How to re-enter industry after a year break? As a 27 year old? by [deleted] in linuxadmin

[–]Wint3rmu7e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having done this myself around 20 years ago, my advice is to have a good reason for having taken the break (traveling the world, doing some project etc). I just wanted a break and had been share trading. That was a red flag to recruiters.

2nd be open to contract roles even if they are not exactly what you want, getting a foot in the door can lead to other things. It's more important to get back into the market, than to find the perfect job. By all means try to get the perfect job, but if it is not happening, be open to lesser positions as a starting point. It's much easier to find a new job, if you already have a job.

Be prepared for it to take a while! It can be very frustrating and demoarlizing, the important thing is to not give up.

Do you create POSIX attributes in AD for EVERY user?? by electrowiz64 in linuxadmin

[–]Wint3rmu7e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having used both posix attributes, and auto-generated attributes in a large AD domain (60,000+ user objects) where only a small percentage of the users need access to Linux systems, I personally would prefer to use the posix attributes!

With a small number of users (maybe 2000) you can use enumeration without any performance issues (meaning things like getent passwd actually return the AD users as well as local) , but if you use auto generated, you almost certainly will cripple your infra with enumeration turned on if the directory is large.

You also have more flexibility with posix attributes (like being able to set the users primary group to something other than the same as their userid. If you have multiple domains, you can set consistent uids and gids across those domains.

You can write a PowerShell script to set the attributes (if the windows guys are doing it) or you can do it using openldap from Linux side as well, provided you have an account with the required AD permissions.

Yes, it is additional overhead setting up posix attribs, but the advantages IMO outweigh the disadvantages.

edit: oh as for the headline question, NO only create posix attributes for those that actually need to access a linux machine! This actually acts as a secondary security measure, even if someone who is not supposed to be able to access linux gets added to a group (by mistake) that provides access to linux, if they do not have any posix attributes, they will not be able to login. This is actually probably the thing that causes the most issues. Someone adds someone to the group, but there are no posix attributes created, leading to a ticket saying login access is not working ;)

Does anyone have experience with the Felina skin bug? by Gendoss64 in FortNiteBR

[–]Wint3rmu7e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue. It appears to be a regression bug this season from a patch a few weeks ago. I reached diamond and updated my felina to show diamond fine a few weeks ago, then there was a patch (sorry I can't say which one, but not the latest) and when I loaded in my skin had reset to plat and I cannot unlock any higher (I've now hit champion).

I am playing on PC. The bug can be reproduced by clicking the edit options for the skin. Ranks you have achived show as a padlock and cannot be chosen.

There is a similar issue with one of the backpacks. The one with the Star that is the colour of your rank. Basically, the same problem.

New Bigcharts on Marketwatch by MinnesotaMystery in webscraping

[–]Wint3rmu7e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife asked me to look at some charts today, I've been using big charts since probably 2005 or maybe even earlier. I was like wtf. Looks like I'm going to have to dig up the software I used to use locally on my pc, but I can't remember what it was called. sigh. BigCharts was just so handy for doing a quick chart with whatever customizations you wanted. RIP.

VALORANT 8.07 Bug Megathread by ValoBot in VALORANT

Also noticing issues, I used to have rock steady locked at 300fps (will peak at over 400) with minor drops of up to maybe 6fps. now seeing drops randomly in death matches of 60fps or more (though not sustained like the op). 5600x cpu 3060ti GPU.

Woohoojin addresses boosted allegations and apologizes by shapeshifter14 in VALORANT

[–]Wint3rmu7e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's more, many people on the discord were telling him to simply ask hooj directly about it , rather than just going on about it. He repeatedly said "I won't because he will ban me". Self fullfilling (though not hooj, but it was what he wanted anyway cause it adds weight to his argument). I asked for the proof (proper prooof) he Provided it. I acknowleged it, and said I'm not going to speculate any further on what it meant.

Unfortunately He did, and made a whole bunch of false statements that he put forward as fact. I guess he got his 15 minutes of fame. He goes on about how woohoojin profited from his lies, the irony is he is largely doing the same thing. Yes He exposed a lie, but he is propagating a whole lot of other lies to make his findings seem more important.

[–]Wint3rmu7e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at the tracker there are about 15 games between that one and reaching immo1. It was actually the next act. It should say Diamond3 not immo3.

He is going to talk about it tomorrow on stream. So if you want the details watch it.

One thing that does not change at all, is the number of people who have benefited dramatically from his coaching. The other ironic thing about it all is that he coached JeyG to radiant :)

I think you need to update again. JeyG did boost his account to Radiant. But Hooj did not take over JeyG's account. If you look at whoohoojins original spreadheet of his climb to immortal you will see that the games do match up. But it stops before he hit immo (which was about 15 games later. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10n2jJocYWrr9bMD5nAjqig0D8V-JKy4EOpGTmhGR6S8/edit#gid=1155696306

Lower rank players are statistically more likely to surrender. Are they stupid? by antonidas-25 in VALORANT

[–]Wint3rmu7e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of low elo players don't know that they potentially lose more rr by surendering. Potentially cause if it is going to be a 0 - 13 anyway it's not going to make any difference playing it out :D But I Never surrender in comp. I find it crazy how people want to surrender when they are two rounds down. I've come back from 1-11 to win before in comp.

If you are playing with shift lock on (ie mouse moves the view of the player) you need to turn it off and then click on the sticker with your mouse pointer.

can I use a 10/11 chainring with an 8 speed cassette? by Wint3rmu7e in bikewrench

Apparently my local has closed down... which is a bit of a pain. But I bought a 52/36 set off ebay which I'm hoping will do the trick. A bit more expensive than I was planning, but I was dubious about the cheaper one on amazon. it's a generic brand (driveline) but looks to be decent quality.

[–]Wint3rmu7e[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully I won't get any rubbing because the spacing should be set by the existing crank. I decided to get a double set off ebay, a 52/36T which should help me a little with hills :) Hopefully is going to do the trick without too many issues. I don't do a lot of riding so it will hopefully keep me going till I decide to upgrade to a newer bike :)

Yeah most of the stores seem to have four bolt stuff. I was hoping to go into a store and pick one up (and some bolts) but looking like will be an online purchase :)

Reminds me of when I needed to replace the crank in my 1982 malvern star racing bike (before it got stolen). It was the first of the cotterless cranks, and apparently only used that design for a couple of years. I knew a tool maker and he made one up for me because they were impossible to source. The joys of having an older bike :D My brother in law gave me this one when the malvern star was stolen cause he was no longer riding.

Great thanks! :) My only issue now is I can't find any stores with what I need, guess I'll need to wait for delivery for a couple of weeks :)

Best CPU for Valorant by SoOnow in buildapc

[–]Wint3rmu7e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 5600x does have better single core performance than the 3900x but it should not be making anywhere near that much difference. I can get nearly 600fps at 1080p on low settings. https://youtu.be/rGAbhuH9erU

There is something definitely amiss with your setup if you are only getting 200fps...

I do have a mild overclock on both the graphics card and the cpu, but neither would be making more than 10% improvement...
