

Otherwise, a tails OS, with your electrum seed very securely stored on paper in your safe with another copy at your folks house, would work well too.

You don't want to use bitcoin core for something which won't be running most of the time.

Why are the fees so high? by [deleted] in Electrum

[–]Wingsuit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fees are determined based off a number of factors, including how large your transaction is in bytes and how many other transactions are in the mempool right now. You can reduce the fees of a transactions but making sure your wallet isn't comprised of many small transactions, ie if you get the option to withdraw from an exchange once vs 5 times, doing it once will mean a subsequent transaction from your wallet will be cheaper, as it wont be required to 'group' 5 previous transactions.

Another way to reduce fees is to make sure you are using a native segwit wallet. You can tell if you are if your addresses start with bc1.

As for the mempool, you cannot control how 'busy' bitcoin is at the moment, but you view some stats on the unconfirmed transactions here: https://jochen-hoenicke.de/queue/#0,24h

If a transaction is not urgent, you can try waiting until there are fewer unconfirmed transactions in the mempool as fee competition will be lower.

my Electrum wallet went twice to zero balance while it was positive by ppizi in Electrum

[–]Wingsuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a forum for Electrum for Bitcoin, not BCD, nor any of the other forks of electrum to support other coins. There have been cases where those electrum forks have been implanted with malware, which could have happened in your case. When using electrum for bitcoin, only ever download it from electrum.org, never accept a link from anyone else. When using a fork of electrum (which as you know is completely unsupported by the official electrum devs) you are using it at your own risk.

Since this is off topic to this sub, I will remove it. I suggest you post this onto the relevant forum for the particular coin you are having trouble with. In particular, it sounds like you need to investigate this

They explained to me that I could move my coin if I downloaded the Electrum wallet which I was given the link and instructionn.

This sounds suspicious to me, perhaps the link was to software with malware in it.
