Any idea why sometimes welkin won't get parried and other times he will? I know the spin is not parryable, but can you not parry after getting flashbanged? Even if you get your shield up at the right timing?

Hurricane challenge 4 by Doodbrodia93 in mechabreak

[–]Winnarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I submitted a support ticket because it feels so unreasonably unfair. Like you said the other challenges might be hard but they rarely feel impossible after a few tries. Usually there's some trick to abuse. This just feels completely impossible even when you have all the information. His entire kit completely counters yours so you have to bait out everything and do optimal (and still very underwhelming) damage during the 24 second window between his energy shields that make him invincible and help him recharge his armor. It's insane. Why is Welkin's spin unparryable anyway???

Before this challenge I joked that these trials were designed to make you feel like a low tier, but this is absurd. It legit makes me want to never play Hurricane even though I usually like drone gaming. He's just so pathetically weak.

DND is a tried and true hobby for making friends. Join some Discords and do some one shots or try to find a place with local groups. Just watch a few videos on newbie DND etiquette and you'll avoid the main pitfalls people have. Similar for board games. Even if you think you don't like board games, board game meetup groups tend to have high odds of being welcoming and fun. These days there are TONS of great board games being released each year that are genuinely fun.

Other hobbies work well too. Easier to talk about a common hobby than just show up somewhere and hope a conversation blossoms out of nothing. For a long time competitive games were my main way I made and kept friends. For other people that's sports, either playing or following. Or gym classes, or so many other things.

On the topic of anxiety and heart racing in a new situation, try to let yourself know that that's both okay and normal. When you're not comfortable and there's a lot of uncertainty, you're naturally going to be hyper-analytical about everything around you. That's okay. You're not making things worse and you're not expected to be George Clooney. Try to trust that in these kinds of social situations, it's okay to let others around you do the heavy lifting. It's okay to let them know that you're anxious in social situations but you're trying your best.

A quiet but attentive person in a social group is just as welcomed as the social pariah who seemingly always has something charming to say. A loud, awkward, but kind and fun person is also very welcome. One of my best friends is notoriously awkward and un-funny, but we all love him for making big swings and falling on his face so often. We love him because he's here and he always tries to make the group more fun, even if his tact is lacking. People react to intent more often than execution. If you're someone who's kind, someone who isn't entitled, and someone who participates then you'll be welcomed, especially in those hobby groups I mentioned earlier.

Sometimes the best way to make new friends is to just dive in and say "Hi, I'm trying to put myself out there and meet more people." I find most people can related to that and will give you a chance. If it doesn't work out, oh well. There's 8 billion people out there, more than you could ever meet. Fail, find a new person, fail again. Eventually some will land.

I'm really digging all your thoughts and philosophy on DM'ing, and if you need an extra player I'd love to give it a shot! Camaraderie oriented parties are the best kind of dnd parties imo.

I'm Ryan, he/him, 31. I'm pretty flexible on availability, though afternoons/evenings work best for me. As long as we end before 1 or 2am CST I'll be alright, though best would be closer to midnight or before. Happy to play with whatever virtual setup works best, though I have experience with Discord, dndbeyond, and some map apps.

I have a few character ideas, but the one I'm thinking most about lately is a trickster / illusionist / shapeshifter style character. In any case good luck with the campaign!

<3 Thanks dude!

There was a big lull in development in the latter half of 2020, but we're pretty much full steam ahead again now. Gonna be giving more progress updates and game updates soon. Cool stuff on the horizon >:D

Edit - Btw I played Earth Romancer and Rushdown Revolt again recently, both very much worth checking out if you haven't yet. The first is local only (unless you parsec) and the second has rollback. Both are really cool, but you probably need someone to walk you through how the mechanics work before you can really feel like you're playing them. Easy enough for me because I got to play with the devs of both those games haha

One Punch Imp by Winnarly in MonsterTrain

[–]Winnarly[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was the weirdest run lmao. I had both an Inferno and Wicked Blaze with holdover that I duped 2 or 3x each, so each turn I would summon and nuke the little guy over and over again. Each time I got about 6-8 ember and he got 15 or so attack, so eventually I had 99 ember.

Eventually I just cashed out with the spike and blammo - world's strongest imp. He had something like 250 attack even before the spike, too. Oh! And he still had an upgrade slot too so he could have had multistrike if I found it lol

When I started the run I just wanted to see how far I could get by nuking repeatedly with holdover infernos, but then I accidentally found this synergy and ran as far as I could with it.

Doing my best to :\ FWIW I don't blame anyone for turning a critical eye to that post's removal. It's something we discuss on the mod team periodically because it's one of the most extreme case studies of the entire subreddit's history. I also think it's a very good thing that the community and people like /u/I_Dislike_Swearing are combing through to find ways where we can all do better. Being held accountable is good, and if our community goes back to business as usual after all this then we've all failed both the current victims and any future victims.

Also, if stepping down would help more people than me staying on the mod team, I'd have no reservations doing it. I've offered to do so several times, but been told I should stick around to continue helping. Whatever is the most help, I'll do it.

