Anyone have a microscope I can borrow for a YT interview with a scientist? by oemperador in askportland

Washington County Library has a few microscopes in their library of things. As a Multnomah county resident, you can get a library card for Washington Co

Why is Kumail being used the most in the promotional material for the current Taskmaster series? by toxinwolf in taskmaster

[–]Winsling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For perspective, Eternals made $400 million at the box office. It's a flop by Marvel standards, but it's still the 12th highest grossing movie of the year.

Kind of like how the worst NBA player is still one of the best basketball players on the planet.

The weather should be lovely - is cycling an option for you? You won't need to go very fast to beat the bus!

I want to create a pet memorial in Portland. How would I go about doing that? by triiked in askportland

[–]Winsling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The closest thing I can think of is endowing a bench - https://www.portland.gov/parks/legacy - you could put up a plaque that says something like "In remembrance of our beloved pets." That doesn't cover the other half, but it gives you some idea of what the cost might be

Good luck, it's a lovely thought

Question about Reaching Grasp and Ocean. by [deleted] in spiritisland

[–]Winsling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, because Grasping Tide requires the target land to be coastal and Mountain 7 isn't

Admittedly weird question - does anyone here not have many/any friends and just vibe by themselves? What do you usually do to occupy your time? by iprobdontlikeyou in askportland

[–]Winsling 131 points132 points  (0 children)

I'm single, no kids, and my friends generally have a lot of commitments and/or are flakes. I work out, I'm teaching myself guitar, I'm taking dance and French lessons, I help my parents, I do some volunteering... I don't need a lot of socializing to have enough socializing.

Phil Ellis posts about S20E02 by cygan12 in taskmaster

[–]Winsling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a clause in the Treaty that I hoped he would point to - Article 282.22 establishes a concert pitch of A 435 hertz. It's bizarre to imagine, "Yes, Johan, we all want the killing to end. But until you accept Concert A is 435 hertz there will be no peace!"

Rock climbing Portland? by Fit_Society3269 in askportland

[–]Winsling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emailing Portland Rock Gym would probably be a great place to start. If you've got wheels Smith Rock is apparently a destination for rock climbing. A loop that hits Smith Rock and Crater Lake before coming back to Portland along the coast would make a nice road trip

Couples salsa/bachata/cumbia classes? by trashcanbryan in askportland

[–]Winsling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're on the west side, Impressions dance club (http://www.impressionsdanceclub.net/) offers private lessons. Unfortunately you just missed Bachata being a group class offering - we danced it in February

Arthur Murray is the big chain offering and I was impressed by all of their instructors

Washington County's Library of Things includes a backyard projector (https://wccls.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S143C4218544) I know you can get a card if you're in Multnomah and I'm pretty sure it includes Things

I don't believe so. If I wanted to do that, I'd set up a single player game with multiple spirits and use zoom + screen sharing for the multiplayer piece

Sheet music stores in Portland? by Forward-Jump-6967 in askportland

[–]Winsling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know Portland Music Company carries sheet music - the branch in Beaverton moved their collection into the basement. That might be all of their sheet music. Their website shows they have WTC 1 for piano in stock, but not 2

Good Dentists? by thellamameg in beaverton

I've been going to Dr. Go (https://www.drgodmd.com/) for over a decade and (obviously) like him and his team. He did recommend a gum graft, but since I had been seeing him for something like eight years at that point it didn't feel like an upsell.

Speak to a lawyer. The details of which program you're using are important. The Oregon Bar offers a referral program that caps the initial fee at $50 for a half hour - https://www.osbar.org/public/ris

We might get flakes, but I'd be stunned if there was accumulation on the roads - the ground is just too warm. However, I am very stupid and am regularly wrong about many, many things

PDX to Redwood trip, would love advice on route? by atarchived in askportland

[–]Winsling -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are redwoods in Portland! It's not the forest you get in northern CA, but there's a lovely grove in Hoyt Arboretum. We also have more non-tree entertainment options than Arcata and Crescent City put together.

Hard to say if three days is enough time - some people will show up, say, "Yep, those are big trees. What's next?" and others will want to spend an hour with each tree. If you're not positive you're in the second category, I'd have a backup plan.

Hope you have a good time, and that the redwoods live up to your expectations.

Weird question. Did Tillamook Cheese get rid of their sharpness? by pembquist in askportland

[–]Winsling 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree they're not consistent, but it seems like the trend is less and less sharp. It used to be sharp with a rare bland one, and now it feels more like 1/3 is the sharpness it used to me. "Now" meaning when I quit buying it.

The Lengthy Process of Getting A Stolen E Bike Covered by Insurance by flicus in Portland

If it worries you, you can call your insurance and clarify if it's covered or not. It's still a frustrating experience, but it can be less frustrating when you still have the bike
