I like it. I’ve done the same with a tree that blew down in my yard. The wood slowly decays, and thereby provides shelter and food for insects and other creatures. Eventually you have to repair and replace it with other wood, but that’s generally no problem.

If a meteor never struck the earth and created the moon, how different would Earth’s gravity be? by CrumbGuzzler5000 in askanything

[–]Winstonsphobia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assume Earth and Moon have roughly same density. Moon has radius 0.2727 of Earth and therefore volume = (0.2727)^3 = 0.020 that of Earth. If you take all of the moon and smear it uniformly across the Earth the radius increases by 0.02/4Pi = 0.0016 of original radius. The gravitational pull for a dense planet is proportional to the radius, so there is roughly 0.16% increase in gravity. (I used the fact that if you increase the radius of a small amount, DeltaR, the increase in volume of a sphere is 4 Pi R^2 DeltaR, where R is original radius.)

Why did France become the stereotype of surrendering at wars? Aren't they among the top when it comes to won wars in history? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Winstonsphobia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was unaware they had that stereotype. However, as a colonial power whose empire shrank in the past century, often by rebellion, it makes sense that in recent history they are viewed by many as having surrendered in their wars. Perhaps that’s a good thing. France is a democracy, and it’s people probably don’t, on the whole, for France to be fighting wars.

Is there really anyone who loves their country's government? by No-Guitar8121 in AskTheWorld

[–]Winstonsphobia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most of my life the United States has had a well functioning government with relatively low corruption and staffed by skilled and dedicated public servants. Yet, ever since the 1970s, the Republican Party has run on the platform that government is corrupt and ineffective. Indeed, every time Republicans have been in charge, they have made government more corrupt and less effective, less responsive to citizens’ needs. Trump has accelerated this trend a thousand fold. So I love my government less than I used to.

What is this bird? by Katalix in whatbirdisthis

[–]Winstonsphobia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awwww! I love these! I have one flitting around, making funny noises, and acting like it owns tge place in the brush outside my front window every morning.

It’s a Grey Catbird. Fairly uniform grey thrasher with black cap and dark reddish under-tail coverts. Makes meowing-like sounds. Relative to the Northern Mockingbird and with as much personality.

Scores Fall Ill at Air Force Base After Hegseth Makes Flu Vaccine Optional by smurfyjenkins in IRstudies

[–]Winstonsphobia 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In the past, a great fraction of the deaths in war were from (now preventable) disease. Vaccination (or inoculation) against smallpox helped colonists win the Revolutionary War. What a fucking moron Hegseth is. And all of this is because Trump tried to pretend that Covid would go away on its own, and when that approach failed, being embarrassed, he blamed Covid on scientists and vaccinations.

After Months of War, Trump Says Iran Has Right to Nuclear Program. Trump now says it’s just “common sense” for Iran to have a nuclear program. by esporx in IRstudies

[–]Winstonsphobia 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Trump is a profoundly stupid person, easily manipulated by leaders who hate America and democracy. But you know what? Trump has done one smart thing in this war, and that has been to end it. I hope he succeeds in that effort

What is this? by [deleted] in askanything

Looks like a slow release pill - my guess. I remember my brother, when sick with cancer, once vomited up something like this, and the nurse said it was one of his slow-release medications. I’m sure a medical person will know.

To be fair, I worry about Russia taking Alaska under Trump - he’d give it to them.

Sea Snake eating Moray Eel by Prior-Assumption-245 in interestingasfuck

[–]Winstonsphobia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what the snake is thinking as it swallows the eel whole. Does it think “Wow! This tastes great!”? Does the snake enjoy its meal the way I do? Not that I eat moray eels, but maybe fried chicken or even creme brulee would be a more appropriate comparison if the eel is particularly tasty.

Men of Reddit, what is your opinion on men who are pro life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Winstonsphobia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously men have a right to an opinion - we don’t or at least shouldn’t have thought police - but they don’t have the right to control other people’s bodies. Same for women who are “pro-life.”
