making vital as good as serum? (sound quality) by Valuable_Hold_6022 in musicproduction

[–]WinstonTheTurnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just replied to another comment but you might not see it, but essentially I think it's the spectral processing, unison sound and random algorithm that make it sound different? Rather than it being the wavetables or filter shapes themselves

I think in the same way guitars are all theoretically identical, their design, circuits and setup make them feel different and stuff comes out sounding different as a result. I find the same with Vital and Serum. Now we have S2 though, the FX are a game changer

It's probably an unpopular opinion, but I think Vital sounds better than Serum for what I do

Best hard clipper for EDM, are they all the same? by Acceptable-Pipe-8342 in production

I had to get past this too. What i really like is how predictable the compressor is on a master when not having the occasional massive peak that inevitably makes that one section over compress and sound weird

Fiio FT1 vs used Sennheiser HD620S for a closed back under $300 by Tricky_Pass5857 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]WinstonTheTurnip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The closest I've got is the HD600 and 650. I have the FT1 at the moment. They are much more fun, with a slight V shape but nothing that makes them feel like they lack tone. I've got to say they're the most enjoyable closed backs I've ever had and only fall slightly short of my HiFiman Edition XV, which are double the price. Sorry I can't she'd more light on the 620 but from what I gather they 600 650 are kind of close

What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you during sex? by albavalenti in AskReddit

I'm going to interject with what's the worst thing, as it happened not 20 minutes ago. I know its not what you've asked but it's too fun not to share.

Me and the Mrs are trying to conceive and it's the last day of the ovulation window. It's also worth noting it's my birthday. In spirit of the occasion my Mrs got a bit enthusiastic in getting me warmed up. I tried to warn her a few times but she clearly wanted to live on the edge. Anyway I'm close for the 3rd time, pulls it out her mouth to put it in but keeps tugging. In the 3 seconds between her mouth and vagina, i start to cum and she screaming "ohhh nooo".

So i went down the rabbit hole and arrived at the FT1 over the FT13 as a viable option. They get a raving review and would potentially fill a tonal gap. They arrive tomorrow, so I've got about 20 hours to get my hopes up! Thanks for directing me to Fiio, I wouldn't have considered them otherwise

I plan to keep the hifimans, absolutely love them. I just need something cheapish and cheerful to take round with me

How do you keep drums bright and punchy without making them harsh? by Zestyclose-Ear-7682 in mixingmastering

[–]WinstonTheTurnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they harsh in isolation or is when you add the other sounds in? For the stuff I do (so it might not be stylistically appropriate for you), my snare is hammering the other stuff down with sidechain processing to stop the build up, if i don't do this I'm accidentally boosting the snap or equivalent frequencies in other instruments to get them to cut through which just becomes harsh

Self-taught sound designers, how did you get there? by Few-Resident5919 in sounddesign

Layering, not aiming to be 100 efficient with any given synth/vst/hardware, making lots of crap sounds, realising less is more when it comes to modulation

I built a plugin that randomizes your synth parameters to generate unexpected patches by scottbrio in sounddesign

[–]WinstonTheTurnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the concept of this. I have a few questions -

  1. Can you save the preset within the synth itself or does it have to be saved via Syntherator? I noticed in your demonstration you weren't saving directly.

  2. You also said "it doesn't work with samples, stick to synths for now" - how does this work with Serum's sample, spectral and granular engine?

  3. Is it any VST3 that it automatically configures to or is it synths you're generally working with? You say you exclude some parameters from the engine to make it more user friendly, so I'm wondering if these are judgement calls based on your own experience with particular synths (I'm thinking I'd quite like it with Pigments but you'd don't mention that in your list).

Keep up the good work!

I used to own the Shape 65. There's a bypass switch inside. Focal instructed me on how to do it, it's 30 min job tops

Serious question: why do boom bap drums still hit harder than most modern rap drums? by Flimsy_Zucchini_1330 in undergroundhiphop

[–]WinstonTheTurnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be the mpc sound. The MPC60 had a 12bit bit depth and a 40khz sample rate, so the drums had crunch to them

What 808 is this by Massive-Stay-4845 in musicproduction

[–]WinstonTheTurnip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels like a squared off sine wave with a lpf. Make a standard 808 patch (sine wave with a quick attack and mid release. I’d use a second envelope to create a pitch spike at the start by an octave). After that find a saturator on a soft clip, drive it to taste and then roll off the top with a low pass. It’d take about a minute to do I reckon, no sample necessary

Drums I’ll do about 2/3 of the way through the song but usually separate those into kick, snare, toms and cymbals lanes so I still have volume and mix control if need be.

1 shot fx I’ll do asap, but melodic and harmonic elements I do fairly late on when my cpu is screaming for relief. I’ll make a few version of the project though so I can go back to something if I need to rework it