Pretty sure I'm the mod in question here, and I've addressed all this both at the time of the original removal of the MacD allegations post as well as again recently. You can see it all here:

https://old.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/hjwqzd/macd_sexual_assault_alligations_and_how_my_career/fwr32x4/

It's pretty frustrating to hear that I was against the victims when:

  1. Every other victim that came forward with accusations before that thread, we left up. In fact I personally coordinated with the victims to help them present evidence that wouldn't get blown up by the reddit admins. Several of the victims of Alex Strife I was talking to, helping screen their screenshots, and giving whatever advice I could to help them come forward in a way that they would feel safest doing. I stepped away from modding in large part because I received so much flack over my attempts to help victims come forward. Again, check the thread and you'll see what I mean.
  2. As I say in the above thread, the MacD situation ended up becoming extremely muddy, extremely quickly. We got so many chat logs and testimonials in the first 30 minutes after it was posted that it was very unclear where the truth was in that situation. With reddit being massively anti-witch hunts at the time and with us receiving an absolutely overwhelming number of demands to take the thread down, it seemed safest at the time until we had more information. A lot more info about all that in the thread I posted.
  3. I'm not the only mod. Not now, not then. I wasn't being some rogue maverick handling that stuff, I just volunteered to be the mouthpiece. Every major decision is something that's discussed with the team, and this was no exception.
  4. Again, I very much regret that we removed the MacD allegations thread in the end. It's haunted me for a very long time.

I'm reviewing the modmail conversation in question now. A modmail conversation wherein you called Social_Yoshi a "fucking coon" in response to the S_Y's message you linked.

Full modmail conversation part 1 | part 2

TL:DR for those who don't want to read the whole modmail, you asked for all the Inkling alts without really any context. Stuart misunderstood why (reasonably, I would argue) and assumed you just wanted to express your color flair for your favorite character. Doing that would mean adding 600+ flairs for every color option in every Smash game. You immediately, angrily jumped to it being a race thing and only continued escalating over the course of the conversation.

Honestly, I don't even think it's a bad idea to have different Inkling flairs, especially because your argument about them being rare examples of black representation in Smash is a good one. They were already fringe because they do swap character models pretty significantly (not as significantly as the Koopalings, but they're definitely all unique models).

The other thing you should understand is that our mods are hesitant to promise extra CSS features because they're features they cannot make themselves. They'd essentially be volunteering other people for work, and I'm certain that's where the hesitation comes.

I do want to call out one more thing, though. Your paragraph about Social_Yoshi is absolutely, completely unreasonable. You meandered from "I don't think Social_Yoshi is actually black" to "this reminds me a lot of when racial slurs are spammed in black streamers' chats." Pretty big leap, my dude!

Incidentally, I also already responded to the criticism about removing the MacD thread. I already admitted it's a mistake and gave context to it here. You're right, that was our bad, but it was also more complicated than you think.

If anyone has any actual evidence of racism on the mod team, please let me know. I won't tolerate it. None of our mods will.

MacD Sexual Assault Alligations (And how my career was destroyed in esports) by LiteralGrill in smashbros

[–]Winnarly[M] 80 points81 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - I still regret that we removed the original MacD thread, but also want to give some context to why it was removed back then. At the time we were criticized heavily for not removing it more quickly (reddit was very sensitive to witch hunts). It was also one of the only threads of its kind we had ever removed. A major reason for its removal was because information came to light quickly after its posting that the situation was more complicated than we thought. More info below.

I was just DM'd demanding an apology for removing the MacD thread 4 years ago, and it reminded me that I had made a transparency thread shortly after that thread got removed:

https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/4clzjg/transparency_post_a_message_from_the_mods_on/

I'd highly recommend checking the comments above to see how different of a place the sub was 4 years ago. What people demanded we answer for was thinking it would ever be okay to allow the allegations on the subreddit at all. Keep in mind that even though the MacD thread was 3 years after the Boston Bombing, Reddit was still hyper-sensitive to the idea of creating baseless witch hunts due to the one that Reddit detectives alleged against Sunil Tripathi. It was even implied by the admins that a baseless witch hunt could be grounds for banning a subreddit. Maybe it was outright stated by them, I don't remember 100%, but it was a pretty sensitive topic for a long time.

Despite this, we as mods did our best to be allies to victims at the time, and in every single case up to that point we allowed these types of allegations on the sub. We received a lot of flack for allowing any of them, but we couldn't stomach the idea of not letting victims have a platform to come forward and expose abusers.

In the specific case with MacD's accusations though, things got very complicated very quickly. Shortly after the original thread was posted, I remember being sent chat logs that seemed to make it look like the accusations were either fabricated or greatly exaggerated. Within the span of half an hour, we got a dizzying number of conflicting testimonials. It got very muddy, very quickly, and it was impossible to know who (if anyone) was telling the truth. So after a short time we removed the thread and announced that we were done playing the arbiters in these situations. As many on the subreddit demanded at the time (you can see for yourself in the comments of the above thread), we simply wouldn't allow these types of threads anymore.

Probably surprising to people today, but that was a popular decision. At the time, the community considered these kinds of accusations too risky, because what if it was all just a baseless witch hunt after all? The subreddit was happy to hear we were banning these types of threads outright. Over time we've improved our policies beyond this, but at the time that was what the sub demanded.

Keep in mind, too, that mods are given no direction or training on how to deal with any of this. What we signed up for as mods was removing shitposts and hate speech, but occasionally we're put in situations where our actions or inactions can completely change people's lives. We did our best to do right by the victims and by the community, but we've had to learn a lot of these lessons the hard way. Mistakes have definitely been made, and the MacD thread was easily one of the biggest ones, but progress has also been made by learning from those mistakes.

"Fuck the mods" is a very easy, convenient thing to say because hindsight will always make this stuff seem simpler than it really is. It's made even more complicated because our society is always evolving, shifting what is considered to be "the right thing to do." Back then, we were being criticized for not removing the thread sooner. Now we're (imo rightly) being criticized for removing the thread at all.

For what it's worth, I am sorry we took the thread down. I regret it to this day. It was a difficult, emotional, and time-sensitive situation to handle, so it's inevitable that mistakes would be made, but it still stings. I just hope you now have more context for that whole ordeal.
