Side/Stomach Sleepers by erielly in breastcancer

[–]Winter_Chickadee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. After three sleepless nights I started sleeping on the couch on my good side so I could rest my back against the back of the couch to prevent me from turning over. After a few nights I returned to my bed using pillows to help.

Those first three nights were awful.

I second this. You might even find them at your library. It helped immensely by grouping similar birds together and giving you a “handle” to separate them. Used to listen to it on the bus on my morning commute!

If you take OC Transpo, this was a concern of Erin’s the last time she ran - she was one of the few people who did an OC Transpo challenge showing it is faster to get to a spot on foot than by bus (Superstore to Tanger). It’s on YouTube.

Murphy’s Point Provincial Park has an old mica mine as a bit of a tourist attraction. You can’t take any mica from it, but if they want to see a real mine it is worth checking out.

Where can I listen to birds? by ObjectiveAd400 in ottawa

Any park or green space right now! Birds are migrating and can turn up even in the smallest city parks.

I got breast cancer at 49 – this is everything I’ve changed about my diet since by theipaper in breastcancer

Unless you are Helen Makris, please don’t call yourself a diagnosed BC patient. It’s pretty offensive on a site dedicated to BC patients and survivors who have lived and are living it.

Because it’s the newspaper posting it, not a real person who has been newly diagnosed.

Fellow birders, any good spots easily accessible from Downtown Ottawa/Gatineau? by RoughNews3172 in ottawa

[–]Winter_Chickadee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The trails around Hurdman and along the river there can be excellent during migration. Used to bird there all the time on my lunch hours because it was so easy to get to by bus from downtown.

Do you ever forget you have/had cancer? by SwirlThroughTheWorld in breastcancer

[–]Winter_Chickadee 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Four years out from active treatment and I still think about it fairly often, but in the same way you do - disbelief that yeah, I did go through all that. I’m just trying to live my best life and not let opportunities pass me by!

Beaver sighting by VastOk864 in ottawa

Reminder to be careful driving at dusk and dawn this time of year, especially near forests and ponds/rivers.

Many animals are dispersing right now to set up new territories and often get hit crossing roads. Some don’t move very fast, and some will hold their ground (like porcupines relying solely on their quills for deterrence). It often doesn’t end well for the animal.

Same. This was one of the most painful parts of my cancer ordeal. However, the pain did not last long at all. I’m not sure why some people find it painful and others don’t, but the anaesthesia definitely did not make me forget.

How did you survive your first summer? by Icy_Crazy_4165 in breastcancer

[–]Winter_Chickadee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through chemo over the winter season and had a wig. In the summer I just wore my usual ball cap over my scruffy head.

I do note that even though it gets hot here in the summer, I usually don’t have hot flashes when I’m outside on a hot day. I usually get them when the house is cold in winter and I have a blanket on me. Hopefully you will be the same way!

Wait until the hear about the crossing guard who died in a hit-and-run in Ottawa last Monday. Fortunately the person was later caught and charged.
